Funny this should come up. I literally just got off the boat from the 70k metal cruise where Alestorm was the very last show. I saw them play at 2:00 this morning. :)

I’ll track down some videos later (I’m sure people are uploading them as we speak, now that we’re back on land), but it was absolutely, hilariously bonkers. Like...utter madness.

Braggart.

I liked them on Facebook or whatever, which subjected me to pictures of them on the boat.

This song is my new obssession:

Orange Goblin - Beginners Guide To Suicide

If that ain't some of the best stoner blues doom metal I've ever heard.

And, you know, this ain't bad either:

Orange Goblin - Red Tide Rising

"Gods are descending, a force unrelenting
Cthulhu will rise from the sea
Turning blood red and awaking the dead
From their aeons of suffering sleep
Monoliths rise, to fiery skies
Empires dead in the shadow of flies
Serpents unwind, to torture and bind
No one survives the ultimate fall of mankind!"

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Here's Alestorm's full pool deck set on 70K. One of the funnest shows I've ever been to.

Shame he didn't get more of the crowd, but you can get a little sense of the craziness with the giant inflatable duck and the crowd-surfing pirates (you can see my dumb ass front and center before the "wall of death". Shaved head, goatee, and sunglasses at the 32:24 mark. :)). The last song (40:05) is the best...crowd went nuts.

Talked to their tour manager after the show, and he said the duck has never made it through more than one or two songs. This time, however, it made it through the entire show, and damn near took out the drum set at one point. It was awesome.

I stumbled across the "Kodama" album from Alcest this morning. It's a black metal/pop/shoegaze hybrid (most review sites were calling it "deathgaze") that is stunningly beautiful. Oh, and it's a concept album about Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke...always a plus. :)

I'll just let them describe it:
"Kodama" is the Japanese word for 'tree spirit' and 'echo' and from the album's structure and dynamics to its cinematic sound, "Kodama" indeed 'echoes' Alcest's 2010 classic, "Écailles De Lune". But this is no simple back-to-the-roots album: the band has more punch, rhythm and organic feel than ever before. While clearly influenced by bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Dinosaur Jr, Grimes and The Cure, "Kodama" ultimately reveals itself as Alcest's 'Japanese album', drawing substantial inspiration from Japanese art and culture.

Originally triggered by Hayao Miyazaki's anime film "Princess Mononoke", "Kodama" picks up on the fate of its protagonist and, at its core, deals with the sensation of not belonging; of living in between worlds, be it city and nature or the physical and spiritual one. Duality is also crucial for the visual approach of the album, realized by French graphic designer duo Førtifem. Paying tribute to Japanese illustrators like Takato Yamamoto, the visuals portray contrasting elements like nature/urbanity, youth/death, femininity/animality and combine poetic elements with darker ones that were not present in Alcest's earlier works.
Fascinating stuff.

Ministry - AmeriKKKant

I don't follow Ministry closely, but this came out of nowhere. I thought Al Jourgensen had hung it up or at least gone on hiatus or something.... I'm really enjoying listening to this. I don't know if I "like it" yet, but it's not what I expected. I enjoyed some tracks from their recent albums, but they were very thrash-heavy. In contrast, this is surprisingly subdued in places, and hearkens back to a much older, sample and groove-heavy Ministry. Which isn't to say this necessarily sounds like classic Ministry, but it's a refreshing departure from what I was expecting, and definitely has a sound that would have been home in the early 90s. Lyrics and themes... topical, but not particularly nuanced? Not that direct indictments of Trump and recent events aren't welcome. (And nothing like a grossly conservative regime to bring socially critical bands out of the woodwork.)

(Check out that harmonica!)

It's been a while since something new to me grabbed me but the Samantha Fish Band does. Something about the Cigarbox guitar just hits that spot for me.

