WTF is your avatar?

Post by Isgrimnur »

There are some around here that are cryptic, of indeterminate origin or just outright unidentifiable. Specifically, I've been staring at Remus's for days trying to figure it out.

Mine is the Holy Titanium Spork!!

I can tell you that one at least. It's Baby Richard, from the webcomic "Looking for group".

My avatar here should be fairly obvious, it's from Napoleon Dynamite.

Dang, now I wasted my post count of 666 that I wanted to keep.

I'm not that enthusiastic to say "I highly recommend reading the entire series. It will have you laughing out loud and addicted in no time." like he does, but I admit, I do read that one semi-regularly since I found it, which was just slightly after they started. It's not that great, more like popcorn or bubble gum, but at least you know what to expect, it's drawn quite well, and Richard is good comic relief. The first six strips are still the best, as they're the best written ones. Wish all of them were of that quality.

Oh, hey, if anybody needs webcomic recommendations, I got dozens.

I'll let Wikipedia do the talking. This is in reference to a story collection called "The King in Yellow" written by Robert W. Chambers in 1895:
The first four stories are loosely connected by three main devices:

* A play in book form entitled The King in Yellow
* A mysterious and malevolent supernatural entity known as The King in Yellow
* An eerie symbol called The Yellow Sign

The color yellow signifies the decadent and aesthetic attitudes that were fashionable at the turn of the 19th century, typified by such publications as The Yellow Book[1], a literary journal associated with Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley. It has also been suggested that the color yellow represents quarantine — an allusion to decay, disease, and specifically mental illness. For instance, the famous short story "The Yellow Wallpaper", involving a bedridden woman's descent into madness, was published shortly before Chambers' book.
H.P. Lovecraft referenced "The King in Yellow" in some of his stories. My avatar is the supernatural entity known as the King in Yellow as depicted in the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game.

I based my name off both the Lovecraftian reference and the fact that in Age of Empires I always picked the color yellow for my team because the contrast made my units easy to see.

Red-headed mermaid being captured (?) by an overlord. I went back and forth about whether to change my avatar, because I really liked my old one, and will probably go back to it sometime, but I was in the mood for a change. I fully intend to dress up as my old avatar for Halloween some year... and I should probably find where I saved that picture... I hope I didn't lose it in my recent laptop crash.

Option 3 ended up being my avatar for my Flickr account.
