I had a toy with a map that looked like that when I was very young. For some reason I remember it with a magnet controlled fly which navigated the streets. That absolutely cannot be correct so now I'm trying to sort through memories of when I was like four years old and am totally failing.

Hah this is magnet toy I was thinking of

http://wesclark.com/am/tickle_bee.jpg

Which must have been in the same toybox as a map that looked like that.

Yeah, that's just a classic playmat for toy cars that has been around for 50 years. I had it, and I think every kindergarten everywhere today still has it.

It's clearly not the same art, but I think I always conflated it with Richard Scarry.

most people played that game incorrectly. You are supposed to wave the wand at the bee's butt, and the opposing magnetic force would cause it to jiggle down the path. Everyone I knew just had the magnet grab the bee by his nose and drag him through the maze. Where is the challenge in that?

I don't remember there being a game, as is evidenced by my confusing it with a playmat that I couldn't find online. I just remember I enjoyed dragging the insect around and around and around. I have an intuitive love for physics. I just don't have the brain power to power of mathmatics to pursue a life long observational love.

The 50s seemed better at the time. Looking in retrospect tho no, I'm afraid not.
Much less to worry about tho. Just the A Bomb and commies.
The average family had a small b&w tv with few channels and crappy shows. No AC for most people.
Cars did not last to 100,000 miles, more like 50,000. Not much in the way of electronic gadgets and listening to the radio was still popular.
And let's not get into politics and race and absolutely no PCness anywhere.
Altho................haircuts were less than a dollar and large candy bars were a nickle.

Stop selling salmonellaide and the health inspector won't bother you so much.

Still, this is pure marketing. While it's true that some kids have been hassled by "the man" on occasion, it's hardly a problem of epic proportions. It's barely on the order of "a tuna fish sandwich that eats YOU? More at 11" scale of news.

I thought the point was that giraffes were not visible until 11 months.
