Re: Theo.

Spoiler:
No, my experience with the Avengers begins and ends with the movie. It's entirely possible that there's nuances going over my head. The movie shouldn't depend on having read the comics/seen the cartoons, though.

Also, I did enjoy the movie quite a lot. I was picking nits, not trashing the film.

[Movie] The Avengers are rockin'

Postby JSHAW » Sun May 06, 2012 10:18 pm

I liked The Avengers a lot, but I AM expecting 2 better movies that for me WILL top The Avengers,
The Amazing Spiderman & The Dark Knight Rises. Dark Knight takes the trophy for best out
of all 3.

Prometheus for me is THE movie of the summer.

These 4 movies, WOW!

I can't remember a better summer movie lineup.

It doesn't really depend on it. It was more paying homage to the original cartoon and comics.

OK. On its own, the change in demeanor of the characters doesn't make a lot of sense.

Spiderman is going to be terrible just like the last one. Dark Knight Rises is going to be so serious as to be tiresome. We get it Nolan Dark Knight was a masterpiece and you're brooding. Also, Prometheus shouldn't even be considered a summer movie. It should be elevated transcendent of regular cinema fare (man I'm going to feel stupid if it sucks)

About a couple of the things you mentioned:

Spoiler:
I figured Loki's aim was to turn Stark to his side. I think Stark knew this, and maybe was even counting on it to pull off HIS move. Imagine Iron Man fighting for Loki, no wonder Loki thought it was worth doing.

I think Iron Man and Thor pretty much had enough of fighting each other at that point. I don't think it was the speech per se, it was more that was their face saving chance to chill out and not be the one to back down from the other.

Spidey... I dunno. It's kinda interesting they tried to rewrite Spidey's origins YET AGAIN, and this time decided to throw in Umbrella Corporation  (well, sorta).

Dark Knight Rises... yeah, there's some serious brooding in that movie. :o

I think its going to take terrible to a new plateau and we will be saying how spiderman 3 was a masterpiece compared to it.

That goes against the conventional geek wisdom. Footage of the new Spidey film has been received very positively from fans at Comic-Con, etc. as far as I've read. I don't expect it to be all kinds of awesome, but I don't expect it to be completely terrible either.

The Prometheus trailer was almost worth paying the admission price alone. Insane. It felt like an apology from Ridley Scott for years of crappy Alien sequels.

This should just be the spoiler thread at this point. No point in talking about the movie if you can't talk about the movie!

We didn't get Prometheus, only Brave and Spidey. Of course it was an afternoon showing and the tickets were only $6.00 and no lines!

I loved the witty banter and the comedic moments, but the plot was just so-so and the action was awfully repetitive. I mean, how many minutes were spent with two pretty much indestructible beings beating on each other? There's no drama there, since neither can actually hurt the other an any serious way. Without Kryptonite, Superman is not very interesting.

Spoiler:
Finally, the ending was stupid. I thought the point of Fury developing super weapons was because we had no hope of defending ourselves without them. And what actually ended up destroying the invasion fleet? Ahh yes.. .a technology we've possessed since the 1940s. Heck.. we didn't even really need the super heroes. That fighter jet could have just shot the missile through the worm hole in the first place.

3/5 stars, mostly for the little gems. The last action movie I saw in the theater was Inception. This wasn't even close to as good. No depth.

My response to that is:

Spoiler:
He was right - we could not have protected ourselves on Earth without having super weapons. The nuke would have killed millions of civilians and made Manhattan a smoking radioactive hole, which is why he was so keen to avoid using it.

Nobody on Earth knew where the Alien mothership was in relation to the worm hole - blindly shooting a nuke through it wouldn't have accomplished anything. If it had been that easy, Iron Man could have just thrown it through the portal without risking his life. Really, the nuke was just a parting shot - the alien invasion would have already been defeated by the closing of the portal and the securing of the tesseract cube. Without the cube they would have no way of reopening the portal.

Went on Saturday with my wife and 2 boys. Everyone loved it. The beginning was a little slow for our 7 year old but he thought the movie was awesome at the end. It was a fantastic movie overall.

I did not read this thread before and reading about KCs spoilers makes me very happy that I did not. It's one thing to post them. It's quite another to argue with people for a full page about them.

For what it's worth, I get PLW's point, and it was a negative for me as well. The film wasn't very deep in terms of plot or character. To be fair, I think it would have been almost impossible to make it so given the large cast, and probably counter-productive to what comic geeks really wanted to see (heroes blowing stuff up).

Of course, I went into this expecting a summer popcorn film, so that's exactly what I got. If you walk into every film expecting Inception, you're going to be one of the most disappointed film-goers on the planet.

And you know this how? To be honest, I wasn't a fan of a Spiderman reboot and wasn't excited at all about this. But the trailers look pretty awesome and I'm willing to give the movie a chance. Given that none of us have actually seen the movie, I'm not sure how you can make the statement above.

I think the major problem is that I went in as a Joss Whedon fan, instead of as a comic book fan. I was hoping he would do for comic book movies what he did for vampires and space cowboys. He didn't.

Let me put it another way. It didn't have the depth of Dark Knight, either.

In defense of the Avengers, I thinks youre supposed to get your character development from the various solo movies. As mentioned its pretty hard to keep a movie at a reasonable length, if you have to provide depth of character for a cast this large.
That being said, Inception is one of my favorite movies because it did so well blending deep concepts with action. The Avengers is a completely different animal.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

I've never even heard of roseanne, I'll look it up.

Apparently you meant roseanne barr's TV show, which obviously I have heard of and seen some of. It looks like Joss was an story editor on 18 episodes of them... not sure what you're saying. Are those 18 episodes special in some way?

I'm disappointed because I thought this would be worth seeing in the theater but little things revealed here tell me that I would have been wrong and I can find better things to do with 4 hours.

I agree with MHS about rewatching Avengers. I could have went right back into the movie and would have been happy to do so.

I didn't realize Inception was an action movie. I thought it was a fine movie but not an action movie. I don't consider Avengers and Inception comparable movies in any. They are completely different types of movies with very different intentions. Both are entertaining but not in the same manner. If you want to compare, though, Avengers made a shit-ton more money on opening weekend and will continue to do so.

Like Jag said, we're not here on these forums to waste time like watching movies usually is. We're here to learn. I'm waiting for anyone to educate us on Joss.

This may not be the right thread though, does he have his own? I'll go look, maybe he needs one?

I don't feel this way at all. It isn't that I could have gone right back and watched it a second time. It's that every day that goes by where I do not see The Avengers feels like a wasted day. I desperately wish I were watching it right this second.

I was surprised I couldn't rent Thor or Captain America from Amazon streaming, but thankfully my library has 10 copies of each. I don't feel right going to see this until watching the other two, particularly because the wife really enjoyed Iron Man. Hopefully we can get out to see The Avengers before they pull it from the theaters. ;)
