Firefly/Serenity, do I watch it?

Post by tjg_marantz »

Okay,I just PVRed Serenity and it got me thinking. Should I watch this series/movie or will I just get frustrated at the ending? Was it left as a cliff hanger, was the story pretty wrapped up when it got cancelled. I keep hearing you people talk about it but I've never seen a minute of it.

Do I go for it or do I save myself the annoyance?

If I watch it, what's the order? Firefly, then Serenity?

Watch it, its great. The movie picks up where the series left off and does give you some closure. The show is good sci fi but its heart is in the crew of the Serenity.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Yes, the TV show and then the movie. Just make sure you watch the TV episodes in their intended order, not the order in which they aired.

Serenity (2 hour pilot)
The Train Job
Bushwhacked
Shindig
Safe
Our Mrs. Reynolds
Jaynestown
Out of Gas
Ariel
War Stories
Trash
The Message
Heart of Gold
Objects in Space
---------
Serenity (the movie)
Maybe next year, maybe no go

What the others have said. Also, if you have the series on DVD / Blu Ray, the episodes will already be in the intended order.

When you're done with the series & movie, you'll then have to look up clips of Firefly easter eggs in Castle and other shows.

To clarify, yes, everything was left frustratingly up in the air when it got cancelled. Whedon used the movie (Serenity) to finish the story and explain many of the unexplained twists.

Watched together, they're fantastic and give closure.

I think the movie ties the story threads from the series up in a pretty good way. It's well worth the frustration of thinking about what could have been.

You oughta be shot. Or stabbed, lose a leg. To be a surgeon, you know? Know what kind of pain you're dealing with. They make psychiatrists get psychoanalyzed before they can get certified, but they don't make a surgeon get cut on. That seem right to you?

tjg, please don't be tempted to look at Daehawk's spoiler. Even though it is fairly non-specific, you'll be better off not knowing even that much info.

Someone should make it clearer IMO...shouting if necessary:

WATCH SERIES FIRST, THEN MOVIE. Only in that order!

I watched the series sporadically, as I came across episodes, (didn't even know there WAS an intended order), and thought it was great. The movie, IMO, is several steps above in terms of enjoyment factor in my brain (could be due to length of course) I watched the series with interest, but not "OMG this is the best thing on TV!" zeal.

The movie, OTOH, blew my mind.

It was probably my favorite episode. I would not recommend watching it out of order though, only works if you know the characters.

My eldest daughter is currently introducing her new boyfriend to Firefly/Serenity.

He's only 18 and apparently his parents neglected an essential part of his education.

They have gone through the first six episodes now and according to reports he is "totally hooked."

I actually saw the movie in theaters, then watched the series later. I didn't watch the original airing because I was convinced Fox was going to screw it up.

This! I think I might dig out my Cowboy Bebop set and watch it again. Toys In The Attic is probably my fav. episode of any show ever.

One of the worst things about the cancellation of Firefly was the fact that we would never get to see the return of Jubal Early.

Some trivia for you all, Jubal Early, in real life was a Confederate General.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?

It's a good show, people tend to oversell it now but it is definitely quality. Just please, please, on all that is holy, don't start saying "gorram" or interjecting Firefly into every minimally related thread on the Internet.

It's become a regular part of the vocabulary in the Skinypupy household...mostly because "goddamn" is off limits.

If I ever win the powerball..which I never play.....and get over 400 million I will rehire every one and film at least 3 new seasons worth. If popilar then 9 more seasons with options for 3 new theater movies and 5 tv movies. Not to mention a spin off series.

Watching all of it gives closure on "almost" everything. There is one character whose background we do not learn much about, but it is not crucial to the story line.

Who would that be, in spoiler tags?

Yes, that is the one, and I disagree, because...
Spoiler:
why the Alliance so readily helps him in one of the Firefly episodes is never really explained. That is the missing back-story.
That's all. :)

Then I say that you need to watch the movie again.
Spoiler:
Serenity was all about Book and his back story, but it's done pretty subtly. The main bad guy in the story represents Book, and his journey throughout the movie is quite likely the same journey Book went through that resulted in him joining the Serenity's crew. That answers your question about why the Alliance helps him as well.
Insert witty comment here.
