Your vehicular history....

Post by DD* »

So, what did (and do) you drive?
  • 1984 Ford Mustang, silver - parents
  • 1986 Ford Ranger, white/blue - company lease
  • 1989 Ford Escort GT, dark red - sold to a cousin
  • 1991 Ford Escort GT, green - stolen in Houston TX
  • 1992 Ford Taurus, black - leased
  • 1994 Ford Probe GT, blue (loved this car) - traded in
  • 1997 Ford F-150 Lariat, dark red - leased
  • 2000 Ford F-150 Supercrew, green - leased
  • 2002 Jaguar X-type, grey - traded in
  • 2004 Mercury Mariner, brown - traded in
  • 2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4, black - sold ( :( - I still miss my baby)
  • 2000 Mercury Sable, black - 94K miles and counting...
Needless to say, I get the Ford employee discount! :D I'd say my favorites were the Probe, both my F-150's, and definitely my Super Duty.

Next vehicle will be (hopefully) a 2004-05 Ford Excursion, possibly a 2004 Land Rover Discovery, or another pickup truck.

Pre-license:
'76 Chevy pickup of some sort
'80 Kubota Medium tractor

Post-license
'84 Chevrolet Suburban Silverado (ca. 1989-92)
'83 Mercury Colony Park Station Wagon (ca. 92-96)
'89 Mercury Grand Marquis (1996-2004)
'99 Mercury Cougar (1998-present)

Favorite was the Suburban. It was the cross country type, very nice. Had to get rid of it because it took regular gasoline and there were no regular pumps left (and lead additive was expensive).

Cougar is the first car I owned/drove regularly that wasn't a V8.

Pictures all swiped from GIS.

Image
1977 Chevy Nova Concours, silver - hand me down from parents

My high school/ college car. It was big so I was always the driver when we went somewhere.

Image
1996 Honda Del Sol, black - my daily driver for 13 years

Great little car. It was my commuter vehicle and was perfect when I lived downtown and had to parallel park daily - but when Elise came along it was only a matter of time before it had to go.

Image
1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, blue - my wife's car that I occasionally have to drive

She bought this before she knew me. Sadly it's still running despite my best efforts. It JUST BARELY failed to qualify for Cash for Clunkers.

Image
2009 Chrysler 300, clearwater blue -

Purchased this past February. Incredible amounts interior room and an amazing ride. I love it more than should be legal.

1991-ish Subaru Legacy
1995 Dodge (what the hell was it - 2 door dodge)
2001 Lexus IS300
2005 Ford Mustang GT
2006 Honda Civic EX Sedan

These are just my cars, not counting anything bought for my wife, and other than 3 months or so I never owned 2 cars at the same time. For the record that first of 15 cars was purchased in 1991, the last was purchased in 2006. 15 cars in 15 years.

I just test drove a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 and they made a decent so might be adding #16 to the list shortly assuming the wife and I can come to an agreement.

1995 Saturn SL2
1998 Ford Escort ZX2

The Saturn was my brothers, but he bought another car just before I got my license, so the Saturn became mine. I drove that until the summer of 2004, when it needed to have the transmission replaced. I ended up getting my escort from CarMax, and I'm still driving it now. I hope it will last for a couple more years, but I finally paid it off and now I'm convinced it will break down at any moment.

2004 was the year we were hit by 4 different hurricanes. I pushed the Saturn under a tree that I was convinced was going to get knocked down...and of course not even a damn limb fell off the tree. I ended up selling it for $200. :x

Although I've been driving for a long time, I've only ever owned four cars.

1. 1978 Chevrolet Caprice Classic - big 4 door sedan my grandfather got from his company's fleet and sold me for $1000 right before I got my license. Kind of a boat, but I loved the 350 V8. I owned this one for almost 10 years but only put about 50,000 miles on it.

2. 1984 Chevrolet S10 Pickup 2WD - I bought this for $4k after some other car plans fell through. Not a bad vehicle, but I was living in Montana at the time and hated it during the winter months. Due to a financial windfall, I decided to replace it after owning it for less than a year.

3. 1992 Jeep Cherokee 4WD - nice SUV and a great winter vehicle, unlike the pickup. Paid about $8k for it. Too bad I moved to Seattle a little over a year later! So it ended up being mainly a commuter vehicle. But I did get a good 50k out of it.