Looks like she's been doing her thing publicly for about ten years. So I'm behind the times but then it's about 10 years since new (to me) music sucked me in...

this Australian band called DMA'S that really, really wants to be an early 90s Britpop/janglerock band. exact same tones and production techniques, everything. it's weird.

Went and saw The Breeders at The Ogden last night. Kim Deal's voice is unchanged from the early 90s. She was on stage with her sister Kelley, a young British girl playing bass and a dude on the drums. (The interwebz tell me that Kim's the only member who's been in every incarnation of The Breeders, but Kelley was obviously an early member as well.) It was a rockin' good show. They probably played 2/3rds of Last Splash (and not nearly enough of Pod) along side plenty of their new music. When the samples for the intro to Cannonball came on I was bummed as I thought for sure that was a show capper, but they did three more tracks after that and closed the main with Gigantic (which was the only Pixies track they performed, the other cover was Happiness is a Warm Gun). The three-song encore ended with Saints.

Favorite moment of the night was their Driving on 9, their intro banter asked if anyone in the crowd had a violin. When it came time for the violin solo in the performance, the entire band just belted it out vocally. It was hilarious.

If you dig early post-punk, I'd give this show a hearty recommendation. Leaving the venue I wanted to make a twitter account @kimdealsmile. She beamed after every single track.

Bloodywood. This... is really good. I'm afraid in the west they'll be reduced to a meme (especially given their cover of Tunak Tunak Tun); in fact, I heard about them in one of those annoying Facebook videos that has a block of text at the bottom throughout the whole thing ("INDIAN STREET METAL"). But whatever works. Confronting my own bias, if someone had just shared the video without comment I likely wouldn't have clicked on it.

Ari Ari:

Tunak Tunak Tun (Cover) - Also known as "Tunak Tunak Metal (Version)". (Yes, that song, which became a meme in the west and was the inspiration for the male Draenei /dance emote in World of Warcraft, which is actually extremely catchy in its own right.)

Trying to come to terms with the fact that this album is now 25 years old, so I've been listening to this on and off all day:

I follow the lead singer on Twitter (he's apparently an adjunct professor) and the band is reuniting for a show in September to play the full album at some crazy festival in Iowa. I wish I could road trip it because I'm guessing it's going to rock. But man...25 years? Where has all the time gone?

METAL MONDAY! 🤘

Because everyone's king of something....

This is one of my favourite tracks I've discovered this year. Be sure to stick around after the bridge at 3:40 for a total tonal shift and epic climax!

Song: Heavy Lies the Crown
Artist: Orange Goblin
Album: Back from the Abyss (2014)
Genre: Heavy/Stoner Metal

"Who am I to, to make the rules, to break the rules and slay the fools
How am I, to be the man, who rules the land, with sword in hand
Fire roars, upon the shores that carry heroes off to war
Heavy lies the crown I wear, but I did swear this weight to bear
"

METAL MONDAY! 🤘

Bloodywood currently have a viral video circulating on Facebook for their new track "Ari Ari". They integrate sounds from traditional/popular Indian music and totally slay! Check out their collection of Western pop covers: https://bloodywood.bandcamp.com/album/anti-pop-vol-1. Today's selection is (as I understand it) a cover from the Indian drama film of the same name and celebrates the festival of colours.

Song: Rang De Basanti
Artist: Bloodywood
Album: Web Release/Forthcoming EP
Genre: Metal Covers

"A handful of sand from the soil of my motherland
A whiff of fragrance from carefree winds
A symphony of resonating heartbeats and breaths
The ones with fiery passion and bold red blood
Mix all these together and discover this vibrant colour
Now paint me with the colour of spring
"

Oh cool, is this a thing now? If so, I approve. :)

I've been grooving on the new album from one-man Hungarian insanity factory, Thy Catafalque. He's been putting out albums for years that mash-up all sorts of musical styles, and this one is no exception. Metal, drone, industrial, jazz, funk, new age, pop, EBM, folk, goth...his stuff has a little bit of everything, usually within the same song.
