Have you met any kids lately!?!?

JeffV's kids pulled a shiv on me the last time he brought them to Octocon. Although in their defense, it is me.

At least it's not Discovery levels of stupid. So far, my favourite episode has been the 3rd.

I'm 3 episodes in, and interested enough to keep watching. I have to say, though, that Maureen Robinson is by far the most unlikable character I've seen in show in a long time. I would not shed a tear if that overbearing bitch fell into a crevasse somewhere...

Almost agree with you. Doctor Smith was the worst for me. But when Maureen was issuing field tactical commands to her husband who was an active marine, well it took few minutes for my eyes to come down from my head . . .

The writing for Dr Smith's character is terrible. She feels two-dimensional and unable to grow beyond planning her next scheme. Really hope they expand the scope of her character next season. The worst for me was when she hit Maureen in the head in the middle of that launch sequence. She could have easily jeopardized her own chances of getting off the planet with that stupid scheme of hers. She's so selfish she can't see beyond what she wants and how it affects those around her.

I'm through episode 8 now, and really liking it. Seems to have picked up a bit though I'm with the general consensus on Smith - I can't wrap my head around her motivations. Is she just a full-on psycho that has no real motivations other than "some men just want to watch the world burn"? And Don West is becoming my favorite character - the interplay between him and Judy when making the piloting decision was hilarious (and accurate). And I like the chicken.

I liked Posey's take on Smith. She's a junkie with a criminal history, but she obviously didn't start off that way. There's some brief history of her world embedded in the episodes, but not enough to give you a clear picture. And I do believe she operates on a reactionary level only during season 1. She's out of her element and just making it to the next day alive and free is a winning situation for her.

Just finished and am looking forward to Season 2. And I love how they incorporated the original theme song - LoS was probably my absolute favorite show growing up so I'm really digging this reboot.

I just finished season 1 last week and I was pleasantly surprised, it was better than I thought it would be. Looking forward to Season 2.

I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes of season 1 a while back and as much as I enjoyed the show I could not get past Parker Posey's Dr. Smith. I wasn't a big fan of the Dr. Smith portrayal in the movie reboot a few years ago either but, you know, it was Gary Oldman so...

I guess Johnathan Harris just nailed it.

Every time she shows up my daughter yells at the screen, "I HATE her!"

Parker Posey does do a good job making her quite unlikable. Happy the show is back though.

Dr. Smith kind of had her comeuppance in the series finale of Season one so I had hoped I would a more careful and introspective character at least of the beginning of the season. Instead, she is right back to her evil ways except now she is much more menacing in her creepy, sneaky way manipulating everyone around her. In fact, she seems to relish it now. At least this season the family all seem to know she is a threat so that might make the writing better.

Not seen this show or movie but watched the original series. Always wondered why they never marooned Smith or let something kill him or killed him themselves.

I’ve liked Posey’s Smith since the beginning. She’s not evil, but she is self serving almost to the point of amorality. But even then, she still has flashes of conscience that either haunt her for her bad actions, or stop her from going too far at times.

I agree. And the last few episodes of the 2nd season do a good job showing that.

I just started watching S1 over the weekend and I'm not quite sure what to think yet. I think it's the tone that I'm having problems with. It seems to alternate between tween drama and grim. Like...the interactions/dialogue between the kids feels like it belongs on NickTeen but then you have the Dr. Smith story line which is rather dark. I do like the changes to the story and how they creatively wrote in all these changes (West, Dr. Smith, the robot) and it still fits within the core idea.

I couldn't place the actress that plays the mom (which is something I'm generally terrible at). I knew she wasn't the bassist for the Silversun Pickups (but she could be her sister) and had to resort to IMDB. I didn't remember her from Dexter, but once I saw she was Alma Garrett on Deadwood it all clicked.

Anyway, I'm going to keep watching, but I am (so far) only watching because I really don't have anything else drawing my attention.

I will say that season 2 felt more confident in its story than season 1. I particularly liked the handling of trying to define what friendship (and the resulting power dynamics) really means when the pool of options for such a thing grows to include someone/something not of your own species. I was honestly surprised at the maturity they displayed while covering that topic in season 2.

It also felt more self aware, and able to make fun of itself and the genre. Heck, they even take time to question why the hell anyone would include a self destruct button on a space ship.

Just finished the 2nd episode. I can respect people’s views on Dr. Smith and her unique world view. Maybe I just can not stand the way the actress bring a psychological slime ball too the screen. Lol. She makes my skin crawl every time she charms the Robinsons.

I started laughing when she said that as it poked fun at all the self destructing spaceships you can find in sci-fi shows.

GTK. I'm halfway thru the second season and agree on the 'flashes' comment but like a flash, they don't last very long. One telling comment she makes I enjoyed was something about the Robinson family having the love of each other to depend on and the only person she loves is... herself. As Hepcat noted, my dislike of the character is a credit to Posey's acting. And speaking of actors from other series, I had to laugh when John Robinson got to sail again and relive his days as a pirate captain.

Finished this last night. On the subject of Dr. Smith and her redemption:
Spoiler:
I was not expecting it to take that form. HOWEVER... no body, just suit bits. I can't imagine Lost in Space without that character, so assuming she somehow managed to discard it and is on one of the Jupiters?

Third season announced, but it will also be its last. Damn man, it's been one of the best looking sci-fi series anywhere, and I thought it was a big hit, but apparently the Netflix 3-season curse hit.
