This weekend = OPERATION: GET TO IT!

Post by rrmorton »

I hereby declare this coming Saturday and Sunday, October 23rd & 24th, an Official Brutesquid GET TO IT Gaming Weekend.

I don't know how many of you are in the same boat as I am, with one or a couple or a bunch of PC/video games that you've purchased just sitting around the house totally untouched and unplayed and neglected but I suspect I'm not alone. Since becoming a Dad I've seen my gaming time substantially reduced but I still haven't adjusted my purchasing habits accordingly. I have a ridiculous backlog.

If you went back in time to 1981 and told 10-year-old Robby that someday he'd own almost two dozen computer and video games that he'd never even played he would have broken down weeping for his future-self. Well, this weekend I'm gonna make my little inner-Robby stop crying.

For those of you wishing to GET TO IT, here are the rules:

-Sometime between now and tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 5pm, post a list of all your unplayed or neglected games across the PC and whichever consoles you own.

-Once the weekend begins, start playing, you bastard! Stay up late. Lose sleep. Annoy friends and family. Just play!

-As we work our way through our games, come back and check them off your list. Feel free (but not obligated) to post info about how long you played, brief impressions, whatever. Just don't dilly-dally. GET TO IT.

You don't have to dig into the meat and potatoes of each game on your list, though you can if you want. Just try not to lose sight of the GTI big picture. The goal is to no longer have any games you've never even played.

Here's my list:

PC
-Rome: Total War X
-Warhammer: Dawn of War X
-Unreal II X
-Call of Duty X
-Kohan II X
-Warlords Battlecry III X
-Thief 3: Deadly Shadows X
-Tribes Vengeance X
-Neverwinter Nights - Hordes of the Underdark X
-Lords of the Realm III (yeesh, I have no interest in this) X
-Sacred X
-Space Colony X

XBOX
-Kingdom Under Fire
-The Suffering
-Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
-Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
-Metal Arms
-Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

PS2
-Jak II
-Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
-Shadow Hearts
-Shadow Hearts: Covenant
(I might only play the original SH to avoid sequel spoliers.)

Gamecube
-Paper Mario : The Thousand Year Door

SO WHO'S WITH ME?!

(Note to mods, since this is for both PC & Console gamers, I didn't know which room to put it in.)

Oh, how I wish I could participate. Grrr... I'm about finished with my current PC Game de mois and would love to do a smorgasbord weekend to see what I want to get wrapped up in next. But I can't even justify it in my own head, let along try to float this one past the family...

Grrr...

I'm going to have to vicariously live GTI Weekend through the rest of the OOers out there.

Brutesquid. Hehe.

As luck would have it, my wife is taking our son out of town this weekend, so I was already planning something of this sort, along with catching up on several movies I haven't seen yet. I'll update this list later tonight but off the top of my head here's what I know I've either not played yet or never finished and not played in so long that it doesn't matter anymore:

PC
Galactic Civilizations
Secret Weapons over Normandy
Hidden and Dangerous 2
Undying
Doom 3
FarCry

PS2
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Ratchet and Clank II: Going Commando

So that's not too many, but I only have 48 hours or so. So count me in!

Wow, Bob, that's some backlog! I sense O:GTI might bring out clear statistical evidence of middle-aged men clinging desperately to their youth upon entering fatherhood. Where's Simon's list?

Hmm. My wife is actually leaving town for the weekend for a retreat for a board she serves on. Upside: she's not there to disapprove ("But dear! It's OPERATION GET TO IT! Why do you hate America?"). Downside: I have the kids. Hmm. Where's the Benedryl . . .

I just told my wife about Operation: Get To It and when she saw my list she said, "Holy shit! I have a better idea. How 'bout Operation: Return Games." :D

And to those who can't participate this weekend: I have a feeling this might take me more than two days so let this be merely the 1st of many Official Get To It weekends.

Sorry, it's supposed to be mild this weekend so I'm planning to go bike riding instead. This time of year, any given weekend could wind up being the last ride until spring.

All right, why not? I'm in!

Current Backlog:

Um, gee, I guess I'm not in. Haven't upgraded my PC for a long while. No new games will work on it, thus I have bought no new games. Been working on my old backlog, successfully(see list above), for a while now. Someday, I'll get a new PC- and maybe then I'll only need to spend $10 in the bargain bins for games like Thief 3 and Doom 3 (how's that for a silver lining?:|).

In other news: I've got 7 episodes of Homicide Season 5 and 16 episodes of Arrested Development Season 1 for a DVD backlog and 5 books on my book backlog that I'm steadily working on. I'll be working on those this weekend for sure.

