Cheesy power metal usually isn't my thing, but this new Gloryhammer album is fantastic.

Im still surprised he is still alive these days after the heart attack in the old days and just how many cigs that man puts away each day in his coffin. Plus still having a voice to sing with.

There are some mighty impressive production values going on with this latest Sabaton video.

Love Arkona. I would highly recommend seeing them live if you get a chance. They’re fantastic.

Quick story about Arkona.

On this year's 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise, they were scheduled to play an early afternoon show on the top deck (which is outdoors) of the ship. About 10 minutes before they were supposed to start, the sky opened up, and it started just pouring rain. Everyone scrambled to get all the instruments and gear covered, but they left their pre-show bumper music - which were traditional Russian folks songs - playing over the speakers. Instead of just sitting around and waiting for the storm to stop, the band encouraged everyone to come out onto the deck and proceeded to give 30 minutes of Russian folk dancing lessons in the middle of a massive rainstorm.

We didn't go out, but watched it from under cover. Looked like everyone was having a blast, and the band absolutely ripped through their set once the storm passed.

I saw Yes a bunch of times, including the 90215 tour at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. On the way there, the Spencer Davis Group version of "Gimme Some Lovin'" came on the radio and I cracked myself up imagining Jon Anderson singing it. Not even sure why that popped into my head.

The first encore of the show was Jon Anderson singing "Gimme Some Lovin'" The song does have a local connection, being featured in the Blues Brother's movie, but still.

One of the disadvantages to living in regional Australia (and Papua New Guinea for a while) is very limited access to live music. I'd love to have seen Yes, and a couple hundred other acts...

Not only have I seen them a bunch of times, but I've seen some of their components performing side projects. One such show was Pat Moraz (keyboard player for one or two albums) and Bill Bruford (legendary drummer who did at least several albums with Yes) in a show called "Music for Piano and Drums". Moraz came out in a tux, sat behind a grand piano and started playing a classical sonata he wrote. Then Bruford comes out in a wife-beater and shorts, sits behind the drum kit and launches into an epic drum solo. It was a fascinating show in a small-ish club.

The second concert I ever saw was the Yes 90125 tour. My friend's Dad was friends with the promoter and he scored us third row center stage tickets. It was an awesome show, outdoors on a beautiful summer night. We had just finished Grade 8. My mind was blown. I have loved going to shows ever since.

They dumped a bunch of the Final Fantasy soundtracks and orchestral arrangement albums on Spotify this week. I've had the "Distant Worlds" soundtracks on loop for the last couple days. I've had the opportunity to see the live show (orchestra plays FF songs with a compliation of game footage playing on a giant screen) twice now, and it's always fantastic.

While I was never crazy about the actual game, the music from Final Fantasy VIII might be the best in the entire series. Of all 15 FF games and all the spinoffs, "Liberi Fatali" is my absolute favorite.

Followed closely by this, of course.
