Anyone play Descend RPG? Looks similar to Legend of Grimlock, and the few iTunes reviews seem mostly positive. Anyway, it's FREE! (As of Sunday night, April 15th... :ninja: )

I wonder when Legend of Grimrock is coming to iOS? That might actually be better on an iPad now that I think of it.

Hmm, I was trying to decide whether I should uninstall or not (for space reasons (damn you Apple!)) since I finally just finished both bonus maps. I wish there was some way...ooh, wait a minute, just remembered that Appshopper alerts you to updates as well as price drops/increases. NM.

Thanks again for that suggestion. By far the most gaming time I have spent on any iPad game title to date.

Balance was PERFECT.

The devs say that they're going to port it over.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the iOS port rather than playing on PC. Got too many RPG's I'm working on right now anyways.

Downloaded it, played for 5 minutes and deleted it. It might get better, but the start is mind-numbing.

The Sorcerer #1-5 games look like straight clones of the classic early Wizardry titles. Has anyone played those? I'm planning to finally get a tablet soon, and that alone may sway me to the iPad if they are playable.

Gratuitous Space Battles has been ported over by the developer. There's a few complaints that it needs a little work on the UI and that it can be a bit buggy, so I'm holding off for now. But I'll definitely get it sooner rather than later.

I will try it out for nostalgia only (I doubt I will go far), especially since some of them are free. Too much competition right now between the Bard's Tales and Legend of Grimrock!

I bought Carcassonne on my Apple account. It's universal. If my GF logs into my account with her iphone, can she download the app, then sign back into hers and play it? More importantly, can we then play each other via the interwebz?

I've been playing Crime City Hd on my iPad, and for a freemium game I'm pretty hooked. You can pay money to get different buildings and to reset timers, but so far I'm enjoying myself with no money laid out.

All righty then:

1. If I were you, I would not base a decision to buy or not buy a tablet on this version of what appears to be an almost exact replica of Wizardry.
2. This game is not only not made for tablets (at least not in iOS land), but it's not even universal (meaning that in order to play it on the iPad at a size any larger than an iPhone's screen, you will need to artificially double the size (uglifying the pixels). Not a big deal for this particular title, but just note that there will be lots of jaggies in the text even.
3. Note that this was created by a Japanese (I think?) fan, so you will see tons of misspellings (Hobit for Hobbit for instance) Doesn't particularly bother me, but gets some really riled up.
4. I can't comment on similarity (or not) to the mazes from the original, as the last time I played that was c. 1986 or 1987, but might as well have been 1287 for all my memory is worth. I would bet even the mazes are the same, as this appears to be an exact copy, with only some of the names changed to protect the guilty (Wizardry to Sorcerer, Proving Grounds of Mad Overlord to....Proving Grounds of Crazy Overlord (or something similar).

I spent way more time than I should have, having fun "rolling" characters, trying to get a ninja (didn't happen). It looks like they made some slight tweaks graphically, to the monsters (this depends on what format you played on I guess...for me it was an Apple IIe) and they do have a link to an online manual, but one thing that kind of drove me crazy was the lack of quick switching of the app, i.e. you are going through the dungeons, you click the iPhone home button to check your email, and come back to the Sorcerer app, which is now on the main screen (i.e you just lost all your progress).

I also died a horrible, swift death at the hands of some kobolds I think, only to find no way to be able to restore the party, which is perhaps the way the original worked, I don't recall. Anyhoo...I will definitely be sticking with Bard's Tale II for my old school RPG fare, as it's not nearly as rough around the edges as this title, and I just don't have the patience for both.

More of a trip down memory lane for me, as opposed to something that is awesomely fun while not mind numbingly maddening due to archaic UI design (or lack thereof) (for that, I can fill a similar need with Legends of Grimrock). Of course, playing Wizardy in my school's computer lab in 7th grade WAS awesomely fun...at the time...but it really does not translate well to 2012 of course, except for the most nostalgic hard core players.

Cool, thanks for testing out the Wiz clones. I never played the classic Bard's Tales, so that's another plus. Are any other series available, like Might and Magic? Wizardry was the only one I played until I got to the Gold Box games.

Also swaying me is that my cable provider has an app for streaming some TV to a tablet, but it's only available for iOS.

Streaming tv to my IPad is my #1 fav. feature. Wife wants to watch some horrible show on the main tv and I want to watch sports? Bust out the ipad and everyone is happy. Also the app lets you use it as a remote for the tv boxes. Don't even need to be in the same room. When I'm feeling like messing with people I'll randomly change the channels on the tvs from other rooms.

