Variety
Chenoweth, who played the goddess Easter on the first season of Starz’s “American Gods,” said she was “devastated” when she found out that showrunners Michael Green and Bryan Fuller were departing ahead of Season 2, which Variety reported on Nov. 29.
...
With Fuller’s departure, her position on the series is now uncertain, Chenoweth revealed. “When Bryan was the showrunner, I was coming back for several episodes, but I don’t know now,” Chenoweth explained. “It depends on who it is and if they think I add value or not.”

What is it with Fuller leaving the last few shows? The man is a goddamn genius of entertainment, so I hate to see him leave anything.

And if this does result in the great Kristin Chenoweth getting the heave ho it will be a large step down in the show's quality.

This could be devastating to the show. It seems that it really had a Fuller vibe to it, and that was part of the appeal. I'll see if they can keep it up in future seasons, but that's a real bummer.

...
Season 1 launched on April 30, 2017, so until there's an official announcement, let's say late 2018 as a best guess.
..
It's possible that any planned launch date might have to be pushed back anyway, due to the surprise departure of original American Gods showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green.
...
One notable absentee will be Gillian Anderson, who's confirmed she won't be reprising her role of Media, citing Fuller and Green's departure as the impetus behind her own exit.
...
Albrecht says ... "Neil Gaiman will be taking a more central role moving forward into a more traditional showrunner function, and we're looking for a partner for him who can ensure that the television part of this gets the appropriate attention. We're very committed to American Gods. We love the show; as I mentioned before, it did very well for us."
...
Intriguingly, Pablo Schreiber has hinted at a slightly different story structure for season 2, with standalone episodes focusing more on individual characters.

Good lord, just kill it now and don't drag this out. Really sucks as the last few episodes were spectacular.

Oh man, yes, a million times this. DO. NOT. SEEK. AMERICAN GODS.

You have been warned. It's probably got some of the most graphically explicit violent and sexual scenes I have ever seen on a television.

The bit about Neil Gaiman has been debunked by Neil himself. He stated that he already has too many irons in the fire and will not be acting as an actual showrunner. His input will be advisory and from the outside of the production level of things. Im guessing they tried to overstate his role in an attempt to slap a bandage on the gaping wound left by Fuller and Green's departure. Honestly I would be surprised if this lasts beyond the 2nd season that they have committed to and wouldn't be surprised if season 2 never happens.

Slash Film
American Gods has sacrificed another showrunner as Jesse Alexander is reportedly out at Starz series. Alexander was brought in to replace previously fired showunners Michael Green and Bryan Fuller. A new report indicates Alexander had problems with developing American Gods season 2 from the get-go, and now the entire production is in turmoil.
...
THR has an alarming new exposé on the behind-the-scenes troubles plaguing American Gods, stating that “Alexander was asked to stop working on American Gods, an adaptation of a Neil Gaiman novel, about a month ago.” The report says the word “fired” was never used, but Alexander is “no longer working on the hyper-stylized drama as a writer or showrunner, and has been asked not to sit in on editing, be involved on set or participate in any other areas of production or postproduction.” So it kind of sounds like he was fired.

THR goes on to say the production is now on “hiatus” and in “disarray.”
Alexander turned in multiple drafts of the show's season two finale, but executives at both Starz and Fremantle have rejected those scripts and are up to what sources described as a seventh draft.

Production on the drama, which is six weeks behind and recently was forced to go on a hiatus, is in disarray. Castmembers have not received copies of the script for the show's season two finale because, as one source put it, "there is no script." Another source says it’s possible the crew has received a far-from-finished version of the finale script, but whatever has been partially distributed is almost guaranteed to go through extensive changes. Instead of shooting the season finale, which should have been in production already, American Gods has been filming pickups and reshoots of earlier episodes.
...
Multiple sources cited ongoing friction between Starz and Fremantle, as well as efforts by author Gaiman to assert greater control over the drama, as the core sources of tension. Actors have been rewriting script pages, and Fremantle, which had hoped to trim the budget in the show's second season, is now spending frantically in order to simply finish the season. Due to all the issues that have bedeviled this saga of clashing deities, the second season of American Gods will not arrive until 2019 — two years after the first debuted to generally positive reviews.

The Wrap
Kristen Chenoweth has confirmed she will not return for the second season of “American Gods.”

The actress, who played Easter in the first season of Starz’s Neil Gaiman adaptation, revealed in an interview with TVLine on Monday that she would be departing the series out of solidarity with original showrunner Bryan Fuller.
...
Along with the showrunner shakeup, “American Gods” has seen casting changes going into its sophomore year, with Gillian Anderson replaced by Kahyun Kim, and the additions of Dean Winters and Devery Jacobs.

I guess I bought the original spin that they departed amicably. It seems if you come in $30 Million over budget on a $60 Million show, you're putting your job at risk. Also clashing with the source author is not great sign.

I enjoyed the book and generally enjoyed the show. I didn't think it was so good that I'd trust Fuller over Gaiman. I'll wait and see how the next season turns out.

As always, late to the show, but I'm just about to finish up and I'm pleased to read that others enjoyed it as much as I have. I'm a huge fan of the book and I was really nervous to see this adapted to TV but I think it's quite good. I think Ian McShane is fantastic and I just had my mind blown to learn that the actor playing Mad Sweeney is "Pornstache" from Orange is the New Black. I do hope they're able to keep up the quality for season 2, but with so many departures and switch-a-roos, I'm definitely concerned.

