Watching "How to Cook That" channel on Youtube... NOT for cooking. The host is too busy doing debunking videos from Five Minute Crafts, Blossom, and So Yummy, and so on who publishes a ton of basically... FAKE content. In other words, their DIY, like "in carton milk cake" or "no crack cheese cake with a slow cooker" or so-called life-hacks like "use Sprite to pep up your wilting flowers". They don't work, they can't work, and their videos are FAKED with closeups (with stuff happening off-screen), quick cuts, and outright mismatches (sizes of shoes supposedly cleaned by shaving cream changed from a 39 to a 40).

Apparently, the fake DIY websites only do it to get Youtube views, and they may be backed by unknown Russians who are sprinkling the content with pro Putin propaganda?! Weird...

telcta wrote: Wed Jul 08, 2020 9:49 pm After reading some of the comments, there’s a 1984 movie from the BBC called Threads that’s suppose to be just as bleak that I never heard of. I found it on Amazon Prime and will start it tonight.
THREADS is even more disturbing than THE DAY AFTER because it focuses on the limits of civil defense and of civilization itself.

THE DAY AFTER is (almost) a natural-disaster movie. THREADS is a *political*-disaster movie like the recent CHERNOBYL miniseries.

Despite the limits of 1980s special effects, it is almost unbearable. No horror movie comes close.
Honestly, don't try to watch THREADS unless you're *very* ready. It's truly, truly disturbing, even now.
I finished it last night. I had to break it up into two nights, that was very rough. It had an even more raw feel like I was watching a documentary.
Spoiler:
Threads had absolutely no glimmer of hope at the end. Spanning 13 years after the attack and the way it ended suddenly. Sheesh. It does make The Day After seem tame in comparison.

i remember just the trailer for this freaking me out, at the time.

One of the great gifts my parents gave me was the appreciation of nature and the ability to pause life and look around to reflect on the big picture. I remember being with dad up in the hills and learning the magic of packing snacks, water and heading off to find a comfy spot in the mountains to sit and reflect on the beauty all around us.

We would close our eyes sitting on a sun-bathed boulder and learn to envision the landscape and all it's contours, crevices and critters in our mind's eye and delight in the simple pureness of it all. Bird songs provided the choir for our little spiritual place of respite in the woods, and we received communion and wonderment at eating an orange thousands of miles away from its origin. How come they never taste so good at home? I remember dad mentioning before he went into business that he fancyied himself as a bit of a Thoreau as a young man, and I think parts of my modern-day thoughtful 80+ dad have a bit of Henry David residing in him to this day.

On that note, this this short video about a successful conservation restoration project at a ranch in TX is like cocaine in my veins in a time I need hope, and it nicely encapsulates the sorts of conservation ethics my dad instilled in me growing up:

Im curious how they transport them them or move from transport to rail. And what happens if they derail or fall over. Cant just lift them due to heat and weight .

1982 CBS News special report titled "The Mall" with Charles Kuralt.

This one is really great if you like looks back in time. This one is 50 minutes long and I watched it all. So fascinating. I was 13 at the time so just a little younger than the two girls they talked to in this. This time was special. Its Oak Park Mall in Kansas. Ah man it took me back. Its a docu about the mall itself mainly but also shows the surrounding stuff to it and how the 'mall' has changed American life.

/casual comment ...

Not being critical of you, but just the title of this video irks me.

Being hit at 500 mph, —by what— ??!

I realize that watching the video would reveal the answer, but the title make it seem like the question itself has merit, when (as a scientist) what the thing hitting it at 500mph is essential.

Or I should watch the damn video.
Because it would be cool if they are just showing what happens to the skin of the golf ball by the atmosphere as it flies at 500 mph.
Then everything I said above is pointless.

A pea? A cannonball? A car? A bullet? A golf club head launched out of an accelerator ?

I’m being silly. But , the question seemed to be missing the key element.

Edit:
Watched it.

Great video.
Basically. How hard can we hit this golf ball. And what happens to it. Or really. Let’s just force the ball itself to hit things at ludicrous speeds.

I could just delete this lunatic post of mine, but I’ll just let it ride.
