[ios]Simcity Buildit

Post by D.A.Lewis »

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, its a money grab but I like it. I have been playing it almost to the exclusion of all my other games. I even like the bad SimCity games so of course I was a sucker for the "FREE" mobile app. The game actually makes no bones about being a money grab and yet it is entirely possible to successfully play the game without paying a dime.

Two days ago I finished in the money in the contest of mayors and won some game cash. OTOH, I had to spend some game cash to come out on top but I still ended up ahead.

For those who are not familiar with the game, its basically a simplified version of the regular SimCity game but you are given a mostly unalterable game map that is divided into sections. Maybe around 200 or so. You are given about 20 of them for free. You have to earn the rest in order to build on additional land. But you can get a nice little town going in the starter tiles. The challenge comes in coming up with a creative solution to the same land mass all they other players get. One of the highlights in the game design is that you can visit the cities of other players and buy stuff from them. It's not a person to person visit but you do get to see what other players (mayors as called by EA) are doing with their building design.

Earning the set pieces to gain additional land takes patience. And if you a city builder fan this game will test you like no other because you absolutely have to slow down. Playing without any patience will eventually cost you real world money because it is so easy to push that button to open the game store to buy some game cash and get what you want now, now, now. And to be perfectly honest I have probably put in about 25 bucks into this "FREE" game over the past 3 months. Still, that 25 bucks would have went to a couple of bundles over that time any way, so I'm fooling my mind into thinking everything is still on an even keel.

In any event after this last exhausting Contest of Mayors, (they last 5 days) I kinda want to get back to my RPGS and HOGs. I like the game but I will now transition into a truly casual player.

Although, the next contest of mayors starts at 11:00pm in just about 9 hours . . .. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

So . . . I'm still playing . . .

Of the 200 or so land mass tiles to get in the game, I only need 11 more. I'm easily placing in the money for most of the Contest of Mayors, and I have two feeder cities. I'm still hungering for my RPGs but I know of no "new" sandbox open world RPGs so I am still stuck in the casual mobile game world. Of note, while I am absolutely flushed with game cash, it's simply not enough to buy an end game. I went online about 2 months ago searching for the unlimited cash exploit, but all it did was open my computer to a whole new slew of friends . It's good I have been mostly on my IPAD for the past few months because there is really nothing on my computer now.

A year later and still playing this game.

My city is almost finished. Just one more section of mountain terrain to secure and that's it. I have secured all the beach and regular land masses. And I also have over 1 million in population, but I have not exhausted all the unused land to build homes.

The developers continue to add stuff to the game and about 3 months ago they added the ability for clubs to go to war against one another. It's created some controversy in the SimCity Universe because a lot of players feel that war simply is not appropriate in the Sim City World. The wars are voluntary, they only last 3 days, and all city damage is repaired for free at the end of the war. It is a fun way to get resources to build your city but your club has to really be communicative in order to do well in battle.

I probably have not played a game for this long since the olden days of PC gaming when there was no Internet and the only game hints came from waiting for some magazine (Computer GAming World) to assist you (Thanks Scorpia). Right now, I am wondering, am I gaming or am I putting the finishing touches on my city art. A building here or a park there? Should I add a river or a canal? And who gets a church and who gets an historical landmark? Is putting a string of casino's in a neighborhood really a good thing or a good design?

In any event, I was heavy into Elex (over 200 hours) but cant make a decision on what dreadful faction to join. I hate them all. I'm delusionally hoping the developers create a patch to allow you to join one of the 2 kinda independent factions. I said delusional right? So while I wait for magic to come down the pike . . . SimCity Buildit . . . for the time sink.
