I've mentioned it before elsewhere, but Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast is a well spring of raunchy comedy, and quite often a loving tribute to classic Hollywood.

The latest episode with Dan Harmon of Community fame (and the equally great Rick and Morty) had me in tears from laughter a few times.

This has been an excellent alternative to crap radio. I was getting worried that I was getting to the end of the of Blueprint for Armageddon. I finished up V this morning and was pleasantly surprised when it kicked over to episode VI, which posted Wednesday.

Yep. I just started VI. The descriptions of the Battle of Passchendaele in V were just so incredibly chilling. I sat in shock.

I highly highly highly recommend buying Ghosts of the Ostfront (WWII Eastern Front) and Death Throes of the Republic (Rome)

Wrath of the Khans is also still free.

I don't have that luxury, as that's my drive time.

I've got WotK 1-5 and everything forward at the moment. I may go back for more, but it depends on how long I can put up with the wide volume swings between his whispered telling and his loud quote reading.

Just an update:

I discovered that my favorite NPR show, Under the Influence, is available to download via most popular podcast applications, or through the website I just linked to.

It's a wonderful look at advertising throughout the ages. Fascinating topics such as the history of commercial parodies, how porn and advertising finally hooked up, and others are parsed out over half hour episodes each week. I can't recommend it enough!

Also, if you're a fellow fan of the Gilbert Gottfried Amazing Colossal Podcast, do yourself a favor and grab the episode he recently aired with Peter Bogdanovich. He's led a fascinating life in Hollywood. But the highlight of the (long) interview was hearing him talk about his friendship with the genius that was Orson Welles. He really humanizes him. I loved Peter talking about the periods in which Orson lived with him. I laughed out loud at the image of Orson Welles walking through Peter's study on the way to the living room, with a bowl of ice cream in one hand and a drink in the other, while telling Peter, "Mary Tyler Moore is on!" like an excited kid.

Cross reference of something that's not technically a podcast, but worth a listen, a contemporary radio serial, "Calling All Creeps".

wot?

To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?

Unless one loses a precious thing, he will never know its true value. A little light finally scratches the darkness; it lets the exhausted one face his shattered dream and realize his path cannot be walked. Can man live happily without embracing his wounded heart?

Damn if Rogan doesn't have the most interesting and varied guests. I've never heard of this Canadian professor. He's articulate and hella smart.

We are definitely in a golden of podcasts if my listening backlog on Pocket Casts is any indication. In case anyone is looking for some good listening the folks behind Serial and TAL have started a new series, S-Town. The production values are through the roof and I was instantly hooked. Another interesting short run that also has incredible production work with an addictive story is Missing Richard Simmons.

A short update on my current main podcasts (excluding the above):

Radio Diaries
Radiolab
Wait Wait Don't Tell Me
This American Life
99% Invisible
The Moth
Snap Judgement
Risk
Love + Radio
Strangers
Reply All

SciFri
Myths and Legends
StoryCorps

Modern Love
Half Hour Intern

The Allusionist

The Economist Radio

And good lord, I could go on but I'm going to stop here. I have a problem. :D

S-Town is downloaded. I'll probably start listening sometime this week. I've been listening to a lot of political podcasts since the election.

Pod Save America
Pod Save The World
NPR Politics
The Daily
538 Politics

But I do like listening to a couple of podcasts about the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Marvel News and Marvel Cinematic Universe Podcast.

Other random podcasts:

The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe
The Black Tapes
Common Sense with Dan Carlin
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History

I have to listen at 2X speed, or with some, even 3X speed. You get used to it after awhile. It's the only way I can keep up with the 30 or so I subscribe to.

There are some that I won't listen to sped up. Anything that heavily utilizes music, or where voice inflection is important. However, with a great deal of them, it's just information.

Is this only way to do this via a smartphone app? I'd love to do this but I'm a crazy person who still listens to podcasts using my Zune HD, a device I just adore (it's compact, fast, and easy to use). But maybe it's time for a change.

As far as I know. I'm using Downcast for iOS, and it gives a ton of speed options up to 3X. I started by listening at 1.5X, then progressively moved up in .5 increments as my brain became more accustomed to it. (One funny side effect is that if I listen to a podcast at normal speed, it sometimes feels like they're talking in extreme slow motion). There are other apps out there that use some smart speed options which don't do a global speed up, but instead just shorten the gaps between silences. I haven't tried those, but at this point I assume they'd be too slow for me.

I did a little research on "speed listening" out of curiosity, and there are people who claim to listen to stuff at 10X, which is insane.

I refuse, however, to listen to audiobooks at accelerated speed. I may change my mind at some point, but I find that I miss too much in terms of the performance and nuances than I'm comfortable with. Podasts seems a bit more "disposable."

I also resort to the speed thing, but I sort of have some I only listen to maybe monthly where others I always listen to the latest episodes. To me it's really awesome to have a huge pile of high-quality audio to listen to at all times. Long car trip? Awesome, I can catch up on my podcasts!

For anyone listening to politics-related stuff, I *really* enjoy The Axe Files, hosted by David Axelrod (Obama's campaign manager).

He has a good mix of conservatives and liberals on, but it's not really an ideological show as it's really about the stories of how these people got to where they are. There's some politics but overall each hour has been a pleasure to listen to.
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

I just got to the end of Episode 2 of S-Town when I pulled into work. Holy shit.

I was expecting what happened at the end of the episode was eventually going to happen in the course of this story, but not this soon.

Now, do I want to try and listen to the next episode while I sit here at work, or do I wait until I go home tonight? Lots of interruptions at work. Not sure.

Finished S-Town today. It was really good and it's sad that (I presume?) that's the end. A few points/questions:
Spoiler:
1) Based on how John had been described in prior years, it seems highly unlikely that mercury poisoning didn't play at least some role in his depression/obsession/personality change. John was smart enough to know the risks so it's actually a bit surprising he never mentioned that possibility to Brian Reed.

2) It almost sounded at the end like Tyler may have actually found the gold/money on John's property. Or at least that seems to be what the podcast wants to make you think happened.

Finished S-Town today as well. Binged the last 5 episodes while working in the yard.

I'm not exaggerating when I say it may be one of the most compelling and thought-provoking pieces of media I've ever consumed. It has haunted me the past two days, and I can't get it out of my mind.

I've got a friend who refuses to listen to podcasts because he says it's "talk radio." No matter how many times I've tried to explain that podcasts take many forms, and to dismiss them all as "talk radio" is akin to dismissing all television as "reality TV." Yet he will watched five seasons of some crappy TV show that in 100 episodes can't touch the depth and beauty of this seven-hour program.

I've been dying to discuss it with someone, but podcast fanatics are few and far between in my RL social circles.

I binged through S-Town on Saturday. I have mixed feelings on it. Mainly, it doesn't know what story it wants to tell.
Spoiler:
It's two parts murder mystery, three parts treasure hunt, and two parts biopic.

Each part on their own were great. But the final two episodes focusing solely on John's life felt like a cop out. They spent five episodes building intrigue over what happened to the gold. We learned about the three factions that were looking for it: the family, Tyler(was that his name?), and the city. It's a completely compelling story, and then it's completely abandoned, only touched on again with a vague mention in the final episode.

Don't get me wrong, there was great stuff in the final two episodes. It was haunting, sad, and made me feel all the feels. But the lack of a through line through all seven episodes keeps this from being great, IMO.

That was my take on it as well. It was just strange to abandon what felt like the entire point of the show, only to briefly come back to it in the final episode.

But if what is at least hinted at is true, then what could Brian Reed say about it without giving away what he knows (or acting like he didn't know the answer already)?

I just wonder
Spoiler:
if Tyler really does have this mythical gold, is he smart enough to get rid of it without exposing himself as having it? And I wonder if he ended up going to prison? Was that mentioned in the wrap up episode?

Hey guys, I know this is super spammy, but we had Craig Gass on our show today. It was an absolute blast.... that guy is hilarious and super weird/hyper/kind/cool. I left the studio with the biggest smile on my face. Just had to share it. :)

Will be posting it in a few hours/days. (back to your regularly scheduled internet thread)

Pod Save the World just posted an interview with the former deputy director of the CIA. He doesn't get into any details, of course, but it's interesting to hear his views on the role of the CIA and how it relates to policymakers. Also, he tells a good story about a disguise.
