Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Well, turns out I only lost about two sets worth of posts due to the crash, so it's not going to be too hard to get back up to speed. I think I'll post my Colorado pictures to start with. Might even be some new ones I hadn't yet posted as I don't remember what was posted within those sets.

Had a bit of a surprise last night. My neighbour works for an aviation company and he came round with free tickets for the family to the Goodwood Revival, including pit passes and free vip parking for Sunday. Even better the wife has agreed to take us all.
Goodwood here http://revivallive.goodwood.com/" target="_blank
Anyways never done any sport car photography so was looking for pointers. Not done any panning so maybe not enough time to get the hang of that. I shall be using my Nex and the 18-200.
Thoughts and advice would be much appreciated from those that have any.

I'm seriously jealous. I've been trying to find time to get to the Revival for three years now. It's perfect because my wife can indulge her love for classic fashion and play dress-up, I can go to one of the coolest car events in the world, and we can both go to the UK for a vacation. Can't wait to see what you bring back.Reemul wrote:Had a bit of a surprise last night. Honestly, I think you're going to have a bit of a hard time doing action shots with your NEX. If you flip back a page, you'll see my shot of the dancers. That was with my -7 and it took lots of trial and error to get the settings and timing right. If you're going to do action shots, I'd suggest cranking up the ISO, and learning the delay between taking the shot and the actual capture. For general car shots, the thing that always gets me is that a car - especially one prepped for show - is basically a huge mirror. I've had countless shots ruined by my camera and head looking back at me from the surface of the car

Indeed, heh. I am pretty sure some well-known automotive photogs just clone that out of the image, it can be pretty hard to avoid at times.geezer wrote:I'm seriously jealous. Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Just got back from the Goodwood Revival and had an amazing time. The person who got us the tickets also got us a full hosting package. We had full access to the pit lane, including during the racing. Access to over the pit viewing, we also had our own personal Grandstand with tv's showing the race right at the end of the chicane / start of the straight and at the grid.
We met Sir Jackie Stewart 3 times world champion as we strolled through the paddock and he was showing us his cars. Also had a chat with Chris Evans (UK DJ) and avid Ferrari owner who had a Ferrari racing there.
The sound of the cars was just unbelieveable, made your ears vibrate. Kids were in heaven, my youngest who is 3 loves Yellow cars and there were a few Yellow Ferrari's which he followed all the time while my eldest just preferred the loudest cars. Even my wife didn't want to come home, just the most superb day out even with the rain at the end.
The Nex did pretty well, luckily we were close to the track and at a slower part as the cars really travel once they get going.
A few I have developed and thought more interesting really.
This was taken from the over the pit viewing area that was restricted access. This was towards the end and it was raining hard.

I am totally on this list: ACLU Posts Fed-Collected 'Suspicious' Activity Reports Online
I was working on a commercial project for a client in near a local dam and was contacted for "suspicious activity" and about 45 minutes later after the gorgeous light was gone I completed my field interview. What a pain but I understand the cops were just doing their job.

Thanks! I camped out at that location for awhile and I have a number of cars at various points along that series of turns. The nice thing about a track like COTA is that they track itself is as much a spectacle as the cars are, so the visual opportunities are vast.gbasden wrote:I love that first shot, Geezer! I'm traveling now, but when I get home I have some compositing I'm looking forward to doing tracing a car through the whole sequence. Here's a rough try - poor cropping/blending since I only have my laptop with me, but I have a great 12-shot sequence of a prototype car running through here apex to apex that I'll composite maybe next weekend...

I seriously want to attend a weekend workshop led by Enough to figure out how he does this stuff. I'm staggered by how good his HDR is.geezer wrote:Spectacular!Enough wrote:It is indeed possible to see the Milky Way within a half hour of San Fransisco, who knew? This was taken from Bodega Bay:

So, Day 23 of our trip took us to Sturgis in the off-season. We spent time at the motorcycle museum which I highly recommend. Fun place. Here are a few of my favourites:

Not sure what kind of birds these are, but they kept visiting our campsite:

And as the night wore on...

... we had no idea that the skies would be so good, so dark, affording us a chance to finally get a shot of comet PANSTARRS, when everyone we knew could only catch fleeting glimpses.

And what my Dad originally thought were city lights were actually Zodiacal Light, so bright they lit up the sky. The Comet can still be seen, as well as M31 and Jupiter.

My goodness, thank you all so much for the kind words. And maybe I really should do a workshop some day, it's not the first time I've heard that. In any case, how about a 6 vertical frame handheld 260 degree pano of Mono?

