The Spotify Game! Round Two!

Postby paulbaxter » Sat Jul 14, 2012 12:01 pm

Rules are pretty simple. Each week one person is "it". This person may or may not choose to talk about his or her taste in music. Other participants suggest a song (should be available for play on Spotify). By the end of the week, the "it" person must listen to all of the songs for that week and pick their favorite. Person who submitted the song is the winner and is "it" for the next week. Only one submission allowed per week, although the "it" person reserves the right to throw out any suggestion for any reason (over familiarity or whatever).

Questions? Interest?

Cool Idea. Too bad there's not been much new for me lately. But this may be the way to hear something new, meaning

It's a pretty low maintenance sort of game, so I say we just start with whoever wants to participate. By virtue of coming up with the game, I claim the privilege of going first. If I really stink in later rounds it may be my last chance anyway.

My tastes: fairly wide. I'm unlikely to like modern country or hip hop (unless the songs are extremely funny, in which case I might give it a chance). I tend to prefer groups that seem to show some mastery of their instruments, though not exclusively so. Listened to a lot of Zeppelin and Rush and assorted classic rock back in the day. I've really gotten familiar with very few bands from the past ten years, so just try me I guess.

I'll pick a winner next Sunday out of the pool of entrants.

Sure, sounds like a neat game. My tastes aren't super "indie", so I may not have a ton of gems in the rough, but I'd think I could produce a few songs that the it person hasn't paid attention to.

Might also make sense for the "it" person to post a list of their favorite bands, to give a better sense of tastes and to avoid posting songs that they already listen to. :)

I'm not sure how spotify links work, so try this

http://open.spotify.com/track/1wXk6V8q7ahzpzVdcwwPHW

The song is "Hair Song" by Black Mountain, yet another Canadian band. The name should say it all as far as working with a lot of Led Zeppelin vibe. However, they don't have the heaviness of Rush that I would assume you're looking for when naming the two bands. Still, I totally dig it and maybe you will too.

(though I'm tempted to take this back for something less classic rock sounding and more instrument mastery sounding)

You should be good with just posting the song name and the group. It's pretty easy to look things up.

This isn't really close to what you've listed, but try out Sharon Van Etten's "Serpents".

Having fun with the tunes so far. I'm thinking for future rounds, "it" should perhaps specify some sort of theme or restriction for the week, like "songs with a woman's name in the title" or "songs from outside North America" or whatever. Will help to focus our creativity a bit. But I'll just leave that up to whoever is it for the week.

What is discriminatory about it? If you live in a third world country without Spotify, use Rdio. If it's on Rdo it is almost 90% sure to be on Spotify.

At least here in the free world you can get a free version of Spotify, you just have to pay for "Spotify Premium":

Here in Canada we believe in subsidizing our poor, starving artists. Therefore we're absolutely delighted to live in the entertainment stone age. Netflix Canada just made available it's seventh film for streaming. We threw a party!

Also in my experience, if a song is available for download in the Amazon mp3 store, the chances are very good that it is available via Spotify.

No, we can confirm that a track might be available to download. We just can't actually do that without tricking the system into thinking we're Americans.

Spotify is discriminatory against people who don't want Facebook. Though it looks like Rdio can work without it.

OK, Sunday morning is here.
The only song which didn't really do anything for me (sorry), was the Hilltop Hoods.

Serpents gets special mention for being an odd ear worm. Kinda grew on me a bit, but still not my thing.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a fine guitarist, but that particular song didn't really grab me.
Kinski gets points for having some originality. The do keep hitting that one note pretty hard.
Hair Song gets the runner up award. The Zep influence is quite strong, and I really liked the vocals.

But the winner for round 1 is Kurth for the Wolfmother selection. I do have a buddy who's really into Wolfmother, but I'm pretty sure I only heard one album played through once. I listened to In The Morning several times last week and really enjoyed it. Well played.

Let everyone know what you'd like to hear this week, and pick a deadline date if you would.

Round Two is officially on.

My tastes: I'll just name some bands and albums I really, really like (in no order of preference whatsoever): Radiohead, The Beatles (Revolver), Pink Floyd (DSotM), The Cure (Disintegration), The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones (Sticky Fingers), Bon Iver, Nirvana, Interpol, Soundgarden, White Stripes, TV on the Radio, Nine Inch Nails, Bruce Springstein (Nebraska), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, Foo Fighters, Muse, Grizzly Bear, The Pixies, Metallica (Master of Puppets) . . .

That's probably more than enough. I'm not a huge fan of country or hip hop (except for the Beastie Boys and Kanye West), but I'm open to anything. Extra points for either something (1) that's new to me, or (2) that I can run to.

Looking forward to getting some picks. Nominations close 11:59 Saturday, 7/28.

With that list I'd recommend seeing Sleigh Bells live. They were a modern version of the movement of the late 80s and early 90s move to independence from pop/rock. Fantastic. Sadly, their recorded stuff isn't even in the same league at their live performance.

Not sure which direction to go with that diversity (first instinct would be Cage the Elephant but you're looking for something more obscure), so I'll go from the White Stripes angle (especially with Wolfmother mention)

I'll try "Mountain Man" by Crash Kings
