Around here, turn signals are also informational. Many turn and turn-only lanes are only marked as such with arrows painted on the pavement. They were last painted in ~1954 so they're only visible from ten feet away, and are only good for the first three cars, after which the arrows are covered. Turn signals are how you figure out where to turn.

Leave it to Americans to avoid paying for infrastructure signage and just hope that citizens communicate to each other where they are allowed to turn, otherwise, who knows where to turn?! If there's one thing that can be counted on, it's that drivers care about other drivers.

Small rural towns don't have money for infrastructure. This town was built on three things: a major highway (US 41), railroad, and coal. Guess how many of those are left?

We have broken sidewalks, roads with holes all the way down to the old bricks, and last time a stoplight got hit, it was replaced with a stop sign tied to a barrel for ~3 years. When it rains, you can't see any of the street markings, center lines included. Street lights are hit-or-miss, and we won't even go into the potholes. While there is some financial corruption and misuse (where isn't there), the city basically has to choose between maintaining the roads or having working sewers and a fire department.

So who's left that doesn't know where the left hand turn lanes are?

That aside, my only point is that relying on other drivers is a sure way to be let down. Relying on other drivers to tell you where to go is a pretty specious argument for turn signals.

Down here in America things are tight. We don't have a mountain of maple syrup money to throw around on painting roads and such frivolous infrastructure work.

It's more that we have red states and blue states. Red states have low taxes, and this is why they can't have nice things.

Corruption and inefficiencies prevent high-tax blue states from buying as many nice things as one might expect, but we generally have better infrastructure and services and the stronger economies that those support. Street lights work. Roads get painted. We even have street sweepers.

I guess the worse I can say about our infrastructure is that when the city limits moves ahead it takes them years and years to actually build sidewalks in the new city limits.

Then there is NJ. We have the worst of both worlds. A traditionally blue state with high taxes and yet we elect SUPER RED governors who give tax breaks to corporations left and right but won't spend a single dime on infrastructure unless it falls over and damages a golf course. NJ sucks so bad.

I wasn't actually suggesting that people intentionally rely on drivers in this manner. It was more tongue-in-cheek. The truth is that when you're in a small town, you just guess half of the time. Occasionally someone with a turn signal can simply give you a hint. It isn't like most roads have a ton of traffic.

It took a sharp left into the Twilight Zone. Without using the turn signal.

I guess we'll just ignore anything before 1979.
The first national broadcast of Misterogers' Neighborhood appeared on most NET stations on February 19, 1968. In 1970, when PBS replaced NET, it also inherited this program. Around the same time the show had a slight title change, to the more-familiar Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

The show was broadcast from February 19, 1968 to February 20, 1976, and again from August 27, 1979 to August 31, 2001.

I actually just heard a thing about the flooding issue in Houston. It has more to do with urban sprawl than anything else. The land was developed so quickly that the land around the city that would have taken on the water in the past is now concrete and asphalt, which cannot absorb water. Hence, roadways turning into waterways.

Not like out in Lubbock in west Texas, where it's part of the plan.
Michael Keenum is a city engineer who has studied where Lubbock's rainwater tends to pool. They do periodic updates on the map.
...
However, Keenum said that means many roads serve as a path of drainage.

"For the traveling public, that's difficult," he said, "but we would much rather have water in the roads than structures."
It's almost as if people are the problem.
