David Bowie dies after struggle with cancer. Seems it was kept quiet that he had it.

Only released a new album last week as well.

:(

His new album "Blackstar" was one of his best albums ever. He really closed the curtain with dignity.

Ugh wow this one is a big hit for the world not just music. I was just last week or so looking up how he injured his eye after all these years. Geez. Wow. Damn cancer.

"ground control to major tom"

My favorite song of his.

2nd would be "I'm afraid of Americans" with Trent Reznor.

This might be the hardest a celebrity death has ever hit me. I'm absolutely gutted right now.

Was listening to his new album yesterday (which is incredible) and thinking how exciting his new musical direction was going to be. Little did I know I was listening to his epitaph.

RIP Starman, and thank you for all the crazy cosmic jive. The world is a far, far less interesting place today.

RIP David Jones. Truly one of the great voices and innovators of rock. Watch his new video Blackstar if you get a chance its is disturbingly compelling.

What sad news. RIP.

My sister introduced me to Bowie when she was 15 and I was 12. I'd better give her a call today.

If you're ever sad, just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie. (shamelessly stolen from a friends FB post, but highly appropriate)

Go back and watch the video for Lazarus off the new album. You can see this all over the song and video.

I'm gonna go cry now.

Yeah, this is a bummer.

I'm happy to say I got to see him live and it was a fantastic show. The Glass Spider tour in about 1987. It was at The Silverdome and Little Richard opened. I went to the show with my Mom, which was kind of crazy at the time...

Clearly Bowie lived for his craft as he spend the last remaining months of his battle with cancer working on and getting his new album out.

This I did not expect. I remember sleeping in the back of a friemd's pickup truck in the parking lot of the The Richfield Arena outside Akron in order to get ticket to see him perform. Probably one of my top 5 favorite musicians of all time. He was a sounding board for every generation. Embracing each new musical style and incorporating it into generational albums that reflected it all back to the audiences.

We'll not see the likes of a David Bowie again. He's finally returned to Mars.

I can't say I was a huge David Bowie fan, but the news absolutely shocked me this morning. But while I was only a casual listener, I was very aware of his importance and I always respected him as an artist.

I think it's awesome that he was able to finish his last album to rave reviews and depart this world without pity. He just dropped the mic - Bowie out. We should not have expected anything less.

Yeah, I heard it just as I was turning off the TV this morning.

I was a big fan of his music and I saw him perform as an actor in the stage production of The Elephant Man. I thought he had been sick for a while and was surprised that he came out with a new album (which I suppose I should find and listen to now).

Still loved him in Labyrinth and wanted that hair in the 80's. One of my favorites will always be China Girl.

Wow. I never even heard anything about him being ill. Great performer and producer as well. Iggy Pop would not be half of what he is today without Bowie. And I loved the Stooges' fun house, which was way before Bowie collaborated.

RIP Thomas Jerome Newton. I will agree with Jeff V. if you can find a recording of him in the Elephant man, it is fantastic.

When the Blackstar video came out late last year, I was thrilled that Bowie was still making such vital music so late in his career. Now I'm saddened that there won't be more of it.

Time to curl up with a cup of tea and listen to Space Oddity, I think.

I also saw him in Elephant Man (on Broadawy) and was simply knocked out.

And speaking of knocked out, here's the greatest clip you probably have never seen. It's both awesome and hilarious at the same time.

And speaking of hilarious.........

Don't know if the David Bowie Is exhibition is still going around but if it is, it is a must see. Saw it at the MCA after the wife took the kiddo and raved about it. He was a true artist and it showcases his wide range of work beyond music.

Edit: looks like it is still going, but you'll have to go to the Netherlands this year or Japan next year to see it.

Very well said. A comment I just read on another site really resonated with me:
Just think, David Bowie knew he was dying. He knew his days were short. And what did he do? He spent his final months making you an album, his final days making sure it was put together right, and his final minutes making sure you got it. That's an act of love. Yes, David Bowie has passed on, but just remember he loved you as a fan enough to give you every single bit of effort he had left to offer this world.
Goddamn, it's dusty in here.

Joey Ramone did the same thing on his last solo album. In that context, songs like I Want to Live and his cover of What a Wonderful World were especially moving and did bring tears to my eyes...not because Joey knew he was dying as he sang the songs on the album, but my own father was on life support at that moment.

The anecdote behind that Nick Lowe cover is hilarious. I remember reading about it years ago. I still regale people with it to this day.

This news stunned and greatly saddens me. David Bowie was a personal hero to me. Music is my passion and he is responsible for more of that passion than any other artist.

RIP Mr. Bowie.

I remember when I first started working in a restaurant, we had tapes playing background music. The manager made a rule of NO BOWIE! Definitely the end of an era.

Sadness.

The university radio station I listen to has done at least five hours of Bowie today that I know about.
