One more milestone down. She took her first steps last night. She has been holding onto stuff and crab walking a lot and occasionally standing on her own. Last night she stood up took 2 steps without holding on to anything and in the process of the 3rd leaned forward to catch the couch so she could hold on to it.

She now also likes to sit on stuff. She actually shoves our roommate's computer and sits on the shelf it is on. She also knocks stuff down to make it an appropriate height as well:

She has also been helping to "clean" our cabinets. In particular she likes under the oven:

Well I haven't updated this in months so I guess I ought to do that before I hit you guys up.

Right now Karleigh is in the hospital from a mystery fever. They first thought it was a UTI, but nothing is growing from any of the cultures. The think it is just a virus and are keeping her until her fever is gone just as a precausion. She also is having issues with her feeding peg, it looks like the hole for it has gotten larger and it will need to be replaced with a bigger one so the feeds don't leak out the gap. You can tell she doesn't feel good, but overall she is doing well. As is evidenced below.
Now time for the cute:
She loves her some dipping dots.
She was insistent on getting onto her toy box her grandfather made her. The tiny red wagon was used as a latter.
They weren't kidding when they said "if it fit it ships" on those flat rate boxes.
I don't know why but she has taken to putting herself in that drawer.

Now for the hitting you guys up for money part. We are doing the area heart walk this year and if any of you are willing and able to donate in Team Karleigh's name it would be appreciated. Krista and I have been blessed with support from friends and family, you guys especially have helped me by being there with encouraging words and even money. There is no way we could ever pay back all of the good fortune I have received so we want to pay it forward in any way we can. I know times are tough for a lot of us so please don't feel obligated.

I know we are screwed on trees. She will climb anything. She has a chair that sits next to our recliner and will climb in it to climb over the arm of the recliner or go the other way and over the arm of the couch. Even if she has nothing to stand on she will climb up things by sheer grip strength and bending to get a leg up.

Awakening this thread from the deep like Cthullu will awaken one day. This thread is less likely cause you to go mad and will most likely leave your soul more or less intact.

On a more serious note, Arcanis, his wife of 2 days (former fiance as it usually goes) and more importantly Karleigh need your prayers, well wishes or positive energy (whichever camp you belong to). She was admitted into the hospital yet again today because she has a fever and a low and possibly falling platelet count (which can mean more sever issue).

Arcanis: "Fever is likely from a bacteria infection. Low platelet is probably from the aspirin, but could be another issue thus the monitoring"

So please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. When Arcanis has time I will get him to post pictures of her at the wedding as a thank you.

Re: Karleigh's update thread [Arcanis' Baby]

Postby Arcanis » Mon Mar 19, 2012 10:33 pm

Well I'm home from the hospital as mom is the one staying the night with her tonight. Here is the rundown: She was running fever last night, 99.x degrees, and sleeping more than normal. We would normally treat her fever and wait until today to see if it persisted, as it was still a low grade fever, but she was exposed to her cousin who had a throat infection last week at the wedding so to be safe we went to the ER last night. ER ran strep, rsv, and flu test;chest x-ray and echo just as a CYA for the doctor on duty (she was pretty young and knew Karleigh was a heart baby so I figured she didn't want to risk it if she was wrong about it not being heart related). Got nothing and sent us home saying it was likely a virus. This morning when we get up she is burning up, I think it was almost 102, so the little woman and karleigh go to the ER again with my mom (they were supposed to run a lot of post wedding errands with her today anyway). I go off to work figuring more of the same as last night.
This morning's ER visit nets a series of blood tests and urinalysis. High white count and fever lead them to believe it is bacterial (bacterial infections are pretty bad as they can easily spread to the heart), they gave her Roserphrin (probably spelled wrong but a broad spectrum antibiotic). She also has a low platelet count (74.8 for those who actually know what that means). She gets sent off and told to check in with the pediatrician tomorrow. Little woman calls and they bump Wednesday's appointment to today instead. They have begun eating lunch by the time the pediatrician calls her back to schedule for today, so I get a call at work to meet them at the restaurant and head to the peds office. We get there and go through the normal routine, except the low platelet count has him worried it could be ITP as he has seen another case recently. He calls her cardiologist and consults with him while in the room with us. They agree to have her admitted to monitor the platelet count and get the fever under control, mostly the platelets according to them.

Now the little one is getting IV antibiotics to make sure they clear up the cause of the fever, though it looks like it was improving before they ever got the IV in (that took several tries over an hour and then a break of a few hours followed by another try to succeed) They just got blood for the first time since this morning right before I left about 9pm. Hopefully the platelet count is on its way up and not down. And that is where it stands for now. So it seems like the perfect capstone to this comedy of errors that this weekend has been. I'll start a new thread for that though.

Thank you for finding the time and energy to fill us in :)

I'm 40 and still have to get into a meditative state when it's time to have blood drawn or the like. Nothing like a complete stranger giving you advice (kind of like waiting in a grocery line and that person just can't seem to hold back their opinion, ha) remember that you and your wife (congratulations!) may ask for the best needle nurse on the floor to work with your daughter. Meant with LOVE and lots of compassion. I know what it's like to have a loved one in the hospital and how challenging it can be to not go all Shirley Maclaine on the staff. Best wishes to you and yours with the best nurses and doctors giving the best care to Karleigh.

We know she is a hard stick and the nurses there really are good. Most of the time they don't do a bad job but the vein blows when they go to flush it. Only once has the nurse ever been able to get it on the first try, and she was the best needle nurse in her surgical hospital and she was surprised. It doesn't help that Karleigh is too smart some times and starts yelling at them when there are 2 or more nurses in her room at the same time.

Thank you for the reply and thank you for understanding my tone :) Sure that you all have tried so many things and heard so many suggestions, that I appreciate the time.

Because of my volunteering at the local hospital, I'm learning of all the programs and opportunities that are available to patients. The trick is the patient or family member needs to ask (most of the time). (written with compassion) I didn't doubt that you wouldn't give or have the best care for your girl, it's that sometimes the suggestion might trigger another idea or prompt another question you or your wife may have down the road :) Know it's been a long, long road and sure you are very tired especially after this weekend. Peace to you and yours.

As always thanks for the well wishes guys. According to the wife the doctor told her that there was no way the initial blood test platelet count was right, it went back to normal faster than should have been possible. So the whole thing ended up being a fire drill of sorts, but at least she was there for the infection getting treated for that as well.
