First Spartan class kicked my ass, but it was fun. It helped that I had some people I knew, and that the trainers are super nice. While they didn't coddle the newbies, they were always encouraging even when we lagging at the back of the pack. It was easily the most strenuous workout I've ever done, and this was considered a rather "light" day.

However, you're guaranteed not to get bored. The constant shake-up of stuff to do was what I liked most about it, and at times it felt less like a workout and more like playing on an obstacle course.

To give you some idea, here was today's workout:

Warmup:
1 lap around building
20 jumping jacks
20 squats

Circuit 1 (x2)
Hurdles
Box Climb
Army crawl
Fence crawl (climb around perimeter of fence without touching ground - required crazy grip strength)
20 pound medicine ball carry
Sandbag flips x5

Circuit 2 (x2)
200 meters rowing machine
Spool climb (get up on one of those big fiber optic cable spools and back down)
Traverse short rock wall
Kettle bell pull (pull 20 pound kettle bells to the height of the wall)
60 pound medicine ball carry

Circuit 3 (x2)
Lunges
20 hand-release push ups
Leap frogs
Sit ups
Crab crawl
5 burpees
1 lap around the building

Circuit 4 (x1)

Kettle bell carry (one each hand) - full circuit of parking lot
5 burpees
Bucket carry (kettle bell in a bucket) - full circuit of parking lot
5 burpees
Viper carry (bit heavy pipe thing on one shoulder) - full circuit of parking lot
5 burpees

Repeat x1

Circuit 5 (x2)

50 calories on any gym machine
10 pull-ups (or 30 second hang if like me, you can't do pull ups)
Rope climb (or if you can't climb a rope, like me, rope pull)

If you'd told me before today I could get through even 50% of that, I'd say you were being extremely generous. The peer pressure and trainer encouragement makes all the difference. I can't wait to see the changes after a year of it.

Weather is deteriorating and my workload is picking up, making exercise difficult to get. Editing involves sitting on my ass for long stretches, whereas Curio City required more activity, so I'm getting considerably less routine exercise too.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or a fitness expert, nor am I suggesting anyone try extended fasting. I am just documenting what I have done on my weight loss journey.

I completed my first extended fast on Wednesday night 1/16 at 6pm. I was one hour shy of a full six days putting me at a total of 143 hours. During that time I drank salty water (aka snake juice) with the occasional cup of green tea. When hunger crept in I drank 2 tablespoons of raw organic apple cider vinegar mixed with 12-16 ounces of water and that worked wonders. The hardest part came between the 48-64 hour period. On days four and five I was amazed that I wasn't hungry at all.

My lowest weight was 219.2 on the morning of Friday the 18th. After reading several blog posts about refeeding syndrome and refeeding edema I decided to ease back very slowly into eating food. Wednesday night was a small cup of Curried Cauliflower and Kale soup. Thursday night was a larger bowl of the soup with half of an avocado. On Friday I had a bowl of soup for lunch and a homemade bacon and egg burrito for dinner.

I also had a major episode of afib on Saturday the 19th that was so severe (130+ pulse and difficulty breathing) that I went to urgent care/ER. I'm not sure if it was stress induced as I had a lot of personal and work-related events happen the days leading up that. It might have been the process of converting from being in ketosis back into a normal metabolism. At any rate, it was so scary that I'm probably not doing an extended fast like that again. I will continue with IF and OMAD as I had done that for a few months without issue.

Like I mentioned before, the lowest weight I have been in the past 5-7 years was 218 but that was difficult to maintain. I'll see if the combination of IF and OMAD will let me move past that barrier. I weighed 210lbs in high school and I would love to be able to get to that weight before I turn 50 in June of this year. If my body won't support it that's fine, but I'm giving it a shot!

I finished my second Spartan class and this time we had some obstacles thrown in. An 8-foot wall, a rope climb, and uneven monkey bars. I have never done any of those things. If you had asked me if I had the upper body strength to do any of those things, I'd say you were insane.

The buddy of mine that got me into this class told me the best thing he got out of it was not the ability to run an obstacle course, or even better health. It was the realization that you can do things you didn't think you could do. That all clicked on Saturday.

There was one circuit where we had to carry this sandbag around the building and stop and do exercises at each corner. The other groups had already finished and I was just out there by myself, nobody around, carrying this stupid sandbag out in the middle of nowhere. And the realization hit me that going into this thing I had been comparing myself to other people - I'm the slowest one, the weakest one, the new guy, etc. When who I really should be comparing myself to is...myself.

A lightbulb went off there, and suddenly all that self-doubt kind of went away. I just started knocking it out because I wasn't trying to prove anything to these Spartan veterans. I was trying to prove something to my old self. My old self wouldn't even go to the class because those workouts were impossible. And he wouldn't climb a rope because he didn't have the strength. And he certainly wouldn't be carrying a sandbag for a block around the building.

There's so much to this that is mental, and everybody has to have their own way of getting over that block of "I can't do that." Well, yeah you can because there's people worse off than you that just did it.

I'll add a big +1 to that realization!

Back in 2011 when I started my midlife crisis by doing a half marathon and then bike "races" (I wasn't racing, just riding) and eventually sprint triathlons, I came to the realization that I was racing against myself and that I needed to check my ego at the starting line. During those races I was passed by 13 year old girls and 77 year old men. If I cared about all the people who "beat" me, I might have given up. But I kept focusing on beating my previous best and almost four years later ended up finishing an ironman triathlon. An ironman was never on my bucket list, but my confidence in my abilities kept growing so I went for it. There's a quote I read somewhere that said something to the effect of, "My goal today is to be able to kick the ass of yesterday's version of me".

