Shatner's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"

Post by IceBear »

I'm sure we've all seen it before, but it's so bad it's funny.

The Shat singing the Cramps is all kinds of pure punk awesome!
For me, the words “William Shatner sings” were never a rhetorical question but an invitation to accompany the great man on a Euterpean mission to boldly go where no man had gone before. Just take a listen to albums such as The Transformed Man, Live, Has Been, Seeking Major Tom, and of course, Ponder the Mystery and you might just understand what I mean. These are not just merely records but ports of entry into Shatner’s world—mini-musical biographies that really should be dipped into twice a day before, with, or after food but never while operating heavy machinery.

As you can probably imagine, if not I’ll draw you a picture, how delighted I am to find Mr. Shatner has covered the Cramps song “Garbageman” for a forthcoming album compiled by radio host and king of novelty songs Dr. Demento called Covered In Punk which is set for release in January 2018.
Black Lives definitely Matter Lorini!

Stewie's version is a line by line and scene by scene re-enactment.

It's amazingly hilarious while being true to the original in almost every way.

I wonder what Shatner thinks of it after all this time.

Considering he has a followup album that was released about a decade ago, I'd say he's pretty fine with it. In fact, I'd venture to guess the whole thing was done tongue-in-cheek.

Given the sixties, the editing, and his demeanor, I seriously doubt it was tongue in cheek.

edit: Confirmed. Shatner is on record that it was not done for comedic effect.

No, I meant the followup. Yes, I'm sure it originally wasn't intended for comedic effect, but the fact that there is even a followup to it suggests that he's quite Ok with it, and that by this point, he's been rolling with it, and that this time, it's done tongue firmly in cheek, because he knows what kind of reaction Lucy got.

What do you mean, "this time?" The Cramps cover?

I was talking specifically about Lucy.

Common People and the album it was on. That one felt like he was rolling with it and having fun with it knowing how bad Lucy was, because how could he not? And the album actually had a good reaction. What I meant by all this was that, if there was a followup, he must be fine with how it all turned out, performance and reaction, moving on to embrace it with the followup, and that's why I mentioned it. I don't think he would have done it otherwise.

I once traveled to Philly with my now ex-wife and played nothing but Shatner songs for the entire ride. Which might partly explain why she is now my ex-wife.
