Hyundai is recalling nearly a half-million midsize cars in the U.S. to replace the engines because a manufacturing problem could cause them to fail.

The recall covers 470,000 Sonata sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years equipped with 2-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline engines. At the time, the Sonata was Hyundai's top-selling vehicle in the U.S.

The company also is recalling nearly 100,000 Accent small cars because the brake lights can fail.

In documents on the Sonata recall posted Friday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Hyundai says that metal debris may not have been fully removed from the crankshaft area during manufacturing at Hyundai's Alabama engine plant. That can restrict oil flow to the connecting rod bearings, and since they are cooled by oil, they could fail. If that happens, the engines could stall and cause a crash.

So far, Hyundai said it has no reports of crashes or injuries from the problem. The company said in documents that a worn connecting rod bearing will make a cyclical knocking noise, and it also could cause the oil pressure warning light to illuminate. Continued driving with the problem can cause the bearing to fail and engine stalling.

The company said that the 2011 Sonata was the first Hyundai vehicle to use engines made in Alabama, where the company initially used a mechanical process to remove machining debris from the crankshaft. That process was changed to a high pressure wet blasting system in April of 2012.

Hyundai discovered the problem when owners started reporting engine noise. In June of 2015, NHTSA raised the issue with Hyundai, which said it didn't consider the issue to be a safety problem because owners would get warnings. But NHTSA told the company it was concerned about the possibility of high-speed stalling. Hyundai decided to recall the cars on Sept. 2, according to the documents.

Dealers will inspect the cars and replace engines at no cost to owners, a company spokesman said. The company also will increase the engine warranty for 10 years or 120,000 miles.

Owners will be notified Nov. 2, and they'll get a second notice when the replacement engines are available.

Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor declined to disclose how much it will cost to replace each engine.

The Accent recall covers certain 2009 to 2011 models. It's an expansion of a recall issued in 2013. Hyundai says the brake light switch can fail, and the lights won't come on when a driver steps on the brakes. Also, the cruise control may not be deactivated by stepping on the brake, and the gear shifter may get stuck in the "park" position.

The company says in documents posted by NHTSA that it has no reports of crashes or injuries.

Dole Fresh Vegetables is voluntarily recalling bagged spinach distributed in 13 states due to possible salmonella contamination, the company said.

Dole said in a press release that no illnesses had been reported and that the company is cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration.

This precautionary recall stems from an "isolated instance" in which a sample of Dole Spinach yielded a positive result for Salmonella in a random sample test conducted by Michigan's Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, company said.

U.S. auto safety regulators will fine Takata Corp. of Japan $70 million for lapses in the way it handled recalls of millions of air bag inflators that can explode with too much force, a person briefed on the matter said Tuesday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has the authority to add up to $130 million to the penalty if Takata doesn't obey terms of a five-year agreement reached over the issue, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the deal hasn't formally been announced.

The agency has scheduled a 2 p.m. news conference in Washington to unveil the penalty, which could be a record if it grows to $200 million. The person said that Takata will pay the fine in six installments over five years.

Takata's air bag inflators can spew shrapnel into drivers and passengers in a crash and are responsible for eight deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide. So far, about 23.4 million driver and passenger inflators have been recalled on 19.2 million U.S. vehicles sold by 12 automakers. The agency continues to investigate whether the company's side air bag inflators also should be recalled.

Takata also still faces hundreds of lawsuits and a criminal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Takata's air bags are inflated by an explosion of ammonium nitrate, and investigators so far have found that prolonged exposure to airborne moisture can cause the propellant to burn too fast. That can blow apart a metal canister designed to contain the explosion and shoot out metal fragments. Most of those injured or killed live in high-humidity states that border the Gulf of Mexico.

U.S. supermarket chain Jewel-Osco removed all of its Essential Everyday 100% Parmesan Cheese from shelves amid concerns about the use of cellulose, a food additive made from wood.

The move follows a Bloomberg News investigation published Feb. 16 that revealed a canister of the grated cheese tested by an independent laboratory contained 8.8 percent cellulose. While federal regulations don’t specify a range, levels of 2 to 4 percent are enough to achieve anti-clumping effects the additive is used for, according to Dean Sommer, cheese technologist at the Center for Dairy Research in Madison, Wisconsin.