EW
In a searing video message shared on his Twitter account Saturday morning, Orlando Jones says he was fired from American Gods season 3 and alleges new showrunner Charles Eglee decided his character, Mr. Nancy, sends “the wrong message for black America.”
...
According to the actor, who played Mr. Nancy and offered significant writing and producing contributions to season 2 after the departure of original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, he was fired on Sep. 10, 2019.
...
Jones, in his video message, thanked Gaiman for creating the world of American Gods and for “opening the door” for him to become a writer-producer on season 2. He also thanked Fuller and Green for casting him in the role. “I hope the fans enjoyed it,” he says, “’cause really this is about you.”

Ugh, that's gross (if true). I just finished Season 2 (thanks free Starz weekend!) and thought it was really good (despite the last episode being a mess). Orlando Jones in particular was most excellent in S2.

I just binge watched* season two, and I was overall pretty happy with it. The story they told didn't really need Ostara (Chenowith's character), so there was no need to try to replace her with a less talented actress. While I missed Gillian Anderson, I think they handled her loss very well. By switching from "Media" to "New Media", they allowed a new actress to step in cleanly without having to try to imitate Anderson (although that would have been quite meta given how often Anderson was impersonating others) while also modernizing the story a bit. The final episode was a bit off the rails, but my hope is that next season (and imdb does show placeholders for a third season) will help to explain some of that. I have some theories, but I haven't looked at any recaps or other summaries yet so I don't know how they align with others.

It's quite disappointing to hear about Orlando Jones being out. He was over the top, but that's Mr. Nancy for you. He played such a big role in Season 2 that he'll be hard to either write out or replace, I think.

* My version of binge watching is 2-4 episodes per week

I forgot about this but I was pleasantly surprised by most of Season 2 considering how much of a mess the production was rumored to be. I agree that the last episode was a mess and officially have no interest in Season 3 at this point hearing how they treated Orlando Jones.

The article Isg linked to has a response from the producers saying that Jones wasn't renewed because season 3 doesn't have him in the story. That makes some sense if season 3 is going to focus on Shadow living on a frozen lake (I'm keeping it vague so as not to spoil things for non-book readers) as I suspect. Still, you'd think they'd want him back for the eventual conclusion, and this doesn't seem like the kind of departure you can come back from.

I'm guessing this also means an Anansi Boys spin off is right out.

I still prefer season 1. Season 2 felt confused much of the time.

To me, season 1 felt like the deconstruction of American mythology using foreign, mythological constructs as the tools of that endeavor. I liked watching how these foreign constructs struggling to fit in, or not in most cases.

Season 2 felt like a completely different show, with all the gods acquiescing to America without much thought or struggle. With the notable exception of the ever great Mad Sweeney.

I can see how that might make you enjoy Season 2 less, but I also think that's a natural function of the story. Season 1 was introducing us to the hidden world of the gods, and that gave them more room to explore their origins and how they fit into modern society. While Season 2 did some of that (I'm thinking of Mr. Ibis or Donar and Columbia), the focus shifted more to the preparations for the impending war between the Old Gods and the New Gods.

I saw that - it just doesn't strike me as the truth. Chalk it up as a messy divorce which probably has elements of all of it in there. The way they fired the original show runners and drove off Gillian Anderson make this a troubled production so I give Jones credit for that. :)
I'm guessing this also means an Anansi Boys spin off is right out.
They could do it via re-cast but I can't imagine they'll get there. I'd wager that the production hasn't been smooth enough to warrant green lighting the lesser known follow up.

I agree the tonal change was strong. An artifact of the production chaos imo.

Season 3 started Sunday. They're clearly going to the "frozen lake" I mentioned at the end of the last season, but there are also going to be some more significant deviations from the book. Given that Gaiman is involved, I'm not too worried about that. It's still fun seeing McShane chew the scenery as Wednesday.

While I enjoyed it, I also was thrown for a loop by the change in actors again. I get that these gods can be anyone they wish to be, but it does make for a period of adjustment as I get used to the new actors.

It's too early to tell if I'll still find the show as disorienting as season 2, but at least they're not bouncing around between 9 different gods with seeming abandon. It felt a bit more focused. However, it still doesn't feel like they're back on the same path as season 1. But I'll give it time. It's too early to make any calls on it.

And the actor who plays Technical Boy is still right behind Mad Sweeney as my favorite actor on the show. Of course, no one can top McShane. But that's just a given.

It has been cancelled:
The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network has canceled the troubled Neil Gaiman drama after three seasons. Sources say Starz is in talks with producers Fremantle for a potential event series or movie that would wrap up the story based on Gaiman's novel of the same name.

"American Gods will not return for a fourth season. Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country," Starz said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter late Monday.

I thought this last season was a huge improvement over the last, but still not nearly as good as the first. Still, I would have liked to see how the story wrapped up...or at least the conflict between the old and new gods. Hopefully they’ll get the movie or limited series I’ve read being discussed to do just that.

That really sucks. I liked the last season, too. Plus, they hinted at the book's great twist in the season finale. Hopefully someone will pick it up for a conclusion. In retrospect, they really should have focused more on the events in the book so they maybe could have completed the story in 3 seasons.
