Forum History
I think that alot of the fun and interesting occurences on ye old fora was due to the fact that the forum's had such an interesting history! Kahless and Ajaarg come to mind, as do Tony72 in his various incarnations. There's the sad stuff like bcr and the mod exodus from way back when. (Do Greybeard and Meredith know about this place?) Then there's the really picayune stuff like Hetz's arguments with Mowagi poet about WWII online and that one middle eastern fellow who argued with a lot of the more conservative members of the board incessantly. Everyone forgets interesting bits and pieces, so, what my post boils down to is: what does everyone think about setting up something to record this sort of thing? And of course, it would be awesome if people had some of this stuff cached for everyone's amusment. I'm thinking Kriminal Sopina, AssBanjo, Ajaarg's Last Stand, Smooth_B threads...the good stuff.

Quite a few forums I've visited in the past have a locked sub-forum devoted to the preservation of classic threads. I think this is a great idea - god knows the old GG had her fair share of them. It'd be nice knowing that community-adored threads are not endangered of slipping too far back in the chronology.
You should make a request in the meta-forum!

You were planning on including all of my posts, right?

PS> And since that was much more subtle than I'm known to be around here, let me spell out the meaning beneath the joke: I like the idea, but who is going to decide which threads get preserved, and would it turn into another status symbol we don't need (i.e., "since I started 3 saved threads and you haven't, my opinion must count for more here than yours")?
I'm just playing devil's advocate, mostly. I like the idea, but I see some difficulties that would need ironing out before implementing it.

Well, I'd have liked to have the Kahless vs CompUsa thread saved. Same thing with Rob_Merrit "incident" at Toys R Us or Ajarrg's last stand. I guess things that are so absurd or bannable should be saved...

If anyone can remember the date, approximate or otherwise, of any of those classic threads, they MIGHT be accessible through The Internet Archive (www.archive.org).[/url]

Bullshit. I remember it distinctly. You bragged about how when a manager tried to pull you off the guy, you ran over the manager's foot with a wheelchair and then got him fired just before Arbor Day. When his wife came to beg you to get him rehired for her children's sake, you called her a porcine bitch and told her she knew nothing about continental medeival history. Then you borrowed $40 from her and never paid it back, and then you slapped her when she told you that your Battlecruiser 3000 game has a suck-ass interface.rrmorton wrote:OH, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
ROB_MERRITT went to Toys R Us to buy Star Wars: Phantom Menace on DVD and wound up decking a guy.

Re: Forum History
So, what does everyone think about putting together something like somethingawful's system for "goldmining threads?" Mods, maybe this should go in the metaforum now.

See, without that thread being preserved you can't prove that it wasn't you. Until he comes by to plead guilty, you're stuck being that dude that actually fought for The Phantom Menace.rrmorton wrote:OH, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