Just noticed that they released new content for Kingdom Rush (which is for me, undoubtedly The Best iPad game I have played so far), and a new option to use "heroes" instead of bonus points. Very well implemented, but in reality, (and I tried all three of the free heroes), sacrificing those 15 bonus points was not worth it (i.e. the hero was not as strong as having all those tower boosts IMO) Maybe the hero option is better used if you are doing the challenges that are level limited.

So I am playing it AGAIN, because dumb ol' me uninstalled it after I finished it, and lost all my bonus points. Apparently they added one or two new maps as well as the hero function.

Oooh. 7th Guest should be some great, nostalgic fun! Thanks. I vaguely recall that it was a landmark game for some technological reason which prompted me to get it when it came out, but not sure I ever finished it.

Yeah, I remember the perma death from the original wizardry - we kept hard powering down the computer so we wouldn't lose our characters to the perma death. We'd even go into battle with one hand one the power switch to the computer... Ah, good times (that I don't think I ever want to relive ;)

We would lunge for the little locking lever on the 5.25 drive to stop the game from writing our party wipes to disk. Then you just use the R)ecover lost characters option on the Wizardry Master Boot Disk, and you were back in the Castle, safe and sound with no memory of the last fateful trip into the Proving Grounds.

Wow, lots of highly rated titles dropped in price today for some reason:

Fieldrunners (iPad only): ($5.99)
Samurai II: Vengenace (universal) (.99)
Avadon: Black Fortress HD (iPad only) ($4.99) - this seems to be a pretty regular price drop every few months
Wooords (.99) For those of you (like me) completely turned off by the revisions/destruction of the best word game in iOS-Land, W.E.L.D.E.R.

Picked up Woords, and will likely grab Samurai II at least, possibly Fieldrunners, because I am sucker for TD games.

Edit: I see why Fieldrunners is on sale (never seen it on sale before) - Fieldrunners 2 is about to drop any day

Also, anyone interested in platformers needs to check out Swordigo ASAP. It was free a couple of weeks ago, but by the time I played it and realized the quality (enough to be mentioned in this thread), it had already gone up in price (currently $1.99)

Very slick production values, and easy fun. RPG lite elements in terms of levelling up a few abilities: magic, might, health, and one other I think.

Picked up both Broken Sword titles for iPad this weekend ($0.99 sale)...enjoying the hell out of the first one (Smoking Mirror remastered) so far. It is REALLY well done in terms of substituting touch interface vs mouse. Also, I can't remember playing the original, though I know I played all the Broken Sword titles on PC except for the last one. WTH?

Have you finished it? Just curious how long it runs on average. 6-8 hours or so maybe?

I'm 70% through, according to the game, but it doesn't log total hours, so I'm not sure how long it's taken me to get here. I'd say your 6-8 hours is probably not too far off. Then again, I've been taking it pretty leisurely, so that may be skewed.

Without a doubt, though, a whole lot of game play for 1.99!

I've been playing Finger Shot RPG quite a bit. Simple and fun, and reminds me of a game we used to play as kids with flicking a pencil... sorta, across a piece of paper. So far I have not even been tempted to want to make any in-game purchases, not needed at all. It's a bit on the easy side, but a nice mindless break time game.

In short, you fling (angry birds style) different classed characters at the enemy across a map. There are archers, magic types, and melee. You either take down the enemy's HP's or knock them into a hazard. There is a very simple leveling system to strengthen your most used classes. (or all I suppose)

There is multi-player but I have not tried that yet.

NimbleBit (Pocket Frogs, TinyTower) has released Pocket Planes for iOS.

There goes my productivity for the month.

I tried tiny tower. I don't understand the appeal. Feels just like one of the Zynga Hurry Up and Wait-ville games with pixel graphics. What am I missing?
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

That's exactly what it is. The appeal is the same as it is for Zynga games.

I'm thinking I might've put this here, instead of a new thread. Apologies, I'm a n00b...

Not having played one of these type of games before, I'm not sure I see the appeal either. Seems awfully dull to me.

Pocket Planes includes a fair amount of strategic decisions on how to move the cargo and passengers, where to expand your coverage, which planes to buy, which airports to upgrade, etc., etc. Even though you have to wait for your planes to get to their locations before you can do some of things possible, the wait is extremely short in the first half of the game. It's when you get up to inter/intra-continental travel that the wait times increase and you won't have that for a while. It's not for everyone, but there's more to it than simply pressing a couple of buttons and moving on.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

It's also perfect for 2 minute play sessions every 30 minutes or so - say, while at work. :ninja:
