Holy crap. On a whim my wife tried out a new podcast last night before she went to bed, and I've been addicted to it all day:
My Dad Wrote a Porno

It's by the son of the eponymous dad who reads a chapter a week of this dad's erotic novel and makes fun of it with his friends.

It sounds weird, but it is oddly hilarious.

He has a thick Italian accent, but his storytelling reminds me a lot of Carlin. I've listened to his first three and they are really good.

I tried the episode "0" just to see if I could tolerate the accent. It is not bad at all, and he actually jokes in there that some people will not listen due to it, but he doesn't want to lose it because the ladies like it. LOL.

Unless you REALLY hate Italian accents, it is not bad at all, Msteelers.

Thanks for the recommendation, Mcnutt. I needed a new podcast.. some of the others (runners world, human race, even the Moth) I was getting tired of.

An accent or, in the case of the runners world one where this Brian Dalek "producer" hosts or does segments, the speech impediment is impossible to listen to, it can kill the urge to listen.

One question about downloading and saving episodes. I normally download anything that I am going to listen to in the immediate future, and then delete it when I have finished with it. My phone does not have that much memory (stupid iphones).

The History on Fire guy mentioned about taking older episodes off due to bandwith costs, etc. Is there a way to download a bunch of episodes and store them on my computer, then load them to the phone? I'm sure there is a way to do it in itunes (I have an iphone but a pc at home), but itunes can be a challenge to figure out normal things.

since the podcast is a separate app on the iphone, what folder would they be stored in?

sorry for the tech stupidity.

Stumbled across a funny little podcast for horror fans called MY NEIGHBORS ARE DEAD.

It's an improvisational comedy interview show in which each episode host Adam Peacock interviews a neighbor to some well-known horror movie massacre. For instance, in the Friday the 13th episode they interview two camp counselors who worked at the Christian camp on the other side of Crystal Lake. Or the hunting supply guy who sold the Blair Witch kids their camping equipment.

As you might expect the content can be hit or miss, but when it hits it's very, very, funny. The episodes are short as well - typically only 15-20 minutes each.

I have started (again) trying to walk for exercise on a regular basis and have just started listening to podcasts. This is really great as I am hooked and now look forward to walking every day. Sometime I want to go past my hour for another 30 minutes so I can kee listening. I've found a number of the ones recommended above, but I would like to recommend 2 if you like history:

History of Rome
History of Byzantium

I love ancient/classical/medieval history and have read a lot - yet I always find out something I don't know in each pod cast. I'd highly recommend these two if you are interested in these two subjects or just want to learn more about these two pivotal cultures/empires in Western history.

Not sure if it’s been talked about but after listening to the first two episodes of Mr. Fed’s new podcast (Make No Law), which was excellent, I took a listen to “Slow Burn”, which is about Watergate. It’s generally about lesser known aspects that aren’t really talked about unless you lived through it. Listened to the first two episodes today and enjoyed it.

Ok, Dan Carlin has me hooked. I've downloaded an listened to his series on WW1 and it was fantastic. He's got a few free ones, but most of tho others you need to pay for. I have no problem with that. The issue is they are $2.99 each on iTunes and $1.99 on his website. If I buy and download from his website, how can I do this on my phone and then play them on my podcast app (Podbean)? Any idea how to do this?

Not sure. You download the files as mp3's, so I'm assuming they would go into whatever mp3 player you use (like an iTunes).

You can download all of his episodes for $70, which works out to about 70 cents an episode. But if you want to start small, I would strongly suggest the Wrath of the Khans series, which is $10.

Funny coincidence, just the other night I finished re-listening to Prophets of Doom for the third time and decided to bite the bullet and pick up Death Throes of the Republic.

I use the excellent app Pocket Casts, and for me at least, I clicked on the download link in my mobile browser, told it to open the mp3s in Pocket Casts, and once I did it showed up like another podcast in the list where I can play and re-download episodes at will.

In other Mr. Fed news, he's now the permanent guest on a new NPR podcast called All the President's Lawyers. It's an excellent rundown of each weeks legal news, generally as pertains to Drumpf and his cronies.

My wife turned me on to a new podcast I've been enjoying more and more lately called The Film Reroll.

Basically it's a group of New York actors/improvisors/role players who role play their way through popular movies using GURPS. Among the movies they've done: Alien, Jurassic Park, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Home Alone, Rogue One, From Dusk 'Til Dawn.

Even the ones that don't sound all that interesting to me tend to be pretty entertaining once they get through them. The GM does an amazing job fleshing out the various worlds and creating the characters in a way that really works, and the players are all entertaining.

I'm currently listening to their version of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. To pull it off the GM told them they were doing an independent movie from the 80's called "Summer Spell". The part where Jason comes out of the water and it dawns on the group members who hadn't already figured it out that they were in a horror movie was priceless.

Anyway, big thumbs up from me.

I listened to the first couple of episodes, then stopped so I could binge through the entire season rather than waiting for them to come out each week. I'll probably finish it up this week.

We used to buy the old radio show cassettes from Cracker Barrel. I remember enjoying The Shadow and the old Superman shows.

My favorite new podcast is Everything Is Alive, a show where the host interviews inanimate objects.

I'm also a fan of The Art of Manliness. It's a pretty low key show with an interview each episode with someone the host finds interesting. Topics include history, fitness and exercise, fashion, psychology, money management, leadership, philosophy, as well as guests who've written books on skills that men could or should know. Never flashy, but always informative.

My latest favorite is Cooking Issues.

It's done by one of my culinary heroes, Dave Arnold. He's an inventor, a writer, a restaurateur and overall genius.

If you like irreverent humor, off the wall perspective and hardcore food science you will love this.

Wait, I'm literally the only person in this demographic? That just can't be!

Well, the Onion has finally decided to satirize shows like Serial and S Town with A Very Fatal Murder.

I know that this is the most compelling murder in America. I know that the victim was a supple young girl in the prime of her life. And I know that she was killed by simultaneous gunshot-stabbing-strangling-drowning.

Dark but funny. I like that they made the podcaster somewhat of a sociopath himself.

A friend of mine turned me on to yet another long form history podcast similar to History of Rome: Age of Napoleon.

It starts with an overview of the era including a backgrounder on the French Revolution and recent Corsican history before starting on a detailed biography of Napoleon. He's up to Egypt now and making weekly updates.

It's hosted by an amateur historian, but Napoleon is his passion and, occasional 18th century political asides not withstanding, it's very well researched.