Actually I just picked a big fight with the wife, and while I was waiting the appropriate amount of time before slinking back and telling her what a clueless ass I am and being generally apologetic, I managed to get two of the big items off of my to-do list (that I had earmarked for the weekend). If I can pick one more good blow-out fight with her in the next few hours, I may end up in great shape for O:GTI Weekend.

Cross your fingers!

If it makes you feel better, last year I got a list of 70+ uncompleted games from Running Man and put them in an order (that made sense to me) for him to be able to try and work his way through them.

Basically, I sorted them on time to complete.

I don't think he finished the FIRST one. :D

Right now I'm trying to finish:

Warhammer: Dawn of War (on mission 9 of 11)
Elite Force 2
IGI 2
Thief: DS
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Warcraft 3

I'm actually pretty proud of my gaming "finished" list for this year.

As I've told slambie (when I beat Morrowind), you really have to treat each game like a book. If you're not into it after 2 hours, walk away. But if you are - condition yourself to play it at least an hour a day until you're done.

Then move onto the next one. Otherwise, you'll jump from one half-completed game to another.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

JEEPERS CREEPERS!

Maybe we should call off the whole operation so everyone can pitch in to help slambie with her games.

Remember everyone, Operation GTI isn't about the games we want to finish. (We all have heaps and heaps of those.) This is about games you have yet to even start.

For motivation and so Jeff V can make me look bad:

2009 Finals: Biking: 93 miles Running: 158 miles (I know it sucked, but I had a hernia most of the year)

I cling to my youth by living vicariously through Ethan and buying him as many Hot Wheels as he wants. :D

My list isn't that big (Burnout 3, Riddick, and Fable mainly), but I'm out this weekend since Ken is here visiting and we're heading to Victoria on Saturday. You guys have fun with all that gaming.

Yes. I'm doing my part to support an industry, dammit. :)

....Christ, I need professional counseling, don't I? My control point is installing games so I never have more than a handful in progress at one time and generally don't load up another one until I move one over to the done column (although there are exceptions to that rule). In the mean time all the games I have every intention of playing pile up behind them.

When I'm 93, tottering around the old folks home, I'll be firing up Painkiller and be glad that I decided to purchase it 50 years earlier when it was still available.

No kidding. slambie, thank you for making me feel better about myself. :)

It would take me most of the weekend just to list my unplayed games, and I'd probably have to buy another 80G hard drive just to install them all.

O:GTI is a great idea though. Maybe I will try it with every PC game I have currently installed AND either haven't played or haven't played past the tutorial/first level. Using those criteria, a quick look at the D:\ reveals:

Fallout 2 (haven't played very far into FO1 though)
Serious Sam: Second Encounter
Undying ('tis the season)
Etherlords
NOLF 2
Freespace 2
Freedom Force
Kingpin
Jedi Outcast
Crimson Skies
Mechcommander 2
Gothic
System Shock 2
Thief 2
Vietcong
Nox

Gah, and I've got many, many more times that on the shelf that have not been installed at all. I am a bargain bin slut.

If I had time to play all of the games in my queue, the list would look something like this:

Age of Mythology
Rise of Nations Throne and Patriots
Hearts of Iron 2
Proud and the Few
Tin Soldiers - Alexander the Great
Mafia
Neverwinter Nights
Morrowind - Bloodmoon
Korsun '44
Age of Sail 2 Privateers Bounty
French and Indian War
Homeworld 2
Icewind Dale 2
No One Lives Forever
War in the Pacific
IL2 Sturmovik
Highway to the Reich
Age of Wonders 2 Shadow Magic
KOTOR
Farcry
Campaigns on the Danube
Blitzkrieg
Europa 1400
1602 AD
Age of Empires

If I looked beyond my desk, I could probably triple this list.

Wow. Some of you have a ridiculous list of games.

I don't have anything that I've yet to start, but I have several I need to finish, or at least make progress on.

Sadly I have a very very busy weekend ahead of me, but I'll drag my PC home to my parents house and try to squeeze a few hours in.

The games I'll be working on:
- Far Cry (if I can get it to stop stuttering)
- Doom3
- KOTOR
- Undying
- Fallout

I'll narrow my list down to:

Sacred - hardly played
RTW - played 2x, my son has taken it from me!
Kohan II - ok I have played this a fair bit. Want to finish it
Planescape: Torment - ditto above, I stopped when my PC bogged down
KOTOR - never got to be a jedi, sniff

and if I run out of all those

System Shock 2 - did quit this way early.

(edit to show how I've hardly played some of these)
When all is said and done, there's more said than done.
