Abergeldie Castle about to fall into river

Post by Daehawk »

Scotland's 450 year old Abergeldie Castle is about to be washed away due to floods. Real shame such a beautiful old castle will most likely fall. I was wondering if they couldn't dump rock and reinforce the ground or worst case take the castle apart stone by stone...but theres no time it seems. The river has washed away 60 feet of land. Hell it breaks my heart because I love these old places.

Before they had over 60 feet to the river.

More heavy rains expected. Global warming? If that was mine and it made it and I had the cash Id move the thing stone by stone and rebuild it a good ways back. Shore up that river edge too. That would cost a fortune though but it has been done before. Thats just awful though to happen.

Going to guess that the estate doesn't have a ton of money or there would have been some river work done already. Sucks to see but it's inevitable.

Historical properties in the UK are typically owned by (a) the state, (b) old noble families, or (c) J.K. Rowling. Neither the state nor the nobility have any money left for building levees.

Maybe magic can help.

Over what kind of time frame are we talking about here. Surely this isn't from one storm or even one season of storms.

And I know your name isn't surely.

Looking at the satellite view on Google Maps, which is presumably fairly recent (link), it appears to be well back from the river's edge.

They should have consulted with Nostradamus when they built it. He could have told them global warming would eventually bring down the castle.

Looks like they have been able to save it.

Glad they could save it, but that's not something that comes to mind when I hear the word castle.

At 450 years old, classic castles were already obsolete when this one was built, although Wikipedia tells me that it withstood three (short?) sieges during rebellions in the 17th and 18th centuries. Tradition says there used to be a moat.
