Cape Weather is going to update the launch team in about five minutes about the last constraint, which is the field mil reading. This is the potential electrical charge in the atmosphere near the launch site. Launching into a bad field mil situation could cause lightning to form and hit the vehicle.

Also we've used rockets for 60 or 70 years now. They seem so primitive and I know they are unsafe. In the same time frame of 70 years we went from no flight to planes to jets to space rockets. Yet here are are still on rockets with explosive liquids in them.
? Have you not seen Space X rockets land back on a launching pad, on the ocean, at night? Quite a big step up from good ole V rockets.

Initial report from Cape Weather says one reading is still too high. Looks like unless something radical happens, we will be scrubbing for weather in a couple of minutes.

Starship SN4 Explosion During Static Fire Test May 29 2020

Starship Sn4 suffered a RUD - Rapid Unintended Disassembly.

NBD, fail fast and iterate, etc. But were I running the show, maybe I'd avoid the optics of a RUD the night before an astronaut launch and give my folks the weekend off...

Well, you learn more from failure than from success and the Starship program is still in development, so the occasional RUD is part of the process.

Indeed, hence my mention of the optics *this weekend* specifically. I'm totally a fan of SpaceX's methods. They've already got SN5, 6, and 7 in various stages of build. The RUD itself is fine.

Speaking of the upcoming launch, our local officials estimated that the crowd that attended the scrubbed attempt on Wednesday was about 150,000. They estimated that if it wasn't for Covid-19, we might have seen 400,000. Sheesh!

Officials also estimate that tomorrow (Saturday) we'll see a bigger crowd than Wednesday. They are making some changes to traffic routing, but ultimately it is going to be a real mess, again. Thank goodness I live close enough to watch the launch from my house :pop:

Craziness. I'd have driven down from CO if not for the COVID crap. Really hoping to catch the next one, though it may be too soon, as well.

Well, although there is the mystic of a manned launch, a Falcon launch looks and sounds the same whether manned or unmanned.

With Falcon it seems 50/50 if it all goes well or not. I hope so for their sake.

Yeah, a 98% success rate really sounds like tempting fate abnormally for a space launch...

If you mean because the weather is 50/50 for today, then your wording is really confusing.

I was thinking of the failed engine returns specifically....which in retrospect has nothing to do with crew. I made it confusing and didn't mean to.

About two hours before launch and we have showers in the area already, but so far no thunder or lighting. Yesterday it was beautiful all afternoon

Yeah, they missed it by 10 min on Wed. Interestingly, Wed the weather was red all the way up till T+10, while today it's been green all morning but may be red at launch.

And Ill repost the Twitch one for the heck of it.

Forty minutes before launch and weather is looking better. To my west, where the weather is coming from and over to the Cape, it is clearing. Unless we get a really unlucky pop-up storm, it should be nice by T-0 at the pad.

The astronaut in the feed mentioned that Bob and Doug (still weird to just hear first names) are probably going through what to do with problems and using the touch screens. Touch screens?? What happens with a full on power drop? Are there no switches?

Congrats everyone!

I was a little surprise they use touch screens. I figured they'd shake apart and have glass all over. As I recall the Apollo astronauts said they thought they were going to shake apart. I guess it doesn't shake like the old rockets.

The inside of their capsule finally actually looks like a sci fi starship.

That landed booster makes it appear like a little thing but thats the huge first stage sitting there. Hard to grasp that.

Still with the cutting out at critical moments of stuff happening and the way the HD makes it all look it looks fake as hell lol.

Yup, everything worked fine so far. As is my habit, although I could have run outside to watch the ascent live, I prefer to use the internet and monitor everything that is going on with the spacecraft and booster.

The inside of the spacecraft looks too bare. Needs more switches and lights

So now it's a 19-hour ride to the ISS.

I guess most of that time is rising to the ISS's altitude and perfectly matching orbit. Both with circle the earth a dozen times before they connect.
