Destiny - Bungies next gen mmo

Post by Daehawk »

Since no one seems to have a thread dedicated to Destiny I figured to start one and go from there. Since it's coming to consoles both current and next gen first I thought I'd put it in the console forum. im pretty sure it will hit PC one day...just no idea when.

So whats everyone's thought on Destiny? To me its the only MMO Im looking forward to. And of all the next gen titles it's at the top of my want / must have list. The other two being Titanfall and The Division.

As for Destiny I plan to play each of the classes and races so my thoughts for characters are as follows.....and keep in mind this is based on what little info there is right now.

Exo - Hunter - (gender unknown with Exo) - sniper rifle / pistol
Human - Titan - Female - machine guns / rocket launchers
Awoken - Warlock - Male - shotgun / magic

To me the Exo look to be the most interesting of the three races. And for classes I'm ALWAYS a ranged type to start with so a Hunter fits me well. As a Hunter my plan for weapons are to use a pistol for close in and go full on sniper for ranged. I figure my Titan will be some type of assault gun and perhaps a bladed wep for close in wet work. As for Warlock Im not entirely sure what they bring to the table other than magic. So Im guessing Ill be magic mixed with I hope a shotgun.

To the starships we will have I am guessing they will be fully upgradable and be able to have all kinds of personal looks to them. So I cant even imagine what my ship will be like.

I forgot factions. I have no clue what a faction brings you in the game...perhaps missions, clothing, weapons...who knows..perhaps all and more.

Factions are as follows with symbols....

Dead Orbit....the faction Im most interested in at this time.
Image

Seven Seraphs
Image

New Monarchy
Image

FWC
Image

Osiris
Image

And there's another faction that may or may not be a real faction in the game. There is no official info on it but it has been spotted within pics of the game on stuff. It is FOTC.
EDIT: It stands for Forces of the City which is believed to be the overall group that all Guardians belong to.

So any thoughts on The Traveler? Why did it come here? Why choose the place it is? Did it actually come to help as we think? What is it? Is all this info located somewhere on Earth? Is there a way into The Traveler?

Classes and races. As of right now there are 3 races and 3 classes which I'll assume would be added to later.

Races:
Humans - The standard. Bright and military like.
Exo - Sinister and powerful...sorta undead / machine like.
Awoken - Elven and vampire like.

Classes:
Titan - Soldier / knight like. Known by their armors....80% armor 20% cloth
Hunter - Ranged . They can be noticed by their hoods. 50% armor 50% cloth
Warlock - Magic guys. Their look is trench coat based. 20% armor 80% cloth.

Small tid bit on the enemies you'll face.

Cabal
Large, as in very large
Rhino-like (as described by Bungie)

Fallen
The Fallen is an enemy faction which can apparently use both weapons and vehicles. There are three confirmed types of Fallen:
1:
Fallen Dreg: They are so far the only known Fallen with two arms. They are thieves and can be heard before being seen, due to the clattering of their bounty. They are crafty and known to hiss. They carry a pistol and shock dagger.
2:
Fallen Vandal: They seem to be a higher ranking than the Dreg and are outfitted with better weaponry. They tend to use long range weapons that take time to charge.
3:
Fallen Captain: A pack of Fallen is led by a Captain. These Fallen are extemely fierce - do not underestimate them.

Hive
The Hive are a strange, zombie like enemy. They are ordered and/or controlled by a Hive Leader through some sort of magic. The Hive are dangerous up close and even more so the longer you let the Leader live.

Vex
Bungie has withheld information about the Vex. The most that is known is that the Vex are robotic time travelers.
Yellow color
Large heads
Can wield firearms

And a bonus possible unknown enemy....

Onyx Pyramids (Glimmer?)
Little is known about these onyx pyramids other than that they are powerful.
It is speculated that they can control other enemies using a green, mystical aura, as seen in the picture below.

The mysterious Traveler is a total unknown as I mentioned in my first post. What is it? Why is it here? Is it really what we think it is?

The Traveler is a mysterious spherical object/force that hovers over Earth. It's origins are unknown, but after it arrived, Earth's golden age of space exploration began. The Traveller later sacrificed itself to stop an extraterrestrial threat that attempted to wipe the entire human race from existence.

The Traveler now hovers above The Last City, humanity's last remaining metropolis, and its presence grants the "Guardians of the City"—the last defenders of the human race—the ability to wield an unknown power.

It has been with us for ceturies before the Collapse and was the driving for of the Golden Age. Even after all this time, so little is known about it.

And our Last City

The Last City on Earth
The Last City on Earth is very much like it sounds, the last city where Humans live on Earth. Not much else is known about The Last City on Earth.

The Last City on Earth contains the home of the Guardians: the Tower. The Tower is the location where players can meet up with other players, plan strategies, and launch off world with private ships.

Not getting any feedback in this thread so maybe it's time to post links to the videos so you can get interested in this amazing game that will be here soon.

But first a little blurb on the universe of Destiny:

Destiny is set seven hundred years into the future in a post-apocalyptic setting. In a universe where humans had spread out and colonised planets in the Solar System, an event known as "the Collapse" saw the mysterious dissolution of these colonies and left mankind teetering on the brink of extinction. The only known survivors of the Collapse are those living on Earth, who were saved by "the Traveler", a white, spherical celestial body whose appearance centuries before had enabled humans to reach the stars. The Traveler now hovers above the last remaining human city, and its presence allows the "Guardians of the City"—the last defenders of the human race—the ability to wield an unknown power.

Upon mankind's first attempt to repopulate and reconstruct after the Collapse, it is discovered that hostile alien races have occupied mankind's former colonies and civilizations. The player takes on the role of a Guardian of the City, and is tasked with investigating and destroying these threats before humanity is completely wiped out by them.

Heh. I think it's just a given. I will get into this game bigtime, most likely on PC, let's hope there's cross play.

I am always in for any co-op gaming.

I wouldn't count on PC / Console cross play at all. Never has been that worked. I might even go so far as to say no cross with Xbox and PS.

New video link....Bungie panel at GDC 2013 . It's an hour long video of the Bungie guys letting you in on their thought processes with pics and such to go along with it. Informative to see the process of game creation.

Turns out Glimmer is not part of the Onyx Pyramid race but the form of currency in the game. Glimmer is supposed to be little blue cubes that is used as money.

I'm very interested I just don't have much to add at this point. I haven't had much time to look into it other than I love Bungie games so I already was sold before even knowing much more about this. I've enjoyed reading the things you have posted though so for that I thank you! I just don't have anything to add at this point other than a string of +1 posts :)

Glad some are enjoying the info Im posting. Ill keep it up then :)

A little more behind the scenes info. In this video the first part shows info on The Traveler. Much more than has ever been shown before yet really not much at all. It seems it may have been a terraformer for the Humans. It then stayed with us and protected us when whatever hit us hit us. It had been here a long time by then.(EDIT: Wanted to ad it seems to be a terraformer that helps the Humans but is not their's...it is totally alien from outside our system)

Traveler

And a bit of info on 'space magic!' hehe...the powers that each class gets. A small look..

Space magic

This next video shows some of the guns that appear in game with their names. It also has a longer look at The Traveler video but this time with sound. It almost appears to me to be the intro to the game.

First I've heard of it. Probably because I'm strictly PC.

Should they announce a PC version, then I'll probably pay a bit more attention.

But thanks for the info.

They haven't released a PC game since 2001 (Oni) -- the same year HALO came out on the Xbox. At this point, they've been making console games longer than PC. I'm pretty sure they're going to survive.

I'm not that mad that they aren't releases a PC version except initially it was announced they were. That's what irritated me. It got my hopes up to dash them.

And even before then, they were a Mac developer. I got the impression early on though, I don't know from where, that this would return them to the PC, so I'm slightly disappointed that it's not going to be.

Gamespot reported that Activision released a bunch of info today about the Destiny beta (starting 7/17 for PS and 7/23 for XBOX). There's some good information in the article, but I was reading through the part about the different collector's editions, and I saw this:
Destiny Ghost Edition ($150):

Everything from the Destiny Limited Edition
Ghost replica, featuring motion-activated lights and voice recordings from award-winning actor Peter Dinklage, voice of the Ghost character, the player’s personal companion in the game.
. . . wait. What? Peter Dinklage is voice acting the player's sidekick in Destiny? How is it possible I didn't know this?

This moves Destiny from a priority purchase to the rare game that I'm actually going to pre-order.

Really? It was big news a few weeks ago when his voicework was released to Youtube -- which ultimately spawned a T-Shirt that was sold by Bungie for charity.

They did come back and say it will have at least two more QA passes before the game is released, but it just seems pretty strange a video like that was released at all. Because really - where's the blame? The company directing him or the voice actor? I can't say.

It is also possible they intend to remaster it with a digital effect - something more machine-like. They may have told him to make it a bit flat to fit. I can only imagine how odd the GLaDOS voicework must have been before the processing.

Well, GLaDOS sounds a lot like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVgXSB4_sTU

I think you might have it right. To modulate the voice, you likely have to be a bit more monotone.

Seems odd to me, though. Why would you pay to have a voice as recognizable as Dinklage's and then hide it behind a bunch of effects?

Also, upon listening to the video, I agree that it was oddly flat.

He only speaks a few times, but this video showcasing the Ghost Edition has him speaking with the voice modulation. It sounds much better and not as much like a bored Dinklage calling you on the phone. Listen particularly at 2:16 in the video.

Scoop its open for the 360 and ps3 now. You need a gold live account to play on the 360. I tried it for a bit today. It is pretty good so far. Its Halo like with some light RPG features. The beat runs through the 26th and theres a special event tomorrow at 3 Pacific time or there abouts.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?
