Theres more and more stuff coming out about this film so thought it needed its own thread instead of in the 7 thread.

Re: Star Wars 2016 standalone move

Variety
Disney and Lucasfilm have tapped Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones to star in the “Star Wars” standalone movie from director Gareth Edwards.

Jones was one of several actresses to have met for the role along with Rooney Mara and Tatiana Maslany.
...
It’s unclear how both spinoffs will play into the upcoming seventh chapter “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” if at all. Speculation has Edwards and Trank’s movies focusing on the early days of original characters Princess Leia and Han Solo.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Daehawk, change the thread title!
The film, which is titled Rogue One, has already begun casting and its first star—Oscar nominated actress Felicty Jones—was announced in conjunction with the spin-off.

Ben Mendelsohn Reportedly Eyed for Star Wars: Rogue One
So Felicity Jones and Ben Mendelsohn.
Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, Killing Them Softly) is up for a role in Star Wars: Rogue One. It is not clear what role that may be and Disney had no comment.

Trank out as director for the second film.
The announcement was made on StarWars.com, with Trank offering a statement on his departure from the highly anticipated film.

“After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all.”

Lucasfilm VP of Development Kiri Hart added, “It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh. We are grateful for the energy and love of Star Wars that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.”
Oh, and that second film? Boba Fett's origin story.

Remember this is Disney. Expect Princess Leia to break out into song every 10 minutes.

I dunno. There have been remarkably few catchy show tunes in the Marvel movies and TV shows.

Everyone already knows that the problematic Josh Trank was already removed from what was to be his Star Wars anthology several months back. Due to his on set antics and destructive tendencies, he was not going to be allowed anywhere near a Disney/Lucasfilm production. With that said, it's coming out today that the anthology he was going to be working on has been put on hold while Lucasfilm continues to churn out the new trilogy and the spin-off Rogue Squadron franchise.
Den of Geek
A few weeks ago, it was confirmed that Jump Street and The LEGO Movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord were to direct the second planned Star Wars Anthology movie, which will deal with a younger Han Solo. That's slotted in for release in 2018, and in turn it's taken the place of the Boba Fett origins films, that Josh Trank was originally mooted to direct.
...
But still, the Boba Fett film is still an active project. Lucasfilm has pushed it back until 2020 at the earliest though. "It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell," Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy told Entertainment Weekly.

I read the Entertainment Weekly article on the troubled Fantastic Four movie, and I'm really glad Trank got scuttled. He sounds like a colossal asshole.

Why do I keep reading LucasFilm for all this Star Wars stuff? Didn't they give up all SW forever?

Lucasfilm didn't sell Star Wars to Disney. Lucasfilm sold Lucasfilm to Disney.

It's the same reason why you've seen Marvel's Avengers and not Disney's Avengers.

Add one Mads Mikkelson.
Spoiler:
"It is a very important role, as much I can say," Mikkelsen said (via StarWars7News.com and /Film), adding, "No, my character is actually not a bad guy, and then I can not say more. I can also say that the movie will be shot in Iceland and England. And the filming will last for three months."

The Bothans were famously credited with stealing the plans to the second Death Star during the Battle of Korriban, enabling the Rebel Alliance to destroy the battlestation.

Strange..I even looked it up and from reading I pinged it as they were killed by Palpatine after the first DS was destroyed. Oh Well. I still see Princess in my head saying the line for some reason. And i think it was Mon Mothma instead. Must not be alone as other people online bitch that people get it wrong still haha.

EW
“Filming of Rogue One is virtually completed and we absolutely love what we’ve seen so far,” he said, of the heist story about Rebel plans to steal the blueprints for the original Death Star. (The film, directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards, will be released Dec. 16.) “This is the first of a set of planned stand-alone stories and we’re already in preproduction on our next one, for release in May of 2018.”

That one would be the announced “young Han Solo” movie, which The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are making, based on a script by Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan. While Disney has been shifting Star Wars release dates from spring to the winter holidays, Iger’s announcement that young Han Solo would remain in May, at least for now, was a surprise.

The trailer is up and looks absolutely amazing. Less space combat than I was anticipating based on the title (which I had figured tied into Rogue Squadron somehow, but apparently not), but it sure looks great.

At this point the new Star Wars films need SOME space combat. Amazingly Im just not very interested in this yet. Maybe later on. Not digging yet another tough bitchy girl lead after Mad Max.

So we need to go back to all the older films and ask ourselves "What facilitated this event?" and then Disney will make a movie to explain it.

It does look good by itself, though. I won't mind a string of movies all set in the same universe but largely unrelated to each other. You get more of the same delicious flavor without needing to make everything fit perfectly, jarring transition or not.

I was the opposite. I thought seeing him jarred me out of it being Star Wars.

Paingod - I agree with having single movies not related to each other . I like that idea. That way its a movie and not a big set up for the next one.

YK - Seeing the AT-ATs again we a warm fuzzy to me as well.

tru1cy - Ive asked that since the start. I guess too many died doing 'something' :)

That's been my biggest complaint about the new movies. There's so much Star Wars stuff to explore and they can't seem to get away from the old characters/story. I'm sure the next standalone movie will be about something else that was mentioned in one of the old movies instead of some cool ass story that takes place 1,000 years before that with characters that don't somehow tie back to Boba Fett.

The next is young Han Solo.

Id love a simple full Empire side movie with them as the good guys view. I want to see some of the behind the scenes of day to day of the Empire. Tie training, peacekeeping, assault.....anything. My favorite Star Wars sim game is Tie Fighter. Im tired of the Rebels and their side of their terrorist activities :)

Hell give me Vader on his flagship where he is in some remote sector of space waging a military campaign against someone. No rebels need involved even. Or better yet show me Thrawn at his height. Not getting killed but being the winner of something.

It's just a trailer but I'm way more hyped about this than I was The Force Awakens. This doesn't feel like MotS but rather like an exciting story from the universe I loved as a child. That trailer felt a lot more like Star Wars than the TFA trailers did. It felt right for the first time in, what, 30 years.

In fairness, after seeing TFA, I was meh, but even so meh was a huge step up from I, II, and III.

I'm actually down with this.

I don't remember any prequels. The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars movie made since the early 1980s, as far as I can recall. Why, Star Wars prequels would be as preposterous as, say, a Godfather Part 3 or something similarly ludicrous. The very idea.
