Re: Netflix Instant Watch Recommendations
Watched Season 2 of The Ranch over the weekend. The writing for the story lines is excellent. And it's one of the few comedy shows that actually makes me laugh. It's not ROFL-level comedy, but it keeps things light while the story of the lives in that small Colorado town develops.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Really? I gave the first episode a shot, but could only make it to the halfway point before bailing. Does it get substantially better past the first episode? Or is this just a case of different strokes for different folks?

Re: Netflix Instant Watch Recommendations
If you can't stand Kutcher and Masterson, don't bother, as they are both themselves, and you know their shtick from That 70s Show, which has not changed appreciably.
But if you can, there's some deep writing about Kutcher trying to salvage his relationships with his HS ex, his father, and brother. And San Elliott is on point. I think it was the second episode of S2 that really brings it home that he's not just cast as a cantankerous asshole for the one-note jokes.
It almost makes we want to go back and look at Kutcher's run on Two and a Half Men, but I'm sure I can quash that feeling pretty easily.

Sam Elliot is an acting legend, as far as I'm concerned. He was the sole reason I decided to give the show a try.

Episodes 3 and 5 I recall being pretty good, with some good Sam elements.

An Australian mini series called Glitch is up. Six people crawl out of their graves and can't remember at first that they died. I know there have been a metric ton of shows with the exact same damn story the last 3 years or so, but i''m really enjoying this one so far.

I've been watching those on Amazon lately. Voice acting is all over the place along with the writing at times, but it definitely holds up pretty well and tells a good sci fi story. Way ahead of it's time in that regard when you compare it to the general quality of cartoons at the time.Max Peck wrote:Squee! All 85 episodes of Robotech materialized on Netflix Canada this week. Time for a jaunt to 1985...
I also watched a new Netflix movie over the weekend called Siege at Jadotville. Kind of a cold war update of Zulu set in 1960 with Irish UN peacekeepers holding off Congolese rebels and European mercenaries. Nothing mind blowing, but a good, old fashioned action movie.

Sing Street. Watch it. If you're not wearing a goofy ass grin throughout most of the film, you're not human. The music alone is worth the price of admission. The sweet and funny story and outstanding acting just seal the deal.

Was happy to see Hero, one of my favorite kung fu films, on Netflix. Until I looked for the subtitles. No subtitles. Only closed captioning. I really don't need to constantly see "Intense music playing" every 10 seconds. Disappointed in Netflix.

Eddie The Eagle, the story about Eddie "The Eagle" Edward, Britain's ski jumper who went on to compete at the 1988 winter olympics in Calgary. Funny, sweet and inspirational, this movie feels like a spiritual successor to Cool Runnings. Heck, there's even a nod to the Jamaican Bobsled team. This movie soars.

Get Ready To Turn Off Bravo, Because Netflix Is Adding 20 Unscripted Shows Next Year
With the extraordinary success of “Stranger Things,” the buzz around “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” and oh, the fact that you can now watch Netflix anywhere without internet, it’s safe to say the streaming service is having a pretty good year.
Lucky for viewers, Netflix’s plan for 2017 is as ambitious as ever. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix Content Chief Ted Sarandos revealed Monday that the company would spend $6 billion on new programming next year, resulting in 1,000 hours of original programming and 20 unscripted shows.

That's referring to the ability to download shows and watch them later and right now that only works for Netflix originals (mentioned in case someone was banking on being able to do it with everything).... the fact that you can now watch Netflix anywhere without internet,

The Verge
It’s not just for Netflix’s own original content: full runs of major network TV series and popular movies are available to download, too, although it doesn’t include the entirety of the streaming service’s catalog.

I watched a couple of episodes of Crazyheads. The first episode because I was just looking for something to fall asleep to, but I stuck with it because it's actually pretty funny. It's like a raunchy version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actress that plays Raquel has fantastic comic timing.

It's raunchy in a potty mouth way, not a sexy way though.
Both lead actresses are actually pretty funny. The blonde actress was actually part of the Downton Abbey cast, which I find funny given what you hear coming out of people's mouths on Crazyhead.

Re: Netflix Instant Watch Recommendations
I just finished season 1 (it's only three episodes) and after the first one I wasn't sold. Then I watched the second one and thought it was an interesting take on what the future might look like, but still wasn't 100% into the idea. Watched the third one last night ("The Entire History of You") and thought it was some of the best stand alone sci-fi I've seen on TV in a long time. Not only a great story idea but a really crafty plot element. It's not unpredictable, but seeing how it all unfolds is still pretty cool and it felt like it could be something that really might happen some day.Chaz wrote:Black Mirror is some of the best TV I've seen in a while. Anyway, if you're looking for something to binge-watch during vacation, I'm giving it a thumbs up - and I'm going to continue to the rest of them.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

If you like period dramas like The Tudors and The Borgias check out Medici: Masters of Florence. It has Ned Stark's kid as Cosimo Medici...and a hilariously miscast Dustin Hoffman as his father. Not great, but fun.

The political maneuvering and intrigue are there, but not as nuanced or deep as I'd like. Wolf Hall has ruined me, I fear.
Still, I watched it all over the course of a week, so it was enjoyable.

My family and I were sucked into The Crown which was quite entertaining with an award winning, in my opinion, performance by John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

Re: Netflix Instant Watch Recommendations
So the new series Travelers popped up on Netflix last night. Got hooked into it for the first 4 episodes. Overall am enjoying it quite a bit. Basic synopsis is this: People from the future are sent back from the future to inhabit people's bodies in modern times. These folks mission is to prevent disasters and goal is to prevent events that cause problems for the future.
Pretty good characters so far. Set in modern times; I think Washington State. Overall pretty good and liking it.
I'll just leave it at that.

Oh my God. Stranger Things is so good. It is so authentically 1983 its unreal. We got Netflix on January 1st and this series alone is worth it. If you are 45 or older and like Sci-Fi or played D&D you will get something out of it.
End of line

One day at a Time reboot. Cuban American family, Mom is a vet served in Afghanistan with a teen daughter and pre-teen son. Mom lives with her (Rita Moreno) and they have a Schnieder. I'm made it to episode 8 and I'm enjoying it. This is a pretty good sit-com that deals with some very touchy subject. Depending on the age of your child you might want to watch this with them due to some of the subject matter
