Call and tell them it's shutting off and over heating. They'll ask if you have downloaded any new apps and if you've rebooted, cleared cache, etc.

I actually did do this and it didn't help. I told them I had and they just honored the defective device.

Also, I tried talking to customer support several times throughout the day and was put on hold for an hour each time before I hung up out of frustration. I finally got a quick response by using the chat, built into the phones settings. Took about 20 minutes and I had the replacement ordered.

They hid behind the warranty and wouldn't give me a new phone. I told them that good companies replace products when there's a known manufacturing defect. I asked the person to escalate the issue to their supervisor who will be contacting me through email, so we'll see what happens.

Wow, that's surprising.

Let's see if they will upgrade you. Researching the web shows they are giving everyone a Pixel.

So a supervisor has moved the request on to the 'Advanced support team'.

I was told they would honor the defective phone with a replacement and when I got the email, it showed a Pixel for the replacement.

Hopefully, you'll get the same.

FWIW, I've always used the chat support from a PC and have received a replacement 2 of 2 times (bit loop and broken fingerprint sensor). Not a pixel but a 5x for a 5x.

If you do it from your phone, you can't go though the motions to narrow it down to hardware.

I could never get through on the phone and chat had everything done and a replacement in place in <30 minutes.

That's odd. They told me on the spot I was getting a replacement and a couple hours later I got an email telling me it was a Pixel XL.

Nope. I may have to just turn it in for the new cheap phone unless I hear from the AG before the promotion is over.

So I threw in the towel, got $151 trade in for the phone which is probably more than I could have gotten for it on Ebay, being that I would list it with all the issues mentioned. I get another $50 fi credit and I paid for the stupid $5 a month extra warranty plan.

There is a federal class-action lawsuit against Google and Huawei over the defective battery issue, so you may end up getting some money back (eventually).

I haven't searched but just from reading a bunch of articles, is there any phone maker who doesn't have a class action suit against them for a phone defect?

After my happy customer experiences, my wife just had a total shitshow of an experience. Her only option is to buy a soon-to-be obsolete Pixel at full price and it will take 3 days. The Moto x4 is delayed and the Pixel 2 doesn't ship for a few weeks.

They won't even take a trade in on her Nexus 5x since it won't start so she can't wipe it (they only take them if you can factory reset).

She thinks I'm dumb for using project fi.

For me Project Fi is simpler and cheaper than any other service. Yeah their customer service wasn't good for me either. I'm praying my rapidly deteriorating 6p can make it to Nov 13 when my Pixel 2 ships.

Thanks for the solid offer but we just got a Nexus 5x from Amazon via same-day. The soonest Fi could get us anything was tomorrow, and that was if I ordered yesterday and paid for their super expedited shipping (which was free on my phone but $26 for hers).

Going to limp along on that until the Moto and Pixel 2 reviews start coming in.

The Pixel is obsolete? That's funny coming from someone who's still using a Nexus 5X. Lack of phone options is the only thing I dislike about the Fi, but I'll take my chances that the timing of something like this won't happen to me.

When you go to the trade-in page, it asks if you have reset it. If you put no, you can't proceed. We could lie I guess and they'd probably never know but for the $60 or so they're offering I'd rather take it apart myself.

I called via my wife's phone, they asked if I had reset it, I said it was bricked and couldn't get there from here.

ars technica
The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are the best Android phones you can buy, but boy does the 2 XL have a lot of display issues. In addition to graininess and a weird blue shift at certain viewing angles, the 2 XL is now experiencing burn-in on units that are just a week or two old.

Android Central was the first to report the issue, showing a picture of a Pixel 2 XL with some nasty image retention around the navigation bar. Shortly after, several other reports of burn-in started popping up, and you can add Ars' review unit to the list of affected devices. You can see the permanent navigation bar burn-in below on our two-week-old device.

In response to the complaints, Google has sent out a statement saying that it's investigating the issue:
...
Samsung is the undisputed leader in smartphone OLED panels, and the Samsung panels used on the Pixel 1, Pixel 1 XL, and Pixel 2 have mostly been issue-free. The Pixel 2 XL, however, uses an LG-made POLED display, which has proven to not be up to the standard set by Samsung. The LG V30 uses a similar panel and has lots of display issues, too.

It has been a rough few weeks for Google's hardware division. In addition to the display issues with the Pixel 2 XL, the Google Home Mini apparently shipped with a top touch surface so defective that Google had to permanently disable it. We've got to wonder: what is the quality control like over there?

Wow, what a bummer for their flagship. I had read that the LG V30 display was its weak point. The Samsung displays are awesome, so they made a bad choice with that choice.

Yeah. I'm waiting until things clear up either way for either phone at this point. So pathetic all this.

Here's the thread I started on Reddit. Lots of gnashing of teeth.

Strange clicking sounds reported in both phones.

Geezus I need a phone right away as my Nexus 6P may die any day now. Why Google why???

Edit: Apparently this doesn't happen with all phones so return it if it happens with yours. Hopefully it doesn't happen with mine; clicking sounds are the worst when you have to wear hearing aids.
