But deep fried in lard IIRC. I'm not quite old enough yet where it makes sense to combat osteoporosis by hardening the arteries. :P

Since I'm going to be there for a convention, I'm kind of planning to not spend a dime on food or drink all 5 days that I'm in town. That's what vendors are for! :D

When you get old enough, you're doomed to get both anyway. So why not enjoy it while we can.

Now lets see....where did i put that box of Gooey Buns?

Yeah, but you have to pick and choose your battles. I was losing the war until three months ago, when I gave up virtually everything that's deep-fried. Suddenly, I'm nearly 30 lbs lighter and I'm one notch on the belt away from needing a new, smaller wardrobe. I have not, WILL NOT, concede beer and pizza, though. My carcass and I have decided these are fair terms. :)

I've gona alot easier on the fried foods lately myself. My only weekness is potato chips. But i DO get the baked lays to make up for it and ride the "bicycle to nowhere" 30 minutes a day to even things out.

And would never....under any circumstances give up beer and pizza either. Simply cant do it.

No treats again this morning. This company has really gone down hill. :( And my weight has been down and everything. I deserve myself a paczki. If we had an HR department, I'd go raise holy hell.

I suggest that you Google for a bakery that sells them. I had a Clif bar so have one for me!!

I stopped at the bakery this morning for a danish, they were mobbed at 6:30 am. They didn't have the prune danish I wanted, so they offered a prune paczki instead. Unfortunately, the Asian woman behind the counter couldn't tell the difference between prune and poppyseed, and gave me the latter instead. :x I like poppyseed just fine, but if I'm going to shorten my lifespan by eating one of those things, I would have preferred something I like better.

Yep. I've been unable to find a decent chocolate-bavarian-cream paczki this year. One of the local grocery stores makes some pretty good fruit-filled paczkis, but that's it. The chocolate ones I found were stale and not that great. Ah well, my waistline rejoices.

I had no idea it was today. I would have stopped this morning. I'll just have to get fat some other way.

I brought some to work today, but people ate the raspberry ones and most of the bavarian cream ones are still there.

My sister-in-law went to a Polish bakery at 5 am this morning...the line was around the block when she got there.

At the moment, I'm waiting for the two prune paczki's I ate to have their desired effect. 8-)

I've never tried one, but I'm in the mood for a treat. Would Whole Foods probably have them?

They should. Really depends on your area. Just about every grocery store in Michigan has them, at least today anyways. I actually saw some in the grocery store last week.

I just went to a kolache place (aren't kolaches Polish) as it was the only place I could think of that might have Paczkis. The college kid behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about and said he''s Japanese.

No, they aren't. You must die for that mistake (hey, I don't make the rules).

A kolach is a type of Czech pastry. However, the Czech bakery by my house has been taking paczki orders for weeks, and had them on the shelves yesterday.

What's bad for the goose is bad for the gander...
Russia specialist Clifford Gaddy says Russia's economy is being severely hurt by the collapse of oil prices. He says not only has government revenue fallen sharply, the slowdown in economic activity is affecting millions of workers. Gaddy says that Russian car production in January fell 86 percent from the same month the previous year.
...
Anders Aslund of the Peterson Institute for International Economics says the crisis is equally acute in Ukraine. He says the withdrawal of once plentiful foreign capital has been devastating. Aslund points to gloomy economic data from January.

"Steel and mining have fallen by about 50 percent," said Anders Aslund. "Also, construction has fallen by a similar scale. And the currency has depreciated by about 50 percent, but seems to have stabilized now at a lower level."
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Well, this is the first time in probably 5 or so years I didn't have a paczki on Fat Tuesday. Reason? I'm fat. I'm actually pretty proud of myself for denying temptation. I'll bump the thread again next year though ;).

Seen that before. Yet, its not who is affected since everyone is, its about who triggered it. Which is US, so my financial crisis argument still stands. American democracy is moving toward Russian version. Thankfully with less corruption.

That's not weird, it's just cool. Thanks for keeping up the good fight. I suppose I should put out a pinball dedication thread again one of these days. :D

My wife is half Polish so I just called our local European deli, Fiona's, and no dice. I wonder if anywhere local will have them, that sure would be a cool surprise for her. I see someone tried Whole Foods an earlier year, maybe I will stop by and check at lunch. Edit: just found a place that has them and am meeting her for lunch at Schmidt's Bakery in Loveland. Woot!

So we went to IHOP anyway today. It was virtually empty, plus they have Kids Eat Free Tuesdays. Total bill for five of us was $13.45. I think we did well. I'm not sure I want to see the madness of free pancake day.
