Uh... yeah.
You're only saying that because you get uncomfortable every time I fondle your knee just because I drew into straight to fill in the middle I was chasing on the last card.

You mean you had a gut-shot straight draw and hit it on the river? Yeah, that pisses me off.

If there's any chance of a flush, I don't ever play for a straight draw. And flushes tend to end up at the river.

I know it's to conceal any "tells", but trust me, if you're a good player, none of that shit matters.
Chess vs. cards: the difference is full vs. hidden information. Do backgammon players have tells? (They could, but they'd only really be apparent at skill levels so low that folks are prone to missing important information which is available to them.)
Toe wrote: Tue Jan 23, 2018 10:14 am I would think a good [card] player uses everything at their disposal to win (or, more specifically, know when someone is bluffing).
Yes, of course!
Toe wrote: Tue Jan 23, 2018 10:14 amHow is mitigating a possible tell have zero impact?
Well... actually... that's a super interesting concept. What does it mean to be a good card player? How good is this player? How good is their opponent? Let me break this down into a matrix of possibilities. I'll use subjective descriptors of players' abilities which should become explained in the process of laying out the matrix (and the paragraph which follows).
  • Polly is you as the protagonist, Ollie is the opponent. The game is being played short-term (skill level differential would overcome with or without tells in the long run):
  • Polly is terribad, Ollie is terribad: Hiding your own tells is unimportant (Ollie can't pick up on them). Reading tells is unimportant (Ollie doesn't know how far ahead or behind he is in the hand.
  • Polly is terribad, Ollie is mediocre: Hiding your own tells is important. Reading tells is unimportant (you don't know, he can't figure you out).
  • Polly is terribad, Ollie is good: Hiding your own tells is important. Reading tells is important (Ollie playing exploitative strategy.)
  • Polly is mediocre, Ollie is terribad: Hiding important, reading not important.
  • Polly is mediocre, Ollie is mediocre: Hiding and reading tells is important.
  • Polly is mediocre, Ollie is good: Hiding and reading tells is important.
  • Polly is good, Ollie is terribad: Hiding important, reading unimportant.
  • Polly is good, Ollie is mediocre: Hiding and reading important.
  • Polly is good, Ollie is good: Hiding and reading is unimportant.
The last one may seem a surprise. However, when two titans of cardplay clash, the optimal strategies are to play an unexploitative, "game theory optimal" manner. At this point you're only interested in any open information (for instance board cards on flop games like hold 'em). Both players are taking GTO ranges which do not deviate based on perceived flaws in their opponent's strategy. Since the hidden cards (in your hand or your opponent's hand) don't matter, there's no reason to even bother to look for tells. Your strategy is structured to win you money only when your opponent deviates from GTO strategies themselves. (Note: two good players don't tend to sit and play each other alone, as whomever gets the better lucky draws of cards is going to win.)
Also, I would think that good players know they have a tell and know what they need to do to not display it. I thought some are so subtle and subconscious that the best option is to go the hoodie/sunglasses rout. Especially in fatigue situations where you might not be as diligent policing yourself as you would otherwise.
Depending on where you and your opponent are in the "mediocre" world (from my descriptions above) it can be much more important to have "tells defense" (i.e., not giving them off) rather than observation skills.
LordMortis wrote: Thu Jan 25, 2018 1:46 pm I would think if tells were that important, you would practice a series of false narratives or red herrings to throw people off.
That's a different version of tells defense. Depending on your acting ability (and your ability to select frequencies, and your opponent's observation skills, and...) that may or may not be viable. Putting tells on lockdown is generally the better choice if you're playing long-term. But short term/hit-and-run situations? Acting like a dumbass and giving off traditional dumbass (but reversed) tells can be very lucrative.

MHS and I were in a Saturday night basically locals-only game at Binions (on Fremont Street) and I had a huge score on one hand. I was late to act and had observed that the player to my right was fairly observant (and very proud of his poker skills). I pretended like I was going to pitch my hand in the muck, but when action was only a single raise to me (multiway pots pretty common that night), I called along, closing the action. (Fortunate event #1, but not too out of character.) The flop came down fairly innocuous without the possibility of many draws (Fortunate event #2). It was checked through to the player to my right who put in a big bet. At that point I raised (and he gave a very visceral response). Other players folded back to him and he pondered for a moment, said "I only bet because I read you as weak, pre" and folded. I never showed him my pocket aces, but just nodded and collected the sizable pot.

Aren't you fairly rural Canadian? How is that possible?

We had barn and indoor/outdoor cats everywhere growing up so seeing them in the snow was ubiquitous. You couldn't take two steps without stepping on a cat in my neighor's yard. Oi! We'd have to put out scalding water in the winter so it would stay unfrozen long enough for barn cats to make their way out to get something fresh to drink, assuming they weren't just eating snow...

Ottawa isn't exactly rural (although we do have a small farm smack in the middle of the city).

My boys go out daily in all kinds of weather. They are not fond of snow, especially before I clear the paths. Gus will hunker down somewhere for an hour or two, but Beery usually packs it in after 10 minutes.

Suburban. And it's illegal to let cats run free here. i.e. No legal outdoor cats (except maybe on a leash?).
