I actually had one of those. My toddler daughter was running straight off some cement steps. Without thinking I instantly reached out (with my left hand!) and grabbed her by the ankle. Pure reflex.

I've had a couple of those that amazed my wife, although none as serious as some of those, and quite frankly I can't remember the specifics, only that they happened.

That car one crashing through the window? Holy shit. Dads lie awake at night afraid of something like that happening. Kudos to dad for the potentially life saving reaction. My balls literally shriveled up into raisins just watching that. I would buy that guy a beer if he was in front of me. He's a damn hero. The rest are heroes too, but a bump on the noggin from a fall is a slightly different scale than being crushed by 2000+ lbs of speeding metal, glass and plastic.

If we presume the context, it's mildly amusing. I mean, there is a meme picture that covers this nicely, but barring clever meme text, it's just not that funny. And I'm the final arbiter on what's funny, of course.

Well yeah, I alluded to exactly that. In a vacuum that pic contains little humor value as well. I mean, it's not "unfunny" exactly, it's just not funny. Now if you were to write something clever over it, we could talk. Of course 99% of the attempts to make this meme funny are also not funny.

If the sole purpose was to note that the idea existed in the before time, even with a nearly parallel picture, but with genders reversed, ok. Noted. I believe I'm well known for turning a critical eye on attempts at humour, and this is just one of those times. Whether you think that makes me an idiot or incredibly charming is neither here nor there.

Somewhat related, I think the modern pic could achieve the same effect without having the dude be so gross about it. We get it, you're attracted to another woman as you walk with your partner/date/sister/whatever. Maybe he should be rubbing his crotch to really make sure we understand what's going on.

Sure, but I'm not asking for subtle. I'm asking for less than cartoonish. Since I think it's clear that lecherousness can fall on a scale, I think this level is cartoonishly exaggerated. I'm not saying that people don't exist like the guy in the photo or worse, I just think it's far too easy a target, which reduces the humour value for me. He's practically a caricature of a gross, lecherous, slimeball. There is plenty of room to find humour in males being caught looking at females that doesn't paint them as slimeballs.

These are my impressions and observations. I'm not demanding that everything match my exacting but undefined requirements. I'm saying not matching those exacting but undefined requirements are going to result in a less than enthusiastic response.

Like I said, it's not the subject matter that's the issue, it's the delivery. (fart jokes, how do they work?).

It's not like I'm particularly emotionally invested in these observations. I like laughing. I love laughing. When things fall short (for me), I'm disappointed, but not outraged or saddened.

The truth is that these comments come from a place that spends a lot of time looking for funny. I think about funny a lot. Not in the "I need a good standup routine" way that a comedian might, but in a "why do I find this funny or not? What is the nature of funny?" sort of way.

That sounds far too serious and ivory tower-y. It's more like "I like this food, I don't like that food. Why?" It's less "everyone sucks for liking food I don't" and more "there's too much oregano". That some people like oregano is not an issue.

The truth is I was feeling defensive and self conscious. I was explaining what *I* liked about it, not explaining to you why you should find it funny.

I tend to like my humour racier/edgier (which are harder to pull off imo), but I can appreciate a good pun or word play or whatever. It helps in this case that my house is filled with crocs and that I loathe crocs.

If there's anyone who can sympathize with talking something to death analytically until you force your own self into a self-conscious and defensive posture, it's me.
