Yeah, the fact that we haven't heard that the center core landed implies it's highly likely to have been lost.
Still, though. This is a huge success as far as test missions go. Yesterday Musk was saying he'd be reasonably happy if the thing got far enough to not damage the launch pad before something went wrong. Successful parking orbit for the payload, plus 2 (maybe 3) booster recoveries? Awesome.
Now we wait around 5 hours for the coast proof-of-capability to complete before the final burn to send the Roadster on its way to the Hohmann transfer.

I don't know... Earth looks pretty flat in those pictures.
This was the first launch I have watched since challenger when I was in high school. It looked just like Kerbal Space Program, but with less spinning and screaming!
Odds that David Bowie's corpse was is in that space suit?

The Falcon Heavy launch would place the Roadster into a heliocentric orbit, meaning that like the planets and comets and so on, it will be orbiting the sun. More specifically, the Muskmobile will go into a type of heliocentric orbit called Trans-Mars injection, which it is the easiest and least energy-intensive way to move objects back and forth between Earth and Mars.
The orbit will bring the roadster "close" to earth and mars every couple of years, but it's not going to either place (at least not intentionally).

I love how he talked about the center booster. Said it didn't have enough ignition fuel to light the engines to slow it down for landing. The center lit but the 2 outside ones did not so it hit the water at about 300 mph and took out 2 engines on the drone ship lol. Then he just laughed it off and said he hopes theres some video of it because that would be cool and he'd post it up for us to see. I like this guy more and more.
Kinda weird though as on the two side boosters you can see just how much flame there is from the center before the two sides light and you'd think that would spark the other two.

I know the FH is awesome, and the visuals were amazing, but... you kind of want your spaceship to go where you intended, don't you? Isn't that the point of rocket science?
I'm not sure I'd want to be Musk's astronaut before this part gets worked out.

Since he considered clearing the launch pad as a 50/50 proposition. I think he's comfortable considering it a success. Also, two boosters landing simultaneously is maybe the coolest shit ever. Living in science fiction.

Also, exceeding the intended orbit was apparently intentional.
The core booster crashing wasn't great, but it's an older rev (block 4) that they weren't going to reuse anyway. All future Falcon 9 launches will be block 5.
Given that they weren't sure the FH would clear the pad without doing damage that'd take 6 months to repair, I'd say getting the launch off without a hitch, recovering 2 boosters, and having the payload reach interplanetary orbit counts as a success. As Isg said, this was a test mission to work things out. They worked some things out.

My mind is still blown by the near simultaneous landing. Even with the loss of the center booster I'd say it was a resounding success.

In his press conference, Musk said you can tell it's real because the pictures are crappy. Colors look wrong when there's no air to scatter light. "If we'd used cg, it would look a lot better."

For a guy that stamped Don't Panic on the car, a copy of Hitchhikers and a towel in the glove box, no way that symbolism wasn't intentional. He also learned programming on a Vic-20 in the early 80s. He's like one of us, just with a few billion $ more and a bit more ambition.
