on a Skinny Puppy kick (currently on _VIVIsectVI_) - coming back to their old albums years later, i really appreciate their (especially cEVIN kEY's) attention to detail in sound... production, layering, timing, tonality, sampling, whatever - it's always interesting. i even like all the side and solo projects (especially Download) - can't say that for many bands. and the new albums are all at least good - _The Greater Wrong of the Right_ and _Weapon_ are fantastic.

New album from The Ocean is really good. I've always thought of them as a heavier, angrier version of Tool.

Also been watching quite a few clips from Opeth's new "Live at Red Rocks" DVD. They sound absolutely amazing live...I miss Akerfeldt's harsh vocals. :(

Side note: Xmann, weren't you at this show?

I was indeed and it was glorious. A bit chilly and windy at times, but pretty high on my list of best shows I've been to.

One of my favourite albums of the year, I'm thankful Skinypupy recommended it.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

The more I listen to this album, the better it gets. All the little details that *pop* when you hear it through headphones or car audio. The guitar flourishes, the bass growling. The gallop of the drums synced with the main riff is fantastic - not something I'm used to hearing. But what makes it? The guitar solo that drops from the sky like a thunderbolt at 4:53 - it's just epic. I think they've now moved up to the band I need to see in concert...sooner than later and mainly before my hearing completely disappears.

Maybe next year, maybe no go

The new album is probably my favorite of the last few...lot of really great songs, and as you said, cool details if you listen closely.

I had the opportunity to see C&C in concert when they went on tour for The Afterman a few years ago, and it was an epic show. They sound amazing live, and the whole atmosphere with a couple thousand crazy fans singing every word is awesome. If they ever come to your area, do everything you can to be there.

Love that Toys song. Others not so much. Still testing. But what type music would you lump Coheed and Cambria into? Not really pop, rock, metal, or punk. Is it like new age rock pop?

They're most often labeled as prog rock or alt rock - and I think either is accurate. The drumming on this entire album is ridiculous!

You're probably best listening to any of their stuff as an entire album and not just singles. They are all mostly concept albums so there's a "flow" that happens when you're moving from one song into the next as the story unfolds...

This new album definitely has an 80s/90s aesthetic to it overall, but it's still prog/alt rock at the core.

If you're really going to come and hang out on the Fence, start at the beginning and listen to the reissue of where it all began:

A new Sigh album is always a big deal in my musical world, and today is no exception. One part Jethro Tull, one part black metal, one part Asian folk music, and one part straight-up nightmare fuel. Sheer insanity put to music.

Already listened to the entire album 3 times this morning, and still can't quite wrap my head around a few of the songs because there's just so much crazy going on. It's awesome.

Last night my son and I watched a 2016 Boomtown Rats concert (I had no idea they even played together since the 80's). Bob Geldof was sporting the Nick Nolte or Gary Busey look...not good.

He decided he doesn't like them because I don't like them. Over the weekend, every time I told him he had school on Monday, he'd remind me that I don't like Mondays and that he doesn't either.

Yesterday he asked to watch the Live Aid video of them playing that song.

Thanks as always for the recommendations... even when I don't comment I check out most of what's posted in this thread.

The delve into power and folk metal continues. I'm in a prime North American tour destination, but I'm still bummed most of these bands rarely tour outside of Europe.

This song is silly in the best way.

Absolutely anthemic.

I can't find a Sabaton song I don't like or that isn't catchy as hell.

That new Sigh album has sucked me down a rabbit hole of avant-garde black metal, where I came across this particular bit of insanity from Baring Teeth.

Sudy: It's not as "anthemic" as Sabaton or Equilibrium, but you may want to check out the new album from Eneferens, "The Bleakness of our Constant". It's got a blackened/folk/atmospheric metal vibe that I've really been enjoying. Reminds me a lot of Agalloch or Panopticon, and is perfect winter music. :)

Roy sings with so much feeling. The lyrics reflect my own thoughts for the last few years.

Another newly found Queen song for me. Brian wrote this as a kid when his cat died. This is Brian singing it in the first original version from 1977. As one in the comments said he sound like 50% Freddie and 50% Paul McCartney.

And this is the same some released by Brian recently for the 40th Anniversary with long lost Freddie vocals. I love Freddie but I prefer Brian's still.

Lastly a song from Queen in 1997. The last thing Deacon did with them before leaving. Just Brian , Roger, and John here of course. Princess Di's death brought it on but was used as a eulogy to Freddie. Very nice song.

I like this a lot. As I was listening to it I couldn't help but think how similar the instrumentation was to a post-rock song. Other than the style (or existence) of vocals. Speaking of which there's a really nice contrast between growls and clean vocals.

Scyth by Hulkoff is my current obsession. Broadly speaking it's folk metal, but in an eastern European sense (which is fitting given the lyrical content). Their album KVEN is also really good, but this more recent single is a delightful departure from the more traditional sound of that release. In particular I love the gruff, booming, rhythmic vocals.

listening for the first time to Pere Ubu's 1988 album _Cloudland_, which i find out was produced by Stephen Hague (New Order, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Communards, etc). it is surprisingly poppy for a Pere Ubu album and sounds great (and distinctly late 80's 'quirky' - this would have fit in IRS Records' lineup).

Blown away by this cover of "Sound of Silence" by what I presume is a metal band:

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

Live on Conan (very good sound on this one, also in a lower key): https://youtu.be/Bk7RVw3I8eg

Given the insane number of views on both of those, this has probably already been posted, apologies if so.

I did check out a couple of their other songs...not bad! Especially since I'm not a metal fan. Maybe this band is considered "metal lite" - no idea. But VERY clean, very tight. Lead vocals of course, are amazing. Would not be surprised to learn he was classically trained/went to some highbrow music school like Eastman or Oberlin.

Yes, very lite.

I hate Disturbed in general (mainly due to that ridiculous "uuuu-WA-WA-WA-WA" nonsense), but will admit that this is a pretty good cover.

Heres a version that once heard will always be heard when you try to listen to Sound of Silence.

Also if you like Bobaflex they do a mean Pink Floyd.

I actually heard Bobaflex's cover first and fell in love with it. Later I heard Disturbed and just didn't like it. Felt it was a snooze and stayed too same all through. It didn't have the music pick up hard in it like Boba's. But over time Ive fell in love with it too. I find them so different I can love both :)
