Big Marvel info dump today. Most was somewhat guessable (Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther/an Inhumans movie in the works), but I felt the announcement of a Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel movie to be a pleasant surprise:

Awesome. Hope they find room for some Kamala Khan action as well.

Why are they calling it Captain Marvel instead of Mrs Marvel? Cap is a male. Is this another femnazi movie?

Less than two minutes of research shows that Captain Marvel, by that name, has alternately been both a male and a female character off and on for thirty years.

I won't dig into the 'femnazi' bit.

Never seen Shazam as a female. Bet they never make a male Isis.

Umm, there are a probably quite a few women in the military who would punch you in the nuts if you called them Mrs. instead of their rank, captain.

Digging in to it, there have been seven people who were Cpatain Marvel. Three were women.

This is a Marvel movie about a Marvel character that has nothing to do with Shazam. The Shazam movie will be named Shazam, as DC retired the 'Captain Marvel' name for that character years ago - for obvious reasons.

Shazam conceals his secret identity as a mild-mannered US Marine, even from his closest friend, Sargent Carter...

I was born without one. Really. I see everything that is said in the most literal possible way. I am also immune to metaphor.

Man, Marvel is doing a great job of securing the big guns for its movies these days. Larson just won an Oscar -- she probably has her pick of projects right now. Also, her Twitter bio identifies her as "Scientific American Subscriber," which immediately makes me love her.

I've liked her in what I've seen so far, and she certainly seems like a good fit for the character. I think it's a great choice.

That's why I keep thinking Capt Marvel was a male when I saw him. He was Shazam. Had a television show about him too.
Odd the way DC and Marvel has twisted this to get what we have today.

It's been a mess for decades. Technically, the Shazam Captain Marvel was first by almost 30 years, but it wasn't a DC character. He was owned by Fawcett Comics. He was huge during WWII, and everybody knew him as Captain Marvel. They published him until the early 50s, then stopped during the post-war era when superhero comics essentially died. The character was no more. Then in the late 60s, some 15 years later, Marvel Comics puts out their Captain Marvel. If they knew about the short lived Fawcett character is anyone's guess. In any case, Marvel copyrighted the name. Then, about 5 years later, DC got the rights to the characters from Fawcett. They published, but the only time they tried to use 'Captain Marvel', Marvel threatened to sue. While DC's character was technically named Captain Marvel, they almost never referred to him by name. Eventually enough people recognized him as 'Shazam' (the magic word that activates his powers) that DC officially changed his name.

(And yes, silver age Shazam! is one of the comics I collect, after I was given a significant run of them by a friend.)

I grew up on the Shazam / Isis hour or whatever in the 70s. Fun stuff for a kid in the 70s.

While Captain Marvel/Captain Marvel is just a case of people dancing around licenses without any real intent, there is another story in there. The original Marvel Captain Marvel was a guy. Mar-Vell, I believe (the spelling is likely wrong.) When they created a female Captain Marvel, they named her Carol Danvers. It isn't a coincidence that Supergirl's well-known alter-ego had been Kara Danvers for many years at that point. Whether it was a mean spirited poke in the ribs, a Slade Wilson/Wade Wilson joke, or a tribute nobody's quite sure.

Confusing matters further, there was an entirely different Captain Marvel after Mar-vell and before Carol Danvers.
Captain Marvel succumbed to cancer in one of Marvel’s first ever graphic novels, The Death of Captain Marvel, in 1982. However, the company still needed to use his name to maintain control: step forward Monica Rambeau.

Although Monica was made by her creators Roger Stern and John Romita, Jr. to be the new Captain Marvel—and relatively rare at the time, as a black female superhero—Marvel never really intended to have her star in her own series as Mar-Vell did. She was essentially an entirely new hero to boot: she had no connections to Mar-Vell, and even her powers to manipulate and transform into any form of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum were nothing like Mar-Vell’s own.

Looking good. There are some fun minor spoilers in the EW photo gallery (minor in the sense of showing characters, not giving away plot points).
Spoiler:
Monica Maria Rambeau!

Skrulls!

Young Ronan the Accuser!

Young Nick Fury! WITH TWO EYES!!

I thought that one guy's name was Mentor. It gave the show an extra sci-fi feel with a character having an alien sounding name like Mentor.

FINALLY they made a Marvel movie where the hero punches an old lady in the face. I've only been writing to Marvel suggesting that for a decade.

I also like how the trailer prominently features a Blockbuster. I think they narrowly decided on that instead of having a giant billboard that says "THIS IS THE 1990s!"
