I have a consultation Monday to do a cover up of my tramp stamp. Really excited with my concept; I'm hopeful a real artist will be able to do what I envision. Will post pics when I am eventually done.

Re: 2013 tattoo thread..your's their's good bad..nsfw
OK, so I was SUPER excited about my tattoo consultation last week, and it ended up being just a huge disappointment.
I have a tramp stamp that's really, really old and really, really not anything I want anymore. I'm not going to explain it...let's just say it's a T for Tattoo, ok? It's very small (a 50 cent piece would cover it) and was done long before tramp stamps became ubiquitous.
Old, shitty tramp stamp:
So, I go in for my appointment (after having spent an hour at the shop the weekend before, looking through tons of books of their artist's prior work and styles and asking lots of questions and picking out exactly who I wanted) and I give the guy the following:
Crappily drawn but very clear concept art:
[bigimg]http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t198 ... 873d40.jpg[/bigimg]
Cool artwork that's pretty much exactly what I want except not black, and without the bubbles and star a la my concept drawing:
Color scheme/theme/conceptual art source:
[bigimg]http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t198 ... 287986.jpg[/bigimg]
Here's what he drew on me:
[bigimg]http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t198 ... 17b18d.jpg[/bigimg]
Now, the art is nice and all, but it's not even remotely close to what I asked for. The very first thing I said to the guy was that I loved his art but I had very specific ideas about what I wanted and can he work with that? I respect that they are artists and some don't want to do art they aren't interested in. I am sad now. But I haven't given up. I just need to start eying up every tattoo I see and asking for personal recommendations for guys who will do modern American tattoos.

My half sister is a killer artist (she recently did some more ink on me which was a cool experience), but she's in California right now then heading back to Maine in March. She's been in tattoo magazine etc as as a top female artist.
Run far away from that shop, they didn't listen and his sketch IMO is crap. You're lucky to learn with pen ink instead of perm!

Hummm... New Jersey to Maine, how far can it be? And a quick search = 9 hours MHS, you have to have a job travel thing closer to Maine this year. Think you should PM Mr. Pants and start up a conversationFishPants wrote:... then heading back to Maine in March.

Agreed. The image was too realistic, much too big and in no way respectful of your source material/artistic style. I've seen better, and I'm pretty far removed from tattoo culture. You avoided disaster.

Trust me, I would never let anyone actually ink me without seeing drawings of exactly what's going on me first! I won't be going back to that shop, much less that same guy.

Re: 2013 tattoo thread..your's their's good bad..nsfw
Normally, a cover-up tattoo has to be larger. Especially when it is a solid design you are covering. Otherwise the lines just look wrong or the old design will still show through. A good artist would have traced the design on your back and then went to the drawing board with a few options for a cover-up.
In my case, she not only traced the old tattoo on my arm, but also the outline of my arm so she knew what size she had to deal with. I wanted a 1/2-3/4 sleeve so she had lots of space. In your case, you could go with a smaller design, but keep in mind that the design will have to be bigger than your current tattoo and/or darker.
I can give you the name of the place I used, if you want, but it is in NJ. You should be able to find a local place that can give you what you want, though. Alternatively, you can go to a tattoo show and shop around there. I wouldn't get the tattoo at the show though unless they offer a huge discount on it and it is exactly what you want.

There is a TV show called Bad Ink that I think is on TLC. Interesting for a couple episodes. Basically a tattoo artist and a friend in Las Vegas fix peoples bad tattoo's. A little banter between the two, meet the client, hear the story on how the tattoo came to be, commercial break, see the bad tattoo, discussion on what to do, a shot of the host doing some work, commercial break, and the reveal. Rinse and repeat. The host is a very good artist, not to my tastes, but does a very good job. Seeing some of these bad tattoos, there are many bad tattoo "artists" out there.

Re: 2013 tattoo thread..your's their's good bad..nsfw
What does one say to a friend who gets a really ugly tattoo? One of my gaming buddies showed us his first-ever tattoo: It's a large graph of a sound file with the filename "(something).wav" written under it in a foofy script. It's on the inside of his forearm, so pretty prominent. He explained that it's a recording of the voice of a friend who committed suicide a couple of years ago. So it's aesthetically ugly, makes sense only after being explained, and only has meaning to him.
I finally came up with "That's a really nice tribute to your friend," but it took me a minute to get there. My gut reaction was "OMG that's going to be really hard to remove."
