Started seeing these ads on the PS3 yesterday. The show might be interesting, but man, are those some intrusive ads. Instead of letting you start the next episode when one ends, it now just prompts you to watch this trailer. Boo!
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

Was surprised to see this when I loaded up Netflix last night. That said, it looks amazing.

I guess I was the odd man out, because I dug K-Pax. Terrible title, but curious movie.
Today I will gladly share my experience and advice, for there are no sweeter words than "I told you so."

You mean the fact that he's been busy with theatre because he'd rather do that than movies?hepcat wrote:Remember when Spacey was all the rage? What happened to that fellow?

Yeah, that was surely the fault of K-Pax.

We might watch this. We like Kevin Spacey and really liked the original British series.

Re: [Netflix] House of Cards
I've heard good things about it so I'm going to give it a go. The bigger interest for me is in Netflix attempting something new with original programming. I'm curious to see if this plays out well for them as I'd love to see a challenge to the standard paradigm of television programming.

As for House of Cards, I just finished watching the first episode. It's good, and very cerebral. If you're not interested in politics, this is going to bore you. It's also very unusual in that the main character will often turn towards the camera and directly address the audience, even with people standing right next to him. It gives you access to the kind of information you'd get in a book with his inner thoughts, but in a rather strange way.

Re: [Netflix] House of Cards
So, last night I sat down just to watch the first episode. Ended up watching four. I think this is Kevin Spacey's best role since Glengarry Glen Ross.
I'm not saying the show is perfect (I agree with a reviewer that the newspaper segments are a bit cliched), but the performances are excellent and, after finding the breaking the 4th wall initially jarring, I actually really like getting into Spacey's character's head. Also, the show does this technique where you can see the text messages people are sending. Makes total sense and I've not seen it integrated to this extent before.
Based on what I've seen to far, I'd say it's worth $7.99 to watch all 13 episodes* even if you don't touch any other Netflix programming for the month. (I actually think they are crazy from a business standpoint to release them all at once--not that I am complaining).
* assuming you like HBO-ish dramas and political intrigue

Netflix is supposedly contractually obligated to produce a second season btw, so there's little risk of this being a single-season show.

Do you only get one channel on your television...and it only works during reruns of west wing or something? My television has sci if, horror, comedy and a myriad of shows other than political dramas and satires. Is it an off brand tv maybe?Daehawk wrote:Description sounds just like everything else on TV.

Really enjoying it. I was afraid it would be lighter fare, but they went dark pretty quick in the very first episode. Now I just have to hold myself back from a marathon.

TrailerA young girl is brutally murdered and found near the former Godfrey steel mill. As rumors mount, two of the suspects in her killing—Peter Rumancek, a 17-year-old Gypsy trailer trash kid rumored to be a werewolf, and Roman, the heir to the Godfrey estate—decide to find the killer themselves.

So, Twin Peaks meets Twilight meets Gossip Girl?
That may either work...or it may quickly become a new The Following.

With Eli Roth directing, I wouldn't expect to see very much Twilight or Gossip Girl in there. Looks promising to me.

Back to "House of Cards" real quick. Loved it. Watched whole first season in a couple of days. Surprisingly got kind of dark, but i was fascinated at all of the insider look at politics. I also liked that they made Frank Underwood real. By this I mean that he can lose at some things hes tried, hes not perfect. And how he gets back up from those loss'es.
I disliked the Peter Russo character at first, but really began to like him.
I cannot wait to the second season, and hope they release it all once again.

Continuing its quest to sate subscribers' appetites with a flow of original content, Netflix has announced a new original series, Sense8. Due in late 2014, it's being developed by the Wachowskis of The Matrix, V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer fame, as well as J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5.
...
According to the creators themselves, they've sought to work together for a decade, and this idea started from a late night conversation about "the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us."
Sense8 is being produced by Georgeville Television, in association with Studio JMS. Georgeville Television is a Reliance Entertainment company and independent television studio, formed by veteran film and television producer Marc Rosen, in partnership by Motion Picture Capital's Leon Clarance and Producer Deepak Nayar. Formed in 2012, Georgeville Television currently has two series in pre-production, including NBC's Crossbones starring John Malkovich. Rosen, Clarance, and Nayar will serve as executive producers on Sense8.

Wow, I had heard the Wachowskis were behind it, but hadn't seen JMS was involved. I will definitely be giving this one a shot. Will check out Hemlock Grove as well. House of Cards was good enough to get me to at least try Amazon's new series.

Re: Netflix Original Series
Hemlock Grove gets a second season:
“The worldwide fan response to Hemlock Grove was phenomenal,” said [Eli] Roth in a statement. “Netflix members loved the potent combination of sexy monsters, mystery and the dark family soap opera that ended with a huge twist, leaving audiences worldwide totally shocked. Season 1 was just a warm up for what we have in store for Season 2. Get ready to be scared in ways you never expected.”
