Re: My balls hurt.
I am hesitant to get this done, only because we know at least two couples or maybe three, whose man had the procedure, only to get preggers.
With three kids already, and that last one a surprise (and how), that would VERY uncool.
I guess I could ask all three who their doctors were, and make sure I didn't go to him (how horrific would it be if it were the same doctor?!)

Re: My balls hurt.
Did they do the follow up check? I was told if any swimmers were found - dead or alive - I'd have to come back in another 6 weeks for another test. From the time you are cleared to have sex again until you get that 0 count back you are supposed to be using other birth control as live swimmers can be around for 15+ events.. I was told to hit that 15 limit before the test for the best results - which is the best Dr. prescription I've ever gotten.
Edit: That being said, they warn you there is always a chance it fixes itself. In my case, they cauterized the ends and twisted them back away from each other (I watched a bit on the second one once I knew I wasn't really feeling anything) so I wasn't too worried.

Re: My balls hurt.
Yeah... when my procedure was done I was told to um, have at it after a week and keep at it throughout the next several weeks. I was told I'd need two consecutive "clear" tests before he'd officially say the procedure was a success. My first test (4 weeks or so after) showed a few signs of life so it wasn't until two more tests (each about 4 weeks apart) until I was "in the clear".
From the description of the procedure I was given, it's not just a matter of cutting the line... a small length of the vas deferens is cut out and the ends cauterized, so the two ends would not only have to regrow to connect up, but would also have to get past the 2 cauterized ends for the connection to work again. Didn't sound very likely at all. I'm not sure if that's standard practice though.

As always, first and foremost: Ahhhhhhh
Second, my buddy had this done last year and he told me that his doctor said it would be ~12 weeks before he was officially declared "empty". I believe there were a series of tests (maybe 4 week and then 6+ weeks apart?) to demonstrate that it worked.
In closing, ahhhhhhhhhhh.

I'd forgotten about the cut out portion. They said it got sent to a lab and verified that it was the right tube that was cut. They said there wasn't much in there that looked the same but it was always good practice to verify it.. I had to agree.Daveman wrote: the description of the procedure I was given, it's not just a matter of cutting the line... a small length of the vas deferens is cut out and the ends cauterized, so the two ends would not only have to regrow to connect up, but would also have to get past the 2 cauterized ends for the connection to work again. Re: My balls hurt.
I just wanted to say I felt this way too, not even taking into account my near clinical phobia of needles. I swore there was never any way I would ever do it. But over time it became clear that the alternatives were really making my wife insane and this option was considered safe and effective. I read up about it, talked to my doctor, and took the plunge.Smoove_B wrote:As always, first and foremost: Ahhhhhhh

The worst part by far was the anticipation. The actual procedure was quick and relatively easy. There was no cutting or sutures - just two small puncture wounds. The numbing needle was a small pinch and then a weird cold sensation as the nerves just winked out. There was some tugging which gave a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach - not pain, more like what you get from a close call when kicked in the groin rather than a direct hit. A few deep breaths got me through that. Then it was just walking around gingerly until I got home. I would recommend definitely having someone drive you home and listen when they say no stairs and try to remain sitting/reclining for 48 hours. I tried to help out with the kids at one point and moved a bit too fast and really paid for it for about an hour. Also, people generally have it done on Friday and go back to work on Monday but if you can get a few extra days off, take them. I did it the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and went back on Monday - I can't imagine going back any sooner.

Sorry, that was bothering me.stessier wrote:The worst part by far was the antici.........pation.
Needles don't bother me. Getting cut-on doesn't bother me. But in the goolies? Ahhhhhhhhhh. Thankfully it's no longer a consideration for me. I mean..I'd do it if necessary, but I'd be a big baby about it.

$789.00 - $ 663.81 - $ 50.00
$150.00 - $ 95.07 - $ 50.00
Bottom was for the initial consultation, top was for procedure.

STILL have not had this done, but am ready to actually pull the trigger now.
So who do I call? I don't even know what kind of surgeon does this procedure.
Worse, I don't know how to find a GOOD one ("and thorough!" )

Just call your regular family physician. They will make a recommendation or send you to somebody already within your network.Carpet_pissr wrote:STILL have not had this done, but am ready to actually pull the trigger now.

Going in for the consultation next week.
Is there some type of member jacket or something afterwards I can expect?
Sort of like the Green Jacket for A Masters winner in golf?
Will I be getting a case of Cuban cigars delivered to my house?

ARISE GENITALIA (thread)
Consult was today. The snippity snip is scheduled for December. Wheeee!
I had to bring up the point I made earlier in the thread about knowing two other men (locally) who had this procedure, then ended up with surprise babies after the fact. Obviously more than a little disturbing, that. Nurse lady said she had been doing "this" for 22 years, and in that time, had only seen 2 cases where they needed to go back and re do the procedure (which didn't really address my concern, but whatever).

Re: My balls hurt.
My urologist said when he snips the tube he places the snipped ends on both sides of the sack. The chances of reattachment or anything like you described were very very very remote. I'd ask where he places the two ends when he is finished. If he leaves them laying next to each other then your odds increase.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Re: My balls hurt.
Normally I would just assume user error in this case (i.e. the accidental dads either didn't wait long enough before having sexy time, or they didn't go back for the sperm test, or something similar), but this is too damn important to assume anything, especially considering I have 3 kids. That is crazy enough. The parents I know that have 4 are REALLY crazy though, and seem to be in a constant state of "AHHHH!" I'm pretty sure an accidental 4th would break my wife, psychologically/mentally.Lassr wrote:My urologist said when he snips the tube he places the snipped ends on both sides of the sack. He also said there was no evidence that what he does works any better but there have been cases where the tubes have grown back together (but still an astronomically low figure) so he figures better safe than sorry.Carpet_pissr wrote:Normally I would just assume user error in this case (i.e. the accidental dads either didn't wait long enough before having sexy time, or they didn't go back for the sperm test, or something similar), but this is too damn important to assume anything, especially considering I have 3 kids. The ends were also cauterized as well as tucked to opposite sides for me and I think he made a joke about being unable to prevent miracles but giving it his best shot.

My balls were apparently being discussed a week or so ago -- and I wasn't even there. I have to be honest, I didn't appreciate it. Anyway, I think my balls are off the table at this point, though I'm not 100% sure on that. Regardless, good luck with yours Xmann.

This will be my first medical foray with new health insurance, so I am expecting some trouble on that end, but maybe I will get lucky. Just based on experience, health insurance professionals seem a bit snippy at this time of the year.

Fwiw if you haven't had it done yet, make sure it's the puncture process without stitches. I was gtg 2 days later, until I golfed. Sat out a few holes to keep the boys safe.
Cauterized with titanium clamps on the end of the tube, didn't bother with the spank check... Wasn't doing it again if it didn't take, and I would have been ok with a third kid. Alas Dr Deballster (no shit) did a good job.