3 days of bad nighttime eating (beer + meatballs + pizza Friday; beer + pork belly + steak frites Saturday; beer + wings + pizza for Super Bowl Sunday) did no favors to my number this week. However, I've somehow already dropped it all, as I was at 216.8 this morning.

I know there's a lot of day to day fluctuation on the scale, but sometimes there's something to be said about the actual volume of food consumed, in addition to calories, that makes the scale fluctuate on a daily basis.

I weigh myself daily, but did not get a chance to hop online and post my weekly results earlier, so here they are.

I decided to mix things up by eating more on Saturday and Sunday. My reasoning was I wanted to keep my body guessing plus I didn't want to limit myself during Superbowl weekend. Yeah, that's the ticket! Anyway, I shot up to 225.4 on Monday morning and am slowly working my way back down this week (I was 221.7 this morning).

Back to the land of OMAD.

I joined the low-carb train in the past year, going from 302 to 243 as of yesterday. Mainly moving to 2 meals a day, slashing sugar and fast food around 70%, and just eating cleaner overall. I really feel much better!

So I bought some sardines to try and replace red meat with a fish with some Omega three. After tasting those suckers, I'm thinking if I just eat a tiny bite of sardine whenever I'm hungry I'll for sure lose any and all appetite. Yuck!

Still creeping slowly in the wrong direction, mostly because now that I'm editing instead of running Curio City, the time that I used to spend moving around is spent planted in my seat. And because I'm working more hours and it's still winter, it's hard to make time/get motivated to walk. I only have 4 pairs of pants, and one of them moved to the "too small" pile today.

On the plus side, winter will end at about the same time that my biggest project does, so I should be able to get back to a better routine come April. It's a holding action (at best) until then.

I tried experimenting with changes in my eating window which quickly led to a little backsliding and overindulging on zebra popcorn.

Good story on why counting calories doesn't work for most people: Death of the calorie.
As a general rule it is true that if you eat vastly fewer calories than you burn, you’ll get slimmer (and if you consume far more, you’ll get fatter). But the myriad faddy diets flogged to us each year belie the simplicity of the formula that Camacho was given. The calorie as a scientific measurement is not in dispute. But calculating the exact calorific content of food is far harder than the confidently precise numbers displayed on food packets suggest. Two items of food with identical calorific values may be digested in very different ways. Each body processes calories differently. Even for a single individual, the time of day that you eat matters. The more we probe, the more we realise that tallying calories will do little to help us control our weight or even maintain a healthy diet: the beguiling simplicity of counting calories in and calories out is dangerously flawed.

This article mirrors my experience in my n=1 experiments. I've had a much better life balance since I quit counting. It was a waste of time. I was at one point weighing food to the gram and getting telemetry from Fitbit, etc. It all amounted to garbage data. Meaning I literally analyzed it and the correlation between the calories recorded, calories recorded expended, and weight was there but it was weak at best. Amount of protein recorded was far more predictive so I still record but mostly just to make sure I'm in the neighborhood on protein intake which is pretty high in my case.

When I'm not traveling I cook at home, eat whole foods, and feel much better generally. Unfortunately this year I've already managed to racked up ~40 days mostly outside the US. While there are less processed foods in Europe and India, I still can't cook for myself and high quality protein is pretty sparse in India. I cut out most alcohol to compensate and maintain but traveling is terrible on the body. Hotel gyms are pretty useless for power lifting. I have 2 week stints out of country and then I return to what amounts to a reset which is non-ideal but thems the breaks.

I generally trend this way and have good results when I go low-carb but it is hard to maintain day-to-day in certain situations. I do recommend it in stints though. When I go back to increasing consumption of complex carb foods I actually cheat up protein which is counter-intuitive but think it stops the insulin swings that cause carb binges.

It looks like I'm plateauing here at the 218-220 range. I'm going to start incorporating exercise again in the next week or so. Let's see how my body reacts!

Haven't had a weigh in in awhile, but I"m down to 195.5, a loss of about 5 pounds for the year which I'm happy with considering I'm hopefully building some muscle.

I've continued with the Spartan classes though I've been forced to miss a couple due to my daughter's soccer practice. I'm still trying to make up for those misses by doing the homework workouts regularly. I'm not at the point yet, however, where it's a habit so I have a lot of work to do to get that consistency.

The biggest thing I need to work on is eating. Too much garbage fast food and pizza due to busy schedules. I'm going to have to stop taking the easy way out when I'm hungry and be more disciplined. I do enough running and stuff on the side that weight loss should be a breeze, but I'm not getting there due to the multiple times a week I'm eating junk.

My wife and I have started meal planning, however, and we're really focusing on good clean options for both lunch and dinner, so I'm slowly turning this shipwreck around. The thing I try to keep in mind is that even though I'm not where I want to be in terms of my exercise and nutrition goals, I'm light years ahead of where I was at this point last year. So I have to look at it with perspective. A missed Spartan workout here and there is much better than last year's "no workouts at all."

I've included walnuts and lots of turmeric(mostly on the walnuts) in my diet. No weight loss, but I feel much less "stiff" than I used to so that's a plus, must be reducing inflammation. :think:
