Game play video
Set in the beautiful, volcanic scarred high-desert of the Pacific Northwest, Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game where you play as Deacon St. John, a Drifter and bounty hunter who would rather risk the dangers of the broken road than live in one of the “safe” wilderness encampments. The game takes place two years after a global pandemic has killed almost everyone, but transformed millions of others into what survivors call Freakers – mindless, feral creatures, more animal than human but very much alive and quickly evolving. In the demo you saw two types of Freaks – Newts, which were adolescents when infected, are opportunistic hunters, preferring to hit and run from the shadows; and a Horde. Made up of hundreds of individual Freakers, Hordes eat, move and attack together, almost as one. Some Hordes roam the highways at night, while others, like the one in the demo, have found a food source that keeps it in a single location. Skills learned in his prior life as an outlaw biker have given Deacon a slight edge in the seemingly never-ending fight to stay alive. But will it be enough?

People say it reminds them of The Last of Us....which I still need to play.

I'm keeping one eye on this but unless one can fix the issue that the main character is wearing his baseball cap backwards, it's a "no buy" for me ... :)

Inverse hat control really should be required in this day and age.

Review embargo has been lifted and starting to read the reviews ...

https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/04/25 ... one-review

"Days Gone feels bloated, like a movie that goes on for an hour longer than it needs to or should’ve. It’s messy and confused, but peppered with genuinely thrilling encounters with rampaging hordes of zombies and occasionally breathless firefights. There’s a good game in here somewhere, but it’s buried in a meandering storyline, repetitive missions, and just too much obligatory stuff to do without an eye on the smaller details that could have given it much more character. Some fine tuning and editing could have removed the tedium and celebrated what makes this game unique and interesting, but Days Gone rides strictly down the middle of the dusty road and never finds its rhythm."

https://www.denofgeek.com/us/games/days ... PS4-review

"In this timeline, though, Days Gone is a high-profile PS4 exclusive that has been in development for over four years and cost millions of dollars. At a time when we should all be talking about the unsustainable escalation of the games industry and how the path we’re on is contributing to burnout and studio closures, it’s hard not to look at Days Gone as consumer-facing proof that it’s time for a change if for no other reason than the fact that the formula is no longer worth what it costs."

https://www.gameinformer.com/review/day ... ided-world

"Days Gone has good gameplay foundations. The scarcity of supplies and ever-present threat of zombies put me on edge as much as it gave me options to escape by the skin of my teeth. But the inability to fully deliver on either the story or open world fronts makes it a title of both possibilities and limitations."

"I did a lot of things in Days Gone. I burned every single Freaker nest; I cleared every ambush camp; I maxed out my bike; I took out a few optional hordes just because. Like Deacon with Sarah, I kept going because I hoped to find something, to follow a thread to a possibly fascinating or satisfying or impactful conclusion. But at the end of it all, I'd only gotten scraps."

Well I guess it's at least nice to get confirmation that review embargoes are always bad omens?

The first one I read was over at Gaming Trend: Running on fumes. Pretty much more of the same. Too bad.

So, I've been playing this, and I enjoy it, except for some of the stupid Biker culture stuff.

The gunplay feels good, the bike controls feel good. The melee is a bit wonky, but not too bad. The character does move way too slowly. But I am having fun with it. I love zombie games, I love open world games, so I am enjoying myself. I kinda think 60 bucks is a bit expensive, but it is a pretty lengthy game. I still haven't had a couple of portions of the map opened up to me yet, after at least 30 hours.

But one thing I am having a problem with, is finding those blue question mark things. They always disappear as quickly as they pop up. What am I doing wrong to find them??? Anybody out there playing this too and knows what I am doing wrong????????

While most of the reviews I have seen are ranking this basically from pretty bad to ok, the GWJ and Qt3 podcasts actually are more positive on the general gameplay. It seems that universally everyone seems to hate the characters and writing, though.

And, there doesn't seem to be the important "inverse hat control", forcing you to play a douchy wanna-be biker with his baseball cap backward. I'll wait for a serious discount for this one

Finally finished this game. God, what a slog of a game! Soooooo long, way longer than it needed to. Game could have been 1/3 the size and I'd still leave satisfied. Didn't help it that the story doesn't carry the game. At least the base gameplay was still fun, killing zombies, hordes, and clearing enemy camps.

Amazon had this for $20 and I am lacking something to play over the break (where I will be off for 18 out of 19 days). Hope it doesn't suck too much!