Industry experts estimate 20 percent of domestically produced Parmesan cheese may be mislabeled, largely due to fillers like cellulose in grated products.

Other retailers said they’re investigating the contents of their grated products. A U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspection of a cheese company in 2012, details of which were obtained by Bloomberg News through the Freedom of Information Act, said “no Parmesan cheese” was used in manufacturing Target Corp.’s Market Pantry brand 100% grated Parmesan Cheese, as well as Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc.’s Best Choice 100% Grated Parmesan Cheese. The two companies didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday.

...Tri-Union Seafoods, which operates the plant in which the recalled tuna was packaged, announced the voluntary recall of more than 107,000 cans of its own Chicken of the Sea brand tuna Thursday afternoon.

Texas Star Nut & Food Co. is expanding its recall of Nature’s Eats brand pistachios to include additional brands and trail mixes distributed nationwide because of possible Salmonella contamination.

The pistachios and snack mixes were sold between Aug. 13, 2015, and Feb. 24 this year. Consumers are advised to check their homes for the products and return them to the stores where they bought them or discard them.

Brands added to the recall are Fresh Choice and Southern Grove. The company has stopped distribution of all products containing pistachio kernels, according to the expanded recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

On March 10 the Boerne, TX, company initially recalled only Nature’s Eats branded pistachios it produced and distributed to retailers in Texas and Louisiana after a random package collected at retail and tested as part of a routine government program showed Salmonella contamination.

Lidl is recalling its own brand tinned herring fillets – because the packaging doesn't warn shoppers it may contain fish.

The German discount supermarket sells herring in various sauces in 200g tins under the brand Nixe, but despite having a prominent Marine Stewardship Council logo, the discounter said the herring fillets in a tomato sauce have been withdrawn due to fish not being declared in English.

Its herring fillets in a tomato and red and green pepper sauce, herring fillets in a mustard sauce and herring fillets in a tomato and pepper sauce also fail to mention they may contain fish, milk, egg, wheat and mustard.

Takata Corp., the embattled maker of air bags linked to deadly malfunctions, is facing a major expansion of what is already the largest auto recall in U.S. history, a move that could cover 35 million to 40 million additional inflators, according to people briefed on the matter.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has scheduled a 1 p.m. announcement Wednesday to reveal the expanded recall, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the details aren't public. The action will include all units that don't have a desiccant, said one of the people familiar with the matter.

Takata raised provisions for the recall earlier this week. The auto parts supplier will book a combined 20.1 billion yen ($188 million) in charges, 16.6 billion of which was decided after reviewing air-bag recall costs, according to a statement on Monday. The remaining 3.5 billion yen charge is related to settlements with consumers injured by the devices.

Munchkin is recalling about 180,000 of its LatchTM lightweight pacifiers because they pose a choking hazard.

The company determined that a little plastic cover that goes over the pacifier's clip can detach.

The Van Nuys, California, company says it has received five reports each from Canada and the United States of the clip detaching. No injuries have been reported.

The pacifiers were sold for about $11 to $15 at Babies"R"Us, Target, Walmart and other locations. They were also sold online at sites such as amazon.com, the Consumer Protection Safety Commission said.

Several styles and color patterns are part of the recall -- details of which are available on the commission's recall page.

The commission recommends parents take the clip away from young children and contact Munchkin for a replacement or a refund at 877-242-3134 or munchkin.com.

Documents detailing recalls by Honda, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Ferrari and Mitsubishi were posted Friday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

They're part of a massive expansion of Takata air bag recalls announced earlier this month. Seventeen automakers are adding 35 million to 40 million inflators to what already was the largest auto recall in U.S. history.

In addition, the Japanese transport ministry on Friday announced 7 million additional recalls related to the Takata inflators. Those recalls cover all front air bags that do not have a chemical drying agent.