4. 2002 Saturn SL - small compact sedan I bought new for less than $10k and still drive. It has just under 80k on it right now and has had zero issues. I'll probably keep this for another few years, at least.

Just two cars for me.

1999 Honda Accord V6 - bought in 2002 after I graduated college.
2009 BMW 328i

Plus the assortment of cars of my parents and friends that I borrowed, but they don't count.

1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Image

Sold it to help pay for....

1967 Pontiac Firebird (Actual car pictured)

Image

After getting my license suspended for the third time my parents sold the Firebird and told me to buy something less inclined to attract the attention of the constabulary.

I desperately want to get another one before I die.

1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Image

Traded towards purchase of...

1976 Chevrolet Silverado (Not lifted like this one though)

Image

Gave this to my dad when I was in the Navy. Not really sure what ever happened to it.

1987 Nissan Pulsar NX (My first non-GM, non-V8 car)

Image

Traded in towards...

1991 Chevrolet Camaro

Image

My first new car! After the engine blew I traded it even up for...

1980 Chevrolet Blazer

Image

Transmission and transfer case blew up so I sold it and leased....

2001 Dodge Ram

Image

When the lease was up I bought...

1985 Chevrolet Blazer

Image

Shortly after buying this gas started to really get up there in price so I picked up...

2005 Honda Shadow 750

Image

Which was eventually repossessed due to my not paying them for six months or something. Whatever.

I also blew the transmission in the '85 Blazer and sold it to a friend for $500

Currently I don't own any vehicle. I occasionally get to drive my wife's 2007 Honda Fit.

I've only actually owned two cars in my life:

1990 Toyota Corolla (Red) - first car, was a hand-me-down from my mom. Got it in '93 and drove it for 12 years. Ended up totalling it when I rear-ended somebody who stopped suddenly in the rain.

2005 Toyota Corolla (beige) - bought it new and love it, though if I had been able to afford to step up to the Camry at the time I would have gone that route for the extra leg room. Still, it's reliable, easy to drive, and has never given me a bit of trouble. Best of all it will be paid for by this time next year.

When it comes to vehicles, I'm all about practicality.

Skipping my mom's cars I used to drive, I'll begin with:

~1982 Ford Fairmount Wagon (Bought for $1.00, sold to wreckers for about $70 a week later - part of the exhaust fell off en route)
1985 Mazda 626 (Oscillating vents!)
1995 Pontiac Sunfire (5 head gaskets)
1998 GMC Sierra Extended Cab (Moved to the US and had to give it back to a Canadian branch)
1998 Dodge Durango (put almost 60k miles on it in less than a year and got out of it via work)
1999 Chrysler Intrepid (Garbage - left me stranded in CT, NJ and NY)
2001 Hyundai XG300 (Uber reliable for almost 90k miles)
1973 Porsche 911 (Was a salvage title, refurbed for the track, never street driven - Sold in January, 2006)
2004 Saab 9-3 Linear (Also garbage - also got rear ended and it never drove the same again)
2007 Chrysler Equinox (was okay, but I decided to get something more functional)
2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab (current car and love it, despite the mileage)

Since being with my wife she had:
1998 Honda Civic (3 year lease iirc)
1998 Audi A4
2003 Ford Explorer (when the kids came along, was also my tow vehicle for my 1973 911)
2006 Chrysler Town and Country
2009 Honda Odyssey

'77 Mercury Monarch [1989-1990]. Grandpa's old car turned older brother's old car turned into my high school car. Freshmen couldn't have cars on campus at Tech, so I left it at home. Was fortunate as it only had power steering for when I turned right, and the brakes were goners. My oldest brother managed to somehow navigate it down to Chicago (six-hour drive) without crashing and drove it around town for that winter before he left it in the parking lot at work one weekend and came back to find it firebombed.

'85 Buick Riveria [1991-1996]. Drove around at college, though I had to disable the auto levelling feature as during a snowstorm it'd level itself until the battery was dead. Drove out to Colorado for a summer job, car broke down each day of the three-day trip. When I returned in November of '96 there was a family emergency, so I didn't stop to fix the was-sagging now-dragging exhaust system before I pulled in the driveway. Tossed the keys to my little sister (who was in high school at the time) and that was that.

