[TV] The Goldbergs.....set in the 1980's
http://abc.go.com/shows/the-goldbergs" target="_blank
Imagine That 70's Show set in the 80's but it's not really funny. Thats this show. Im giving it a chance with my wife. The pilot doesn't give me much hope. I dont think I even chuckled but once and that may have been an accident. Of course they wreck the only cool car in it..an 86 Trans-Am...mine was burgundy in color though.
It did feel like the 80's from the music and the looks but I dont recall anyone I knew acting like them. Ugh. But since it is the 80's Ill give it a bit more time to grow on me.
And wow its been long enough now that they can make a show about the 80's now. I am old. Im guessing this show starts in 1986 since that was the year of the Trans-Am. I was 17 then.

Yeah, I'm going to have to ask you to cease and desist calling it that 80's show.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

My wife and I watched it and laughed a lot, so we have set it to record on the DVR.

That's not The Goldbergs. This is The Goldbergs.
Needless to say it was a big hit in the household back when tgb was just a little pisser.

Not quite. I remember going to see The Jazz Singer with dbt like it was yesterday. Movies were a nickle back then, and you got two, a newsreel, and a cartoon. It would have been great except for all the horseshit in the streets.hepcat wrote:Weren't talkies still a bit in the future when you were a kid though?

I liked it.
Much better than the Anna Farris sitcom I watched the same night. That one had no chemistry amongst the characters.

I am loving this show, possibly my favorite of all the new comedies. The ties to the 80's are strong for me, so all the references hit the nail on the head.

Was watching the episode with the cable box with my wife and son. While they were fighting over the box I said "If you hit 2 of those buttons the right way, you got a scrambled porn channel". Sure enough, that's exactly what happened.

It's mildly funny only because I'm a child of the 80's. I highly doubt this makes it to season 2.
Capitalism tries for a delicate balance: It attempts to work things out so that everyone gets just enough stuff to keep them from getting violent and trying to take other people’s stuff.

Well, apparently it has and even managed to pull off a couple of award nominations. I'm actually curious enough to watch it at some point (just haven't gotten around to it...too many shows to catch up on).Octavious wrote:It's mildly funny only because I'm a child of the 80's. I don't like that It just lumps all 80s references together, without establishing when this occurs.

Re: [TV] The Goldbergs.....set in the 1980's
I recall that there were references in the pilot that made me think it was in '86 or so, as I pegged Adam as being within a month or two of my own age (even though the real-life Adam Goldberg is several years younger.)
I can see them avoiding using a hard date, though, as it would be inconvenient for them if the decade ended in the middle of the show and they had to turn their neon leg warmers in for gray plaid.

Great episode. Optimus dying never bothered me, it was Rodimus sucking so bad at being a leader that was the worst outcome from that.

Re: [TV] The Goldbergs.....set in the 1980's
I agree. I consider myself a child of the 80s, but I graduated High School in 1986 which means I was really a child of the early 80s. I was off to college in 1986 and so wrapped up in my own world of partying and studying, I pretty much missed the 2nd half of the nerdy 80s. I knew nothing of Transformers, toys or TV shows of the mid 80s and beyond.Blackhawk wrote:I recall that there were references in the pilot that made me think it was in '86 or so, as I pegged Adam as being within a month or two of my own age (even though the real-life Adam Goldberg is several years younger.)

I'm loving this show. I didn't watch it when it first came out but caught rerun during the season break and started watching it. It came out on Netflix DVD before the next season started so was able to catch up. I've ready put this above The Big Bang Theory as my number 2 show behind Brooklyn 99.

Easily the best episode of the series thus far. So many little touches, I was laughing so hard my sides hurt.

My kids don't get the references to all the 80's stuff but still love it. I think it's the best comedy on regular tv right now.
So much better than the predictable stereotyped drivel that is most comedies.
