Well, it isn't like Canadians would appreciate the "Canadian" accents anyway. :coffee:

This documentary had a big impact on my wife, to the point where it made her cry. She is not like that normally, and both of us were surprised at her reaction.

Ever since then she has been on a tear, tossing out old junk. I'm fine with it, since everything she has gotten rid of is old and hasn't been used in at least a year.

It really is a good eye opener. We've considered downsizing a bit, once our son graduates from high school in a few years.

Not going the tiny house route, but we'd definitely consider something more modest, for sure.

Don't know if it's been mentioned earlier in this thread, but.....

Bob Ross and The Joys of Painting!!!!!!!

I grew up watching Bob create those "happy" little trees!!! This guy was a magician and luckily, his shows still hold up well after all these years.

Additionally, my 14 year old son loves watching as well. It never ceases to amaze me what the guy could do with a 2" brush and blade.

In Order of Disappearance with the great Stellan Skarsgard. A father in Norway goes after the drug syndicate that killed his son. The film is thoughtful, deep and poignant...but still has quite a bit of action and gallows humor. The very last death in the film is comedy gold.

Thanks for the recommendation. Enjoyed it. My only complaint is that being a foreign language film I can't multitask because I am constantly having to read the subtitles.

I never enjoy dubbed films. The disconnect between the actor and the voice always distracts me. However, you'll get your chance for an English language version, as I believe the original director has signed on for an American remake. You can take a book to a theater when it debuts.

I can see this working as an American remake. Am I allowed to text, play Clash of Clans, check email, and browse IMDB in the theater?

Is Clash of Clans a thing? I've seen the star studded commercials, but I just assumed it was a money grab and not a real game.

I am frugal and have a lot of patience. Although the game is designed to drag things out and get you to spend money I have played it for 2 years without spending anything.

Oh god, I also hate dubbed movies. You should hear some of the English movies dubbed into French. My Mom watches a lot of them and the voices are horrible. There's something to be said about the purity of the original performances in their original languages. Years ago, there was a funny sweet French movie set in the Canadian maritimes. It was hilarious. Just about perfect as far as performances go. There was a certain innocence, joy, and charm shining through them. Then they deemed it successful enough to remake it as an English language movie starring Gordon Pinsent. I watched it out of curiosity seeing I loved the original, and it didn't even come close to capturing what made the original great. Just felt way too polished, lacking the heart of original.

Spoiler:
The Count, after listening to his ex wife yell and nag the whole movie, punches her in the jaw. Would they dare to put that in an American version? When he knocked her out I could only think of Chris Rock's line about O.J. Simpson killing his wife: I don't condone it, but I understand it.

As long as they keep that seemingly random, hilarious final death, I'm good. Well, that and the intelligent script.

p.s. I found the IMDb preliminary site for the remake. No mention of the director yet...but they do attach Liam Neeson. Jeebus, can we get one damn movie about a vengeful father that DOESNT cast Neeson in the lead? A large point of the damn movie is that Skarsgard is a pretty ordinary schlub.

But ever since Taken, he's synonymous with gruff badass. He even played off that on the fantastically funny Ricky Gervais series Life's too Short.

I tried with White Rabbit Project, but I failed. Or it failed me. I love Mythbuster's "B" cast, but this show takes all that was great about them and screws it up. I'm on the third show, which is about crazy WWII weapons, and the first several minutes is actors playing some stupid sketch. I don't care about that. I want to see the three amigos building stuff and working together and interacting with each other. But instead of that, it puts them in some dumb sort of competition to judge what method of the day is arbitrarily the best. There's little interaction and not much building. It's too produced.

I am disappoint.

Yeah, agreed. I had high hopes for it, but it feels like the wrong format for them. It feels more like one of those cheap top-10 countdown shows rather than any fulfilling content. I didn't watch it beyond the initial episode. I know Netflix is only the distributor, but I really wish they'd have more say in the direction. I mean, shit, a show with 3 of the people from Mythbusters, and this is the best they could come up with? Meanwhile, apparently the Mythbusters spinoff isn't faring any better.

Stumbled across something new to me: Plane Resurrection. First episode was about Bill Hammond and the P-51 Mustang he rebuilt almost completely from scratch using original techniques and tools for the assembly. This after having to manufacture a ton of the parts himself and put in almost 30k rivets by hand - AND a "zero hours" rebuild of the Merlin engine where again he had to make parts for it. Sheesh. He even took up the 70yo pilot who's plane he based it on, William Price and his "Janie".

Sad to find this when looking for details this morning:

Passenger killed and pilot badly injured as wartime fighter plane crashes

Norfolk crash pilot was Netflix Plane Resurrection presenter Maurice Hammond

My wife and I watched all of the white rabbit project. The format and scripted moments were all terrible, but it still had some cool shit in there.

Black Mirror
I am making my way through season 3. So the episode "Shut Up and Dance" has the supposedly computer nerd making these mistakes:

1) Doesn't have his laptop locked against family members. Not only can his sister use the laptop, but she is able to install shady software "that allows you to watch free movies". This is pretty basic Windows account setup stuff.

2) In order to delete the potential malware he does a google search for a malware cleaner. He then clicks on the first one he finds, and immediately downloads and installs it from their website.
a. How does he not already have malware protection on his computer?
b. How does he not know the name of reputable programs (e.g., Spybot)?
c. Why would you trust a random website you found on Google without researching it first at a place like cnet.com?

3) Every laptop I own has a sticky note covering the webcam. Old school basic security measures still work.

4)
Spoiler:
When he gets notified, take a serious consideration about how to respond. Yes, there would be public embarrassment if the video is shown to all of his contacts, but to accept their demands puts you on an endless path of extortion. Who knows what that will end up costing you.

tlr's been raving about Black Mirror but I wanted to get caught up on House of Cards before I started something else.

I just watched the first episode. That was.........different. Is that pretty much the tone throughout?

Yes. It's a very dark political satire. I thought the second season was the best (after a rocky start), but the first season really sets the table for everything to come.

That is the tone in the sense that most episodes are dark satires of the near future. Not the tone in the sense of, uh, the shocking parts. That seemed more like a first episode, need-everyone-to-notice-us, sort of deal.

The reprieve you get with San Junipero was welcomed. And dare I say the best episode of any...

Hands of Stone
An interesting biopic of Roberto Duran.

:coffee: Netflix is getting rid of Buffy, Angel, Arrested Development and more in April
If you use Netflix primarily to watch TV shows, you may want to binge as much of it as you can right now.

Netflix released the list of titles coming to and leaving the service next month, and while Polygon will compile those lists as we do every month, we thought it was especially important to point this out.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Arrested Development, Firefly, Ally McBeal, The X-Files, Roswell and House are the bigger, more notable shows being tossed aside in April. Every single season from each show will no longer be available to stream, with the exception of Arrested Development’s fourth season, which will remain due to it being a Netflix exclusive.

Netflix hasn’t said why its getting rid of the shows, which mostly belong to Fox, but Polygon has reached out for comment. Netflix’s chief of content, Ted Sarandos, has previously said the company’s goal is to have at least 50 percent of the content on the service be exclusive to Netflix. The company has invested more than $6 billion into developing new series and licensing adored properties — like Arrested Development — but it appears other shows may disappear as a result.

Each of the aforementioned series will no longer be available to stream as of April 1. A full list of what’s coming to and leaving Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and HBO Now will be compiled and published on Polygon as well.

Ain't nobody got time for that
