I know the argument is partially tongue-in-cheek but it also reminds me of how you'll see people on Sunday or Monday and they'll talk about how "we" and "you" did over the weekend, referring to some sports team. "We" and "you" didn't do jack squat.

Being born and raised in Ohio and living all over the state I can say without a doubt that this meme is 100% accurate. The God Father meets the Wire one is especially insightful for Youngstown. Their current prosecutor was shot several times in his home when he went after gangsters, he's still alive and they're in prison.

Within The Judge, the comic is then credited to a different magazine - the Wisconsin Octopus, published at the University of Wisconsin between 1919 and 1959.

While we can't say with certainty that this is the first meme by that definition, we can say that because it was copied and spread with variations this cartoon was genuinely part of a pre-internet 'Expectations vs. Reality' meme.

Clearly the writers of the Wisconsin Octopus magazine were ahead of their time.

In high school I took the easiest PE class I could because I was as far from athletic as you could get. It was called "Lifetime Sports" and was easy stuff like badminton, bowling, etc.

The coach knew we were all a bunch of nerds so he would just let us do whatever during class. So I took to playing "extreme" ping pong like in that video above where you were sometimes 10-15 feet from the table just slamming it back and forth.

Somehow this was the one sport I was REALLY damn good at, and I started taking down everybody who played me. I finally worked my way up to battling the reigning champ, who was this guy that had a full mustache in 11th grade. I swear I think this guy was in his early 20s. At any rate, we had an epic match that ended in an insane back and forth volley, and I won. It was my one brief moment of fame in a high school career that was essentially four years of me being a miserable bullied outcast.

The only high school class I didn't hate - and did well at - was my school's outdoor sports class (Nevada, '87 or '88.) Over the semester it covered outdoor safety, survival, hunting safety & laws, firearms safety and laws, shooting, and archery. Oh, and some golf as a 'filler.' It included regular rifle range time (my school had its own rifle range.) The main draw was that it met the state requirements for hunter's education in order to get a hunting permit.

I can't imagine seeing that class - or a rifle range - at a high school today.

/edit - I take that back. Some quick research shows that they still have the range.