The recalls are among the first to be unveiled by automakers since Takata agreed to the recall expansion, and more recalls will be announced in the coming week. The recalls are being phased in by the government due to a lack of available replacement parts. Models that are from 2011 or older in high heat and humidity areas will get first priority, followed by 2008 and older models in Southern-tier states, then 2004 and older models in the rest of the country.

Research has shown that it takes at least six years for the ammonium nitrate to deteriorate. That's the reason older models are getting priority.

Honda had the biggest recall total on Friday with more than 4.5 million inflators, while Fiat Chrysler reported 4.3 million. The Honda total includes about 2,700 Gold Wing motorcycles with optional front air bags.

Honda says the latest recall covers about 2.2 million additional Honda and Acura vehicles. The other 2.3 million vehicles were recalled previously for other Takata air bag problems. Honda expects the recalls to start in late summer for automobiles and in late fall for the motorcycles.

General Mills Inc. is voluntarily recalling an estimated 10 million pounds (4.5 million kilograms) of flour over E. coli concerns after customers who used the baking staple reported getting sick during the last five months.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that approximately half of the 38 people who were infected with a specific strain of E. coli had reported making something with flour before getting sick, General Mills said in a statement Tuesday. The company added that “some of the ill consumers may have also consumed raw dough or batter.” The outbreak, which began in December, has spanned 20 states.

Hostess Brands says it is voluntarily recalling various snack cakes and doughnuts over concerns they may have come in contact with peanut residue not included in the ingredient list.

The Kansas City, Missouri-based company’s recall announced Friday covers more than 700,000 cases of Ding Dongs, Zingers, Chocodiles and various doughnuts sold in grocery, dollar, drug and convenience stores in the U.S. and Mexico.

Frito-Lay on Tuesday issued a voluntary recall of select Rold Gold pretzels due to potential peanut contamination.

Rold Gold Tiny Twists, Rold Gold Thins, Rold Gold Sticks and Rold Gold Honey Wheat Braided pretzels are subject to the recall. The company’s flour supplier recently issued a recall declaring undeclared peanut residue in its product, which spurred Frito-Lay’s action to take possibly contaminated products off the market and alert consumers.

The company has not received any reports of illness associated with the potential presence of peanuts, and no other Frito-Lay products are impacted.

Nature Made vitamin users need to be aware of a new recall resulting from possible Salmonella or Staphylococcus aureus contamination.

Pharmavite, which makes Nature Made vitamins, said it is voluntarily recalling the following products out of an abundance of caution:

Kellogg announced Tuesday it is recalling several varieties of snacks and cookies sold under brand names Keebler, Famous Amous, Special K, Mother’s, and Murray, because the products may contain undeclared peanut residue.

Kellogg initiated the recall after its supplier, Grain Craft, recalled wheat flour that has the potential to contain low levels of peanut residue.

Federal safety officials are issuing an urgent new warning after tests found some of the Takata airbags may be even more prone to deadly malfunctions than previously known.

Brand new data has federal officials desperately trying to reach owners of older cars.

"With this new data, we know how bad it could really be. Literally flipping a coin in a crash, you don't know if you could end up having the shrapnel coming at you," said Mark Rosekind, PhD and NHTSA administrator.

The higher-risk inflators are in certain 2001-2003 Honda and Acura vehicles:

IKEA recalls 36 million chests and dressers after six deaths

A German food watchdog has called for Kinder chocolate bars, as well as other foods, to be recalled after tests found they contain dangerous levels of what have been described as "likely carcinogens".

Foodwatch said that mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAHs), which are created when oil is refined, have been found in the products.

The watchdog tested 20 different products and found three with what it said were “dangerous” levels of the oil byproduct.

Foodwatch has since asked that Ferrero’s Kinder Riegel chocolate bar, Lindt’s Fioretto Nougat Minis and one other German product be taken off sale.

In a statement on their website, the watchdog said: “Foodwatch had the the producers concerned informed in advance about the test results and called for a public recall.

“They refused, however, to remove products from sale.

The European Food Safety authority describes MOAHs as "likely carcinogenic and mutagenic".