'88 GMC Jimmy [1996-2002]. Purchased from a golfing buddy of Dad who only used it in the summers to tow his boat. Great truck, took me a lot of places. Drove it in college in the UP, in Minnesota for a few years, back up to college for a summer, out to Colorado (where I slept on a buddy's couch and looked for work), and eventually let it rust in front of my house after I got married.

'97 Jeep Wrangler [2000-current]. Seeked out Wrangler options online to see what was available (and there are a shit-ton of them available in Colorado). Found the one that best matched what I wanted, and called the phone number (a cell phone number for a dude listed in a city about 30 minutes away). Turned out the guy was a coworker and worked about three cubes over from where I was sitting at the time. Test drove at lunch, owned by the end of the week. Still strip the top and doors off of it to drive around every summer, then bundle back up for any severe weather in the winter.

'07 MINI Cooper S [2007-current]. First car purchased new. Actually ordered it piece-by-piece, then tracked it as it was built, loaded on a freighter, shipped across the Atlantic, through the Panama canal (have web cam photos of the freighter it was on), and unloaded in California. Has been a scream to own, and I'm considering getting a MINI Speedster once they're available for production.

That might have been mine. :)

Let's see how many I can remember...

1967 Chevrolet, metallic tan. I don't know what model it was, it just said "Chevrolet" on it. It was considered a small car in its day. Traded it.
1972 Opel GT, sky blue. Totaled it.
1974 Mustang II, brown with tan vinyl top. It was made of bondo and duct tape. Sold it for $100.
1979 (?) Datsun 710, green. Sold it.
1982 Ford Escort, orange. This was my first new car. Totaled it.
(Went without a car for 10 years)
1994 Saturn SC-2, turquoise. Traded it.
2004 Mazdaspeed Miata, red

If you count the wifemobiles that I've shared over the years you'd have to add two more Escorts and a Subaru.

1990 Plymouth Voyager minivan - Mom's car that I borrowed while in highschool and was later given to me while in college. It didn't make it past 100k for me but it was part of a bad rear end collision from a drunk cement truck driver when it was brand new and suffered all kinds of random problems that you never see for the duration of its life since then. Sold it while it still functioned.

1995 Chevy Van - free from dad when he got his suburban conveniently around the time the minivan was dying, almost made it to 200k before I "totalled" it in a small collision that caused minimal damage to the car and no damage to anything else, it just wasn't worth repairing a car that had tires on it that were worth more than the rest of the vehicle. Sold the tires and scrapped the rest.

2005 Pontiac Vibe - Bought when I got a decent job out of college and needed a car that would be good on gas for commuting and still be able to handle roadtrips and transporting all my guitar and recording equipment as needed. Just hit 75k on it last week and still going strong.

1965 Dodge Dart - Given away to me by a neighbor. A piece of crap, but it ran. Got tired of always having to short the starter with a screwdriver to get it going when winter came, and junked it.

1974 AMC Hornet Sportabout - Used. Paid $400. Another shitbox. Would eat starters regularly - 7 in the 18 months I owned the car. It would never get stuck, though. Not in ice, snow, slush, or mud. Towards the end of its days, I would ram it into snowdrifts to try. Eventually junked it.

1981 Datsun 200SX - Used. $2100. Kept it for eight years. Bought it in good condition except for a large dent in the door. Engine ran flawlessly for the 170k miles I had it, and I never changed the plugs. The air also ran reliably, and it was never recharged. 4 years of Wyoming winters followed by 4 years of Vegas summers didn't do the body or interior any favors, though. Came out one morning to find someone had rammed it in the parking lot overnight. It still ran OK, but lots and lots of electrical problems, so I junked it.

1988 Mazda RX-7 - Used. Paid $2500 to a guy who just bought it from his doctor, but was forced to sell as his wife was worried he'd kill himself with it *whip sfx*. Great condition except for a crack on the rear bumper. I kept it for 9 years (130k miles), and for the first eight, it was pretty reliable and always fun to drive. Repair costs toward the end and a job change forced me to unload it. Donated to charity.

2007 Hyundai Tucson - My first new car. $20k. My job requires schlepping laser and 3D scanner parts to and from the Strip so I needed something more practical than my RX. It's probably the weakest 6-cylinder vehicle I've ever driven, but it's been dependable so far (50k miles).
