Yeah, all I need to know is that after at least a decade of moving backwards, we''re moving forwards again. That to me is exciting.

EXACTLY!!!

From the preview it didn't look at all like I *need* to know all the backstory, just that it will be richer that I know it. I mean 7 of 9 is still gonna have big boobs either way, right? And side note, she looked fantastic in that shot!

She's... aged well. Dunno if those are Borg implants however ;)

The article goes on to argue that it seems to be a show hostile to newcomers. But... honestly, it could easily be argued that the shows never were easy for newcomers to come into it. I think the movies were a little easier. I'd also argue that going backwards poses more problems than going forward as you then increase the odds of adding inconsistencies to earlier works.

New trailer. I love the rocks when he visits the lady in the desert at the trailer. Same place Kirk fought the Gorn. :)

I'm pretty psyched for this show, though I wish they had the budget to digitally create Data. I don't think androids are supposed to be that jowly, even in dreams. And I would so watch "Riker."

The idea that Data puts on weight and ages (albeit slower than humans) seems wonderful to me. Make it so.

Well, aging was never part of Soong's designs for his original Data-type androids, though he seemed to implement it in the android version of his former wife, as shown in a late series episode of TNG. Plus, the scene in this trailer heavily suggests that it is a dream, since both Data and Picard are in their TNG TV era uniforms, and unless they brought Data back through some canonical media and I missed it, he is still dead following the events of Nemesis. Now, outside of the specifics of this scene, I suppose they could "kind of" bring Data back, by making him B-4 who has incorporated more of Data's memories and mannerisms, but I don't think that this is what is happening here.

There is a trilogy of novels that brings Data back in a cool way, and then follows him and the TNG crew as they work together, and separately, to destroy a conspiracy against the Federation and save the universe.

I just learned that the showrunner for PICARD is very talented novelist Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, etc).

That's a good sign.

Shame how tv is going to paywalls. Id like to at least try Picard but no way Ill do that with a paywall in front of me. You'd think it would somehow be illegal to charge you twice like that...cable and a subscription tv service.

After being dead-set against it on principle, I might just cave and sign up for All Access now that we've made the jump to streaming. The only services I have so far are YTTV and Prime, so there's plenty of slack in the budget to add more, and I would like to watch both Picard and Discovery.

So the latest Star Trek Discovery short (a series of fantastic 10 minute shorts set in the realm of Star Trek but not always featuring familiar characters or stories) Children of Mars has a pretty significant “blink and you’ll miss it” reveal about what may be happening in Picard. If true, it’s going down a road I wasn’t expecting, and opens up some interesting story possibilities.

Just saw ep 1 of Picard and I think Patrick Stewart is a wonderful actor who gets to expand the character beyond the confines of a Starfleet captain bound by rules and military protocol. It's a real pleasure to see the compassion, humanity, and humor that he brings to Picard in retirement. It's going to be fun watching him fly across the cosmos in a cool looking old-school Romulan Bird of Prey. Near the end of the episode the music subtly weaved in a theme from one of the original Star Trek episodes which was a nice touch and fitting for the scene. The lens flare was kind of much which made me laugh more than annoyed me but we've come a long way from late 20th century filming and it was quite nice to watch from the Picard Vineyard scenes to, well, that thing at the end which I won't spoil.

As for the girl in trouble:
Spoiler:
I had wondered if it was Lal and it seems in a way she was.

I watched the first two episodes...then never returned. I just didn't find it to have any of the original's wit or charm. Which is surprising since I think Jordan Peele is an amazing film maker (seriously, Us was so wildly imaginative it's ridiculous).

If you go in for Discovery, just keep in mind that almost everything that makes you think they're pissing all over Star Trek history will get "sort of" explained at the end of season 2. With the exception of the new Klingons, which they actually do a mea culpa with at the start of season 2, returning them to TNG style Klingons...well, as much as they can, considering some of the stuff they tossed in during season 1.

It's closer to TOS than TNG, but that's to be expected given that it's set right before TOS.

Definitely watch the Star Trek shorts though. They are (mostly) superb.

I agree. It was great to see Patrick Stewart on again and I thought everything he did was very much in character for Picard.

I really enjoyed Episode 1 and will be very interested to see where they take this.

About halfway though it now. I was prepared for it to be emotional, but not this emotionally powerful. This is an outstanding show that should be picking up Emmy’s left and right come awards season.

Yep, they really did a great job on this. I kind of like the fact that they spent more time on Earth visiting different locations before zooming off to wherever they go in space. It makes it feel grounded and it feels like they're doing a lot with the setting.

When he visited the Daystrom Institute, I thought of Soong and his work on the androids, and I thought it was odd that they hadn't mentioned him. Given the incident talked about, maybe they are forbidden from talking about him seeing as their work is mostly all theoretical now.