That E. coli O157:H7 illness cluster in New Hampshire, which has grown to 14 cases, is now connected to a recall of about 8,000 pounds of raw beef products by PT Farm LLC in North Haverhill, NH.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the recalled products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The raw, intact and non-intact beef product items including ground beef, ground beef patties and other sub-primal cuts, were produced between June 6 and June 16. The following products are subject to recall:

• Various weights and various sizes of raw intact and raw non-intact “Chestnut Farms” beef products packed in cardboard boxes.
• Various weights and various sizes of raw intact and raw non-intact “PT Farm” beef products packed in cardboard boxes.
• Various weights and various sizes of raw intact and raw non-intact “Miles Smith Farm” beef products packed in cardboard boxes.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “M8868” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations and for institutional use in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Lorex voluntarily recalled 26,000 Care 'N' Share baby monitors sold in the United States and 8,000 sold in Canada, due to safety concerns stemming from a faulty battery.

To date, there have been 488 cases of the monitor's blue lithium ion batteries overheating and swelling, and for 140 of those cases, the battery's plastic casing came off as a result. Luckily, there haven't been any reported injuries.

General Mills reminds its customers that flour is made from wheat grown outside, where it can be exposed to certain kinds of bacteria. The cooking process can help kill bacteria, so you shouldn’t eat anything that contains raw flour.

This is the second time that the company is expanding the recall since it was initiated in May. Earlier this month General Mills announced that it was recalling three flavors of Betty Crocker cake mix that were made with Wondra flour that had been named in the original recall.

The South Korean electronics giant on Friday said that because of a problem with the Galaxy Note 7 battery it would halt sales of the new device around the world. It's also recalling and replacing those phones already sold.

In recent days, South Korean social media had seen a spate of people posting images of charred Galaxy Note 7 devices, claiming they'd overheated or exploded.

One death has been linked to a massive recall announced Friday for General Motors Co. vehicles with faulty air-bag software.

GM said it is recalling 3.64 million 2014-17 model-year vehicles in the U.S. for a software issue that may prevent front air bags from deploying. The global recall includes nearly 4.3 million vehicles. The automaker said it is aware of one fatality and three injuries related to the safety defect.

The recall covers certain models of the 2014-2016 Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet SS and Spark EV; 2014-17 Chevrolet Corvette, Trax, Caprice PPV and Silverado 1500; 2014-17 Buick Encore; 2014-17 GMC Sierra 1500; 2015-17 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and Silverado HD; 2015-17 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra HD; and 2015-17 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

The company said the sensing and diagnostic module, which controls air bag and seat belt pretensioner deployment, has a software defect that could prevent deployment of front air bags and pretensioners “in certain rare circumstances when a crash is preceded by a specific event impacting vehicle dynamics.”

The carmaker told NHTSA that on May 17, a Speak Up for Safety report — a new safety procedure it implemented following its deadly ignition switch crisis — was filed relating to a crash of a 2014 Silverado truck in which the driver’s front air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner were alleged not to have deployed. The company opened an investigation in early June.

The sensing and diagnostic module, which controls the air bag and pretensioner, is supplied by Delphi Automotive.

The automaker in July and August worked with Delphi to investigate incidents involving similar vehicles and with similar allegations of non-deployment, including legal claims. GM also conducted road testing at its Milford Proving Ground in August; on Aug. 31, GM’s Safety and Field Action Decision Authority opted to launch a recall.

Kellogg Co. has issued a 25-state-wide voluntary recall of about 10,000 cases of Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles, because they might be infected with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

According to a press release issued by Kellogg, "The recall is a result of routine tests that the company conducts which identified the potential for contamination. As soon as the company learned of a potential concern, it moved quickly to identify any foods that might be impacted and resolve the issue."

Tyson Foods Inc. has recalled about 132,520 pounds of chicken nugget products sold at Costco that may be contaminated with hard plastic.

According to Tyson, the plastic material ranged in size from 21mm in length and 6.5mm in diameter and may have come from a round, hard plastic rod used to connect a plastic transfer belt. Tyson said the products pass through a metal detector but the plastic is not detectable to the technology.

The fully cooked Panko Chicken Nuggets items were produced on July 18, 2016. The following products are subject to recall:
