My Name Is Sudy Nym and I Have a Problem
How many browser tabs do you have open right now? On your personal computer?
I have 243 in my primary Firefox session.
Another 9 up on my second monitor.
Then I have 10 in Chrome (not always open).
I try to purge often, but I never get very far. Using TabMix, a whole quarter of my browser window is just tabs. The problem increased exponentially when I discovered io9. They have a habit of posting headlines I find very interesting, but I often don't have or want to take the time to read the lengthier articles or watch the videos. Yet I can't bring myself to close them. There are also a lot of RPS articles.
The oldest not-always-open tab (e.g. Gmail) I have open right now is an io9 article from January 14th of this year. There would probably be even more tabs if Session Manager hadn't lost some up-to-date sessions after computer crashes. And don't get me started on bookmarks.
Help me. I'm drowning.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

You have 243 tabs open in Firefox? How the hell has Firefox not simply imploded? How much RAM is that thing eating up? Lord.
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

I have 2 open. I've gone up to 7 sometimes but not often.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

I don't think it can go over 2gb. Mine is hovering around 1.8 with 81 tabs open, 70 are work related. At home, I only have 3 tabs open since I'm usually gaming.Chaz wrote:You have 243 tabs open in Firefox? How the hell has Firefox not simply imploded? How much RAM is that thing eating up? Lord.
Sudy, you need to learn to let go. I'm not a shrink but this seems like some desire for knowledge that is overwhelming you. Talk to a pro?

... what? How is that even possible.
Why would you need so many tabs.
Use favorites maybe?
Even ibdoomed at 81 is completely insane.

I mainly want to see 1/4 of a screen showing nothing but tabs. But I'm afraid that if this screenshot got loose it would find its way to reddit and would soon be the next meme rage. Maybe it's best not to post that beast. But damn, my curiosity is killing me.

So you're saying that you work for the NSA? Is each tab a cell phone call that you are monitoring?ibdoomed wrote:I should add that I use sidetabs so it shows actual info, not just some stupid icon along the top.ibdoomed wrote:Sorry I'm not comfortable doing that. Also, I'm not clear how with 243 tabs there's enough room for each tab to display legible information.

It drives me bonkers when my wife leaves the computer with 25 tabs open and then gets mad when I close them. We ended up using two different browsers so she can leave her crap up and I just close it out. Firefox restores it when she opens it again. On my old computer it would make my games run like crap. DROVE ME INSANE.

Of course, the tab bar scrolls. That's only displaying half of what I actually have open.

We're first. I always open a gazillion tabs with control click and then the tabs from right to left. If they were from bottom to top, I would read them that way too. It's the LIFO way.
I suspect this is some sort or right handed conspiracy you're trying to pass off where we always have to go from left to right.

Re: My Name Is Sudy Nym and I Have a Problem
Yeah, I definitely run into flash problems. I restart it via task manager whenever it gets slow. But mind you, most of these tabs aren't actually loaded; they're just in a saved state from my last reboot, ready to be loaded on demand. Most of the Youtube windows are like bookmarks for songs I want to download later that I heard on TV shows.
But I need it! If I close those tabs, I might never run into that knowledge again! And I want to write books someday. Absorbing this stuff is important. Wouldn't you want scientific evidence you probably don't have free will? What about how much it would cost to building the Enterprise? Whether the Toronto Blue Jays have the most unruly drunken fans in baseball?!ibdoomed wrote:Sudy, you need to learn to let go. I email myself hyperlinks all of the time. I have emailed hyperlinks with no context as to why I sent them to myself going back 2003 (the age of my personal email account) that I need to read or delete. I likely have more sitting in .pst format that I should go over or delete as well going back to 1995.Sudy Nym wrote:But I need it! If I close those tabs, I might never run into that knowledge again!

What I usually do is open up pages from my feeds that I want to read, have those 5 or 8 or 15, however many they are that day, and have all of those tabs sitting there. Then over the next few hours or days I work my way through them, eventually landing back with one tab. Right now I have 8 open out of the 12 I started this browsing session with.Sudy Nym wrote:One... tab? Why don't you just go back to 1999? When I'm researching I'll open ten or twelve tabs, but once I'm finished I close them. Get ready for another shock... I have no bookmarks. I haven't used bookmarks on my personal browser in about ten years. (At work I'll use bookmarks for sites that have boneheaded names, cryptic server names, or stupidly long urls, but those are few.)
In honesty the way I used browsers and the internet in general is similar to the way my brain works. I seldom remember things by rote, instead I remember how I figured it out the first time. The same goes for crap on the internet... if I found it once I can find it again, and I found out long ago that I could locate a site quicker with Google than I could by searching a list of hundreds of bookmarks. In same vein, I'd spend more time searching through 243 freaking tabs than I would typing a few search terms into Google or Bing.
Hmmm... at this point I now have two tabs open. I opened a tab to Google so that I could check that I spelled "rote" correctly and that the spelling matched the definition that I had in mind. When I'm finished checking OO, I'll close the browser at which time I'll have no tabs open.