Re the workshops, I'd suggest that it's a very viable avenue for you. Your work is fantastic in general, but perhaps more importantly you've developed a unique set of specialty skills that sets it apart.

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Agreed, Geezer. I think your stuff is really good, Enough, and you have the chops to pull it off. Even going further, you could perhaps do a workshop on nighttime photography. It's what a friend did when he opened up his own studio, and the nighttime photography was a unique aspect in terms of workshops. You just don't see it done very often by professional studios as they tend to cater to different markets. Showing people how to do nighttime photography is like unlocking opportunities out of people that didn't think was possible.

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Well, just to echo everyone else, you not only have the camera skills and the Photoshop skills to pull of an awesome workshop, but you also clearly have an preexisting interest in sharing your skills and techniques with others. You are always open to sharing every detail of your process, where other photographers might want to hide & protect their special techniques. You have already repeatedly taken the time to teach things not only to your buddies here at OO, but also to random strangers on Flickr. You could not possibly be a more perfect candidate for leading workshops. I could easily see a Michael Menefee book on HDR photography and a series on night photography sitting right next to the Scott Kelby books on my shelf.
Just to gush a bit more, look at this post by Scott Kelby with him saying he'd love to attend this workshop with a night photography expert and a landscape photographer. Look at some work by Gabe Biderman and Tim Cooper and just try and tell me that your work isn't in the same league.

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Thanks guys. I think sometimes I have suffered from questioning myself on if something like that could take off for me. And now some of my colleagues have started to offer said workshops and they are selling out which has made me start to think it could work. Of course those guys don't have other jobs competing with it so there's that too. I may need to think on how I can structure my life to be able to make this happen.
In any case, I am so happy right now. I just agreed to sell an image to Random House for a NYT's best-selling fiction author's new book cover. Fingers crossed there are not any kinks and this comes to fruition. It will pay for the new Think Tank Urban Disguise 60 and Airport Takeoff I just treated myself too, hah. Here's the image they are planning to use:

We were making good time on our trip back home after not spending all that much time in Sturgis the previous day. We thought of things we could do, and this led us to something I was keen on seeing earlier when we first drove through South Dakota, and that was Pioneer Auto. I found out later that Pioneer Auto was a location the American Pickers went to, so that was pretty cool. Saw the episode a few weeks ago. Lots of cars here

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Been a bit absent lately from posting, but have enjoyed all the pictures, especially the spitfire
Now it's spring in Australia, i'm getting back into photography, after a 6 month hiatus.
First up, is a blue tongue lizard I managed to catch in my in-laws garden

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
I love that we have active folk like Stefan that live in the southern hemisphere so we get to enjoy spring/summer images right as we go into our fall/winter. That blue tongue lizard is beautiful specimen!
I've just returned from a journey to Orcas Island in Washington State to visit a friend. It was mostly a social visit but I did sneak in some photography. On the way back I had a long layover at Sea-Tac Airport and took advantage of a gorgeous sunset coming in through the wall of glass in the central terminal.
I did do a version with stronger silhouettes but just couldn't let those photogenic dual red rollers go.

I love Sea-Tac. It's such a great airport. I've spent a lot of time in that central food hub watching the planes go by before my flights.

Love that picture and the timing of the plane, exact centre of the square How did you avoid it being totally overblown with the sun coming at the lens or are the windows heavily tinted?

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Thanks all!
On flickr I mentioned that this is a two exposure blend, but forgot to say that here. The glass is glazed and fairly resistant to flare but you definitely need multiple exposures to extend dynamic range like this. I manually blended the two frames using luminosity masking. And yeah, I probably shot around 70+ frames to get a jet where I wanted it, heh.Stefan Stirzaker wrote:Love that picture and the timing of the plane, exact centre of the square How did you avoid it being totally overblown with the sun coming at the lens or are the windows heavily tinted?

I forgot to call it "a box of pure malevolent evil, a purveyor of
insidious insanity, an eldritch manifestation that would make Bill
Gates let out a low whistle of admiration," but it's all those, too.

Those are amazing. Even without the colour the clarity of some of those pictures is just superb.xwraith wrote:Colorized civil war photos

More from the local area. This weekend we went to Onaping Falls, which is the site of the famous A.Y Jackson painting, and about 45 minutes from my place.

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
That graffiti is annoying, and what's up with the Free Tibet people being the leading cause? Ughh, clearly enlightenment does not come as part of the deal.
I had fun photographing star trails above Sucia Island and the light pollution of Vancouver BC on my recent trip to the San Juans in WA:

Re: Perpetual Photography Thread
Yeah, the graffiti is an eyesore in an otherwise beautiful place. Lots of visitors, so I guess they figured many would see their message.
