Look at the top ones. Upside down. Look at the lower left. Right side up. Now look back at the top ones and your mind will see them as right side up (they appear to have turned over.)

Thanks for the explanation. Maybe the problem is I always thought I was looking at the top of the plates. Perhaps I've seen this before at some point and they had already flipped then.

I think that, for me, part of the problem was that the image was too small (and my eyes ain't what they used to be). I can usually "flip" between for things like that, but this time I just couldn't make it happen.

If I look at the bowls on the bottom left for a second it goes to right side up, if I concentrate on the tray to the top left for a few second and will it I can reverse them, but looking at the bowls switches them all back. It's.... interesting. I should get more sleep.

perception is weird. I didn't believe the image was simply rotated based on how it looked so I reversed the rotation myself and... huh, it really is just a rotation. How the hell are the two so different!

It comes down to the position your brain assumes is the source of the light -- upper right or bottom left. You invert the tray depending on which way the shadows fall.

Look at the bowls on top and focus on them alone until you see them deep rather peaks. Focusing on the bowls will make the rest seem like they also have depth rather than height.
