Asked why she waited until March 20 of this year to tell her story to law enforcement, the woman said, "This is the first time in my life that I'm not afraid of him ... he can't get to me."

Given his penchant to wander around with a pistol, can you blame her?

The testimony covers why (mostly fear), and apparently the judge ordered that her statements be released now. It's not like she went straight to the media. HuffPo has a longer piece but I've closed the tab.

I didn't rule out its veracity. I simply said that I was hesitant to immediately accept it as truth. You have to admit, not bringing it to anyone's attention until well after Zimmerman became a social pariah can easily be a case of jumping on the bandwagon for a (as RM9 calls it) payday.

Ok I give up. Too much crap has unfolded from not being truthful about funds and now this. Msduncan withdraws any defense from him. He's on his own.

I saw the headline but didn't read the article because I assumed it was a vulture looking for a payday. Although I would say that even if true it doesn't make it more or less likely that he committed 2nd degree murder. I guess I should read article.

“I don’t like Obama,” the woman claimed Zimmerman’s mother stated. “She said, 'because he is black and I am a racist.'”

Ummm...usually racists don't refer to themselves as racists. That's a rather odd thing for Zimmerman's mother to say.

I don't know. This whole thing sounds a bit contrived. Even after reading the Huffington Post piece. The woman spends more time discussing the Zimmerman family's racism than she does her assault.

My thoughts too. But the witness goes on to comment on how strange it was for his mother to say it. It *IS* a very odd thing to say, and she noted how odd it was.

Whether it's true or not I have no idea, but at least the witness recognizes the strangeness of the statement, true or not.

American racists don't refer to themselves as racists but Zimmerman's mother was from Peru.

it could well be true that a specific comment that would qualify as racist in the US might be considered quite normal in a person's native country. anecdotal, i know, but i've heard a few questionable-to-jawdropping statements regarding other people's nationality or race uttered by a former flatmate from Colombia and a Ukrainian ex-gf that they had thought were completely innoculous. America is not the most racist nation on earth.

Perhaps, the comment was meant to be sarcastic.

I don't believe they've invented sarcasm in Peru.

So the Peruvian travel brochures all use the phrase "Racist and proud of it since 1535!"?

I was surprised no one picked up this gem from yesterday -- expressing zero regret and indicating: "It was God's plan for me to kill Trayvon Martin"

Is that the same lawyer Sundusky had, sitting next to Zimmerman?

Don't confuse what she said with what the article reports. She may well have spent 3 hours talking about the assaults, and the reporter pulled whatever they wanted of that - there's NO indication of how much time she spent discussing any given topic.

It's not exactly zero regret. He does apologize. Then he says he'd do everything the same. So... I dunno how you measure regret. Is this a 1? 1 regret?

As for stating "it was God's plan" - that's just an assholish thing to say about someone's death.

I saw Matt Lauer's interview with Trayvon's family this morning on the Today show, and I was sort of astounded at how he seemed to take all of what Zimmerman's side has said as fact. He asked Trayvon's family (paraphrased): knowing what we know now, that he confronted Zimmerman, that there was a struggle for the gun, do you accept his apology?

I don't think we can say definitively that we know there was a struggle for the gun, or who confronted whom. I don't believe that's been settled. And to hear Lauer just accept those assertions as fact sort of took me aback.

He's pleading "I ain't in control of my circumstances, pity me" card.

In other words, "Yes, I did kill him, but circumstances conspired to put me into that situation" (i.e. "it ain't my fault).

I'm starting to like him a bit less.
