I can never tell why I like certain types of music and not others. Sometimes it's the lyrics, sometimes it's the melody, sometimes it just something intangible where the song just grabs me. I'm a fan of classic rock and hard rock/heavy metal (pre-1990s) - people that don't like it say that it all sounds like noise and you can't even make out most of the words. But I can't make out words in rap or hip/hop songs, to me *those* sound like noise. My husband makes fun of me listening to Russian pop music (their most mainstream stuff) - but it's the style of music that I grew up with, I don't necessarily like all of it but I can listen to their top 40 radio all day long...I can't stand Billboard top 40.

As far as art goes, my interest mostly wanes with mid- to late Impressionism. Art History was one of my favorite subjects, but modern art is not my cup of tea.

While we can all agree that taste in art varies from person to person, I think it's really important that we can all agree that we should shit all over art we don't like.

That's me, which is weird because I run very hot and cold when it comes to empathy. I have a very strong sense of empathy, especially when it come to the visceral. But when it comes to social stuff. I got nuthin'. I know what floats my boat but other people. Nope.

I'm not musical at all but music is the easiest way to my emotions, especially with a passionate lyricist/singer. At the same, time Hendrix gives me headache, Dylan bores me to tears, and country radio sound like Eagles and I really really really don't like (the) Eagles.

Making bunch of dots in to a picture is the whip. I can watch anyone with awe who sees a graphic in their head and know how to put in nonsensical layer upon layer until the graphic becomes something. I like to listen to and read people who describe narrative of poetry and painting and song and sculpture.

But then if it's something ILB thinks is right, we all know it must piss or puss.

I love music and have to listen to it (and try to make it) on a regular basis, but I also really really really don't like the Eagles.

I admire art that I couldn't do or wouldn't have thought of, and that skull-ish painting is something I wouldn't have thought of and yep, still probably couldn't do.

Heh, before Grund's post, this (or a painting just like it) was hanging at Detroit Institute of Arts years ago and it is the exact think I always think of first when I think of shit I don't get. In life, the painting I am thinking of is the size of pingpong table and that's all I could see when it look at it. To each their own but my own ignorance of the desire to understand or possess that makes me feel like there is sucker born every minute.

The Internet tells me the painting I am trying to remember is this:

https://www.wikiart.org/en/barnett-newman/be-i-1970

OtOH, I could see either work calling attention to itself in a very sterile environment. Millions of dollars in attention? Not really but attention just the same, sort of how a collection of individual uniquely flawed glasses at a dinner call attention to themselves. They make you think about something. You don't really know what, but something.

One of the art professors here covers all of his paintings in plastic wrap. That's his thing. Some of them look pretty good in person. His website is not very good and the images are low quality. Though they aren't my thing I do like some of them but they lose a large amount of impact when transferred to a computer screen. Many of the paintings are quite large (3' x 5') and seeing them in person is vastly different than looking at them on a monitor. I don't get the Basquait (I also don't get Pisasso - I mean, seriously, WTF) but I'm sure this Basquait painting has a much different impact in person than on a computer screen. It might not take something you don't like and make you like it but I think it's hard to judge something made to look at in person that may be very large on a small part of a small screen.

Here is a good example of the plastic wrap painting.
