El Guapo wrote:My understanding is that when Episode IV was in the theatre, the scroll just labeled it "Star Wars". Lucas changed it to A New Hope later (though still a long time ago at this point).
This is indeed what happened. He also claims that he always had a 9-episode concept for the series, though the original trilogy ended up encompassing what he thought would become episodes 4-9. It's likely that he was forced to not refer to an episode in the title since it would cause confusion with the audience.
Insert witty comment here.

I believe "Episode IV: A New Hope" was added to the crawl for the theatrical re-release (after TESB).

When I had the first novelization of the movie when I was a kid, I called a couple of bookstores asking if they knew anything about The Journal of the Whills.

Thats very cool.

Just wanted to add that I saw Felicity Jones on Kinnel and she is ridiculously hot. And then she starts talking and ups the hotness even more.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

I really am trying to get excited about this one. It's not that I've seen anything I didn't like, I just haven't loved anything Star Wars in decades. Hopefully this reignites the passion.

Same here. Woo! Of course that means I have to go see it twice because my kids want to see it too, but I don't think that will be a problem.

Tix bought!

I waited longer than I should have, but we have good reserved seats on Sunday of the opening weekend. I'll be ignoring this thread for spoilers' sake during the first couple of days (or weeks, since apparently Norwegians get to see it a month early or something).

While reviews are still embargoed, reaction from the premier seems to be extremely positive.

Kevin Smith seemed to like it.
Holy Sith! Rogue One is unbelievably wonderful! No lie: it is Empire Strikes Back great! An excellent chapter in the Star Wars universe! LOTS of breathtaking moments and tie-ins to the Saga. But you are not prepared for how fucking epic Darth Vader is in this movie. You will flat-out squeal through the last act of Rogue One and the final 10 minutes will show you something you've never seen before that you never knew how much you wanted to see in the first place. Incredible flick! I can't wait to see it again! More of this in the world, less of everything else!

Until when? I keep checking Rotten Tomatoes to see some kind of score from critic screenings, but still nothing. Did they do that with TFA as well? Don't remember.

In exactly two days, to the minute, I'm sitting in the theater with the movie about to start. Can't wait. :)

For Ep VII they gave us a small gift card for concessions. No such luck this year so I suspect the popcorn reserves are safe.

I promised my son that we would wait until his birthday on the 22nd to see it with the whole family.

See, you only promised to wait "to see it with the whole family" - i.e., that you and the whole family would not see it before the 22nd. You didn't say that you would wait to see it individually.

Reviews coming in, not quite as positive as I was hoping for. 78% right now, with even most of the positive reviews noting major flaws, especially in character development.

This agrees with what I've been reading, however I noted that every review I read ultimately had a blast watching the film. So my read on the consensus thus far is that it's flawed but fun and overall well done.

I can live with that, I guess. The warning signs of Bad Star Wars are cutesy goofiness (Ewoks, Jar Jar, Podracing) and Hayden Christensen.

This is a pending issue for me, since my daughter desperately wants to go see this. I'll have to pre-screen it for sure.

Just saw that.

Still, it (the review) isn't an utter thrashing. A. O. Scott seems tired of the franchise, and that's his right.

[Review spoilers, not story spoilers, follow:]
Spoiler:
His worst criticisms are that the dialogue is very weak and the movie lacks any ambition to do more than push forward the usual Star Wars cliches. He calls it "mediocre," but (knowing Scott's willingness to slaughter when he needs to) that's not the same thing as "bad." He does say the cast is wonderful.

It sounds like Rogue One is no Episode VII, but it's still much better than the prequels. It sounds like it will satisfy SW fans but not inspire them.
I saw A. O. Scott on his recent book tour, and I came away liking him.

If that's what we get, I can live with it. I still hold some hope for more given Kevin Smith's ebullientedness.

I read the NYT review as well. I usually trust A.O. Scott's reviews; I guess I'll find out this weekend if I agree.

But from glancing at other reviews, even the positive ones seem to indicate that this is a pretty by-the-numbers movie. I guess that perhaps shouldn't be too surprising considering it is the first live action SW movie outside of the main story. It'll be interesting to find out what, if anything, got changed when they went back for reshoots.

Definitely. The post-mortem analysis will be cool to know.

Is there any word out there about what direction the movie took in the reshoots? Did it become "safer"? Did they kludge in extra fan service?
