Read earlier that Deadsy have a new album coming out this year. They've always been a guilty pleasure of mine. The "Commencement" album was fantastic.

Fun fact: Lead singer is the son of Cher and Gregg Allman.

Pretty disappointing from an artist who spearheaded CD-ROM back in the day.

I love it.

I was surprised by the clean vocal segments and strong melodies. Really nice. Maybe that's not atypical for the band; I don't know them very well. I pretty much only tried a few of their songs once because a random internet comment referred to them as ear-bleedingly hard, and I was curious. But I didn't really find them that extreme compared to some of the stuff I already enjoy. I really like this song.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

On their first three releases, TV On The Radio has an a cappella song. They're each amazing.

After reading an article about some "Q" nonsense, this song seemed fitting.
Low supply of life
How to wake up
Insane things grow like a funny fake out
The world lines up for the great divider
A lasting dose from the low insider
When darkness veils the world, four Warriors of Light shall come.

I adored Welt back in the day. Have never given his/their later stuff a good listen. I should. Minus was always my favourite.

Unrelated, the Gary Numan original recording of Metal is a classic, but the Nine Inch Nails cover (which was my first exposure to the song) is incredible. Some might suggest the 07:00 length is bloated, but for those who enjoy Reznor's layering and soundscapes (which incorporate melodies from other Numan songs in this case), the instrumental outro is almost as amazing as the meat of the song.

I'm not a Beck fan (just never got into his stuff), but this unreleased track Iron Horse blew me away the first time I heard it on an episode of Hell on Wheels, and then turned up again when I was recently watching Sons of Anarchy.

I honestly have no idea how the drums on this track are humanly possible, but their drummer claims that there was no digital trickeration involved. I'm...skeptical.

I've got a great Lucinda Williams story.

I was in grad school at Ann Arbor all through the 90s, and late in that period I was helping to manage an independent bookstore in town. I did special orders and author events, and the guy who managed shipping and intake of boxes was named Hobart Taylor. I didn't know him well, and to me he was a friendly and kind of quiet presence around the shop, although I knew everyone respected him. He was a couple of decades older than most of us.

In 1999 Lucinda was touring for Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Several of us from the store drove over to Detroit to see her in concert, and the show was great.

At the end, Lucinda announced that she was doing an encore in honor of a special friend who was in the audience. She said he was a DJ in Texas years back when she was just getting started, and that he did a lot to help her on the road to her career. "Hobart Taylor," she said, "This one's for you."

I was floored. I later learned that only a few people at the store knew Hobart's history. It was really an amazing surprise.
Much prefer my Nazis Nuremberged.

This isn't a cry for help... I just noticed the connected theme. Still, not happy listening if you're depressed.

The Handsome Family - Lie Down (2000)

Tom Waits - The Ocean Doesn't Want Me (1992, some places list "The Ocean")

AN is often referred to as a "wall of sound" because all their songs are incredibly dense and mixed very loud. That said, I've really enjoyed their last few albums. My two favorite songs of theirs are both from the "Desideratum" album:

The "We Will Fucking Kill You/...So We Can Die Happy" combo (they're back to back on the "Whole of the Law" album) is also pretty amazing.

and i hate to say it, but the Numan albums of the past two decades have (musically) been more or less a continuation of what Reznor was doing years ago

Apparently the singer for Zeal & Ardor has a very non-metal side project called Birdmask. Really like this tune, reminds me of TV on the Radio.

I recently discovered this gem from a Polish metal band called Obscure Sphinx. Pretty heavy modern-sounding metal. The vocals come mainly from the lead singer; she growls competently but she really shines with her clean vocals. They lend the album a creepy, ethereal tone. I just fell in love with the album as soon as I heard it and had to have it. The only place I could find to buy it was the band's own website. Apparently the guitarist posted it to me from his home address, heh.

I've been listening to lots more black metal than usual lately. Not really sure why, it just seems to be scratching an itch.

For those that always thought it was weird to find the lyrics to a song (the very song the album title comes from) inside the album booklet (remember those?), but the actual song was missing:

For sure, DSO has been on my playlist forever. They’re batshit insane, and I love it.

“Synarchy of Molten Bones” is one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard...and I listen to a lot of really weird music. :)

Thanks for the recommendation! I've been listening to that album a little and really like Ita Mori and A Firm Foundation of Unyielding Despair so far. I continue to enjoy them a lot more than I though I would. While their unrelenting intensity can be exhausting, they employ some really lovely rhythms and melodies.

You'd think this would be too long at 6:33, but it's really not.
